Crazy how far this team is from the playoff picture with a pitching staff that has 2 guys who could get Cy Young votes(Ray and Manoah). I realise Alek wont have the IP but hes having an insane rookie campaign.
In 1987 the Blue Jays had the 2nd best record in all of mlb and the American league MVP in George Bell and they missed the playoffs.

Buck has never sounded more demoralized about the Jays, not even when they were fully rebuilding a few years ago. It’s like even he knows the team won’t get anywhere with Montoyo in charge.

I almost get the feeling he hates how baseball has changed. He doesn't seem motivated.

It’s possible. He sounds bored out of his mind calling these games. The pandemic might have something to do with it as well; baseball just probably isn’t very high on his priority list anymore.

Not surprised. Its always been a very tough division. 2 teams that buy titles and another that churns out more players than probably anyone else(TB). I realise the Ray's weren't around in the 80's but they're a threat every year. Even some of those Ricciardi teams were decent and couldn't even come close to sniffing the playoffs.

The f*** is that call? Was Vladdy not outside the chalk there? In other words, a missed foul ball catch? Should be a dead play.

Instead of 97, why not throw 87, for control purposes.

And then when he serves up 5 straight BP home runs

"You can't just toss whatever at the plate. It doesn't matter how well you control it, if it's soft and hittable it'll get crushed. That's the problem with these kids that come up on analytics thinking that spin rate and heat maps are the be-all, end-all. They don't understand that sometimes you just have to rear back and blow it past a hitter. Because if they can't catch up it won't matter where the pitch is thrown. George Brett used to talk about that all the time."

Uhh, Pat? Some of those pitches are rising. They're being thrown upward. Compare that to the mythical "rising" fastball that some baseball people swear is real but actually is an optical illusion.

The myth of the rising fastball was busted a long time ago. Its simple physics. The only time it's possible is with extreme sidearm/submariner tossers who actually throw on an upward plain. And theres what, maybe a dozen of those guys total in MLB?

Can't say I've ever seen a double play where the fielders are taking their time and still manage to throw out the runner at first with time to spare. Man, Kirk is slow.

Now, notice how I criticize his foot speed without childishly making fun of his weight?

Yeah, they studied it on Mythbusters once and I seem to remember the conclusion being that the ball would need to be thrown at close to 200mph to achieve enough RPMs for the backspin to actually generate lift. Like you said, a ball can only rise because it's thrown on an upward trajectory, never because it actively breaks in that direction.
