But 9 games in and not a single assist.

Unfortunately it looks like all the concerns about his lack of hockey IQ have been answered. ;(
The only offence he’ll get playing on the 4th line is scoring himself. If I fault him for hockey IQ, it’s not that he has not had assists. It’s that he‘s already passed the puck way too much to Evans and Pitlick, despite the fact it’s a better gamble to go score himself.

My bad if the sarcasm wasn't clear. I don't actually have concerns for his hockey iq based on the little I've seen as a neutral fan.

As a Jagr fan though, he reminds me of him at times. His 3rd goal of the season looks like how Jagr shot sometimes. From his posture to the way he shot it.

Idk if it's just me who sees it though and my bias for big skilled players wanting to see that in him.

Dvorak has better hands but he’s too important to be moved away from 3rd C.

I think Evan's may be able to do the 3c job. Even if it weakens the 3rd line, at this point that's a fair tradeoff to strengthen the 2nd line...

He's already one of the team's best passers. He's made so many hard tape-to-tape passes. He's got great vision too.

You can only fault his IQ when he doesn't have the puck, as he's sometimes doesn't know where to go, but that'll be better with experience.

Yes, I picked up the sarcasm. But I reflected on the IQ question for giggles. I was thinking what did great passers do when they played with poor linemates. Gretzky would pass to Kuri but wouldn’t to Semenko even if he had a perfect passing possibility. On a rare 2 on 1 with Semenko, he always shot.

People are too hard on him. He's young, he is maturing and he's adapting to the nhl rink and speed.

Well I am watching Slaf for few years and I believe that this approach of limited NHL ice- time is absolutely OK for his development. They are just patient and do not give him too much responsibilities too soon. Every player is specific. You cannot apply CHL- AHL- NHL pattern to everyone.
Btw, for Mesar I truly believe it is the best way, but Slaf is different.
Mesar might be ready for the NHL as a 19 year-old. a year on North American ice where he lights it up red behind the opposing G might well be the recipe to building his confidence up while he gets acclimated to the ice on this side of the ocean.

Really hope we select dvorsky at the 2023 draft and go big with the kids on a 3rd line a year later, after snatching up Dubois and re-signing Monahan as well for the 2nd line:

Caufield - Suzuki - Dach
Monahan - Dubois - Anderson (Dubois and Anderson have prior chemistry)
Slafkovsky - Dvorsky - Mesar
Heineman - Beck - Roy

When Roy is ready, he can play on the 2nd line with Monahan and Dubois and Farrell should be ready to play on the 4th line.

Caufield - Suzuki - Dach
Monahan - Dubois - Roy
Slafkovsky - Dvorsky - Mesar
Farrell - Beck - Heineman

That third line, provided it is allowed to play offensive hockey, could be deadly and the difference come playoff time.

And Semenko was usefull just to make sure nobody hit Gretzky. Gretz wasn't that fast and was an easy target to check.

He's the real deal.
His skating has gotten way better over the last few games, and he's been reading the play a lot better in the offensive zone, making quite a few great passes and scoring a few goals at the same time with the limited minutes he's getting.

I would move Gallagher down on the third line with Monohan and try Slaf with Anderson and Dvorak. Dach is playing too good right now on the top line to be an option.
