Ray’s velocity here is way down. Not good.

Edit : and strikes out 2 of 3. Last 2 fastballs were up to 94 after being at 91-92 the whole inning.

Ray reminds me of Marco Estrada, sort of. Estrada re-signed with us after his great 2015 season for 2 years x 13M. This is his first real great season, not even close. Ray is probably having an even better season than Marco did in 2015 but you can't go crazy with him. 18 x 3, how about that? Happ money.
He'll get at least 20 x 5 on the open market.

It was Detroit that finished 1st in 1987, they started the season with a 35-5 record and even though the Blue Jays were slightly better than Detroit for most of the season they couldn't catch them. It's too bad that there weren't wildcards back then, the Bluejays would have made the playoffs almost every year from 1983 to 1993.
That was the 84 Tigers that went 35-5. 87 was the year we had the division lead going into the last week of the season and lost it on the last day to Detroit. That STILL hurts!

So all Vladdy needed to get over the slump is a good dose of Orioles.

Yep big bucks for him. Great time to have an excellent season. Probably 4/5 starts left?
Apparently hes now first of all time now in k/9 among pitchers with at least 1000 innings. His numbers across the board are elite. I think he ends up close to 200 innings by seasons end. The only thing going against him is age.

He's only 29. I'd argue it's the fact that even though he's not *that* old, he's got a lot more mileage on his arm than most pitchers his age.

I was going to say but decided against it, but if Thornton is your “ONLY” long guy, why are you using him in the 9th?

You may need that long guy tomorrow.

Bring Soria out again. Or Saucedo or Overton.

Not an egregious decision but still another questionable one by Montoyo. Like you can’t piss away games anymore.

Teams are starting to shy away from those ridiculous contracts on players approaching 30. The Pujols effect. That said, guys of his caliber rarely hit the market. His track record is what would concern me most if I were a GM. Paying for a career year is really risky.

Totally agree BUT some GM will pay. They can’t help themselves.

Sometimes you just have to hope it's not your GM rolling the dice

Ray has been amazing but I'd be extremely weary of him, working things out and having a career year in your late 20's isn't unheard of but there's plenty of risk involved if you are the one giving him term with a large AAV

His 2017 season was pretty comparable and he was essentially a Gray/Stroman level pitcher from 2015-2019. I think his contract's AAV will settle in between McCullers and Wheeler. I'm not sure if he'll get that 5th year though.
