Even if he were the Flyers’ top choice, why would Hamilton choose Philly? If it’s money & term he wants, no one can top Seattle in both. If he likes where he is, he can stay in Carolina. If he wants a laid-back fanbase, he’s got plenty of better options. If he wants an immediate Cup contender, he has better options.

Seems like a fools errand for the Flyers to prioritize such a low-percentage play. Better to focus on more likely possibilities.
We do have some world class museums.

 Hes just so desperate

They're only interested in him as a rental though. If that’s the case they’re likely looking to buy low which probably won’t happen but I can see the logic in being interested in Jones if you can minimize the risk of assets/contract. Colorado has three defensemen in Makar, Toews, & Girard that are better than anything we have so they can also put Jones in that mid-pairing role in theory.

Like I’ve said I don’t think he’s necessarily bad. I just don’t think he’s a #1/top pair defender. So I have no interest in investing everything into him (assets, contract, playing time, etc.) to find out.

What cup contender would want him at a 7 year contract? It does not seem like Carolina is an option. I don’t see why Seattle would want to sign him. I have heard of the Avs, Flyers, and Chicago looking for and capable of fitting a dman. Jones will go to one. I’m sure there are others like the devils or something that come out of no where.

Exactly.

I could easily imagine a version of hell where Colorado gets him as a rental, they win a cup with him in a non-#1D role, he goes to UFA, the shills scream from the rooftops that the cup win is proof of his quality, and Chucky gives him some f***ing absurd Hayes-style contract (except way more $$$) next offseason.

Ryan Ellis just seems more like the vanilla fletcher move we will probably get.

I'd actually prefer Ellis over Jones and would expect the acquisition price to be cheaper.

Nashville is really in a position where it would be smart to sell. That window isn't open anymore. I really hope Fletcher hasn't just put the blinders on for Jones, and has at least pressured about the possibility of Josi.

Flyers and Minnesota don’t make good trade partners because we would be shopping the same issue. Defense. Myers would need to be part of the deal but then Minnesota needs to protect him. So would you trade a player like Konency for dumba? Because I sure as hell wouldn’t.
It would be three-way trade before the ED, or an agreement with Seattle.

But aside from all that, yes, I’d trade TK for Dumba. That seems like a legit “hockey trade.”

Ellis is much more appealing than Jones
Ellis is about the same age as Kimo was when the Flyers obtained him. His experience is much more valuable to this defense than Jones’ youth is. If healthy, Ellis could really settle down the back end.
Provorov-Ellis; Sanheim-York; Zamula-Ghost/Hagg; Morin, Hogberg. I can live with that. Myers gone to Nashville in the trade.

How?

Ellis still has 6 years left at $6.25M cap hit per.

Ellis will be 31 in January. And has been highly injury prone.

Jones will be 27 in October & is the better, less-injury prone player.

To me it’s no comparison. Why saddle yourself with six years of the breaking-down cheaper option instead of going an extra year & a little more cost for the better, prime option?

Yea for sure. Cheaper acquisition. Cheaper contract. His possession stats I believe are good. The Flyers and Preds scouted each other a lot before the preds turned it around for no reason. There were a lot of rumors that “a lot of ground work was put into place” for a post ED trade. I am sure that’s still up there.

How much does he have left in the tank though? Lots of injuries over the course of his career.

The underrated benefit of all of these big name players not wanting to sign here is it really opens up the eyes of management as to how far this franchise has really fallen. Hard to push the narrative that you are a world class org when the big fish snub you at ever turn, and then maybe they will try and actually address the underlying problem.

But knowing our luck the Flyers will over compensate and give Jones a f***ing Ludacris contract on top of paying premium assests for the right to do so.

In the world of hypothetical trades that involve actual out of the box, non Fletcher thinking.

The Flyers could have made a move to acquire a Arvidsson for a reasonable price, helping to mitigate the skill set lost in a Ellis/Konecny package.

Ellis is better. Going to be cheaper after that next Jones contract, and will likely be much cheaper to acquire.

Id prefer Ellis too because hed cost less and his contract is manegeble. His age concerns me, but hed improve this team in their current window.

I dont think we get Jones tbh. It seems like Jones is set on testing free agency and I think Fletcher will pursue a longer term option. Hes probably had preliminary talks with Nashville and can resume them after the entry draft.

They can’t buy a team anymore with a salary cap. Back then they could build a high floor team at worst which always gave them a realistic shot at being a contender.

Now a days there’s more open competition on the free agent market & no team can really come in with an offer considerably bigger than the field. So really that thing that generally swings these things is the player’s confidence in a team to have a realistic shot at competing for a cup. The Flyers haven’t realistically been able to offer that in the last decade or so.

So you get the Kevin Hayes’ of the world & overpay for them when you’re in a position the Flyers are/have been in.

It feels like some times the organization as well as some fans have a mentality from back then still like the Flyers brand really means shit in 2021. Guys want to play for winners.

Ellis has 6 left at I think just under 7 million per.

I’d take that, with a cheaper cost to acquire the player than bending over for whatever Jones will demand.

It’s up in the air because nobody knows what Nashville will do, but if I they do indeed go to sell as it seemed they were primed to do at a point last season - their big 3 dmen are my primary targets this off-season.

f*** Jones, Dumba, Risto, and whatever contract Hamilton will want.

Poile has a chance to take a step back and realize where his club is at. Forsberg is a UFA next season along with Ekholm. They would be wise to admit they had some fun years but it’s time to not waddle in mediocrity.

That’s highly debatable; most would say Jones is better. And it doesn’t even factor Ellis’ array of injuries & shortened seasons, or the 4-year age difference.

Who will be better over the next 6 seasons? The obvious bet is Jones. By a lot.

Ellis is a half-measure.

and then he re-ups to stay in Colorado and says I never did want to go anywhere else.

I was considering the same thing, similar to Hakstol’s implicit endorsement from analytic-heavy Toronto and Seattle
