For all the talk of the Flyers being in on a lot of things, we've only really gotten credible reports about Seth Jones. Wonder who we turn our attention to if Seth Jones can't work out

I'm sure we will be in on Jones until the bitter end. Then when it doesn't work out all the other options will have been taken by other teams while we wasted time.

Still blows my mind that GM’s in the NHL pay a premium for a player they acquire and then sign to an extension. There literally is no reason to pay extra to that team for that opportunity.
You pay extra for the cooperation of the seller to give you flexibility to negotiate an extension with the player before making the trade. It's worth it if you want the player long term. Remember we had a 48 hr window to sign Kimmo as part of that deal with Nashville?

Supposedly their list went 1)Jones 2)Ellis and 3) Hamilton.

I’m hoping with the trade yesterday by the Preds they are doing 4+4 but there is speculation they want to protect Kunin

Maybe I am oversimplifying things here, but it seems that the Flyers should be able to say "We'll negotiate a trade for Jones as long as we can discuss extensions with him while we negotiate." Flyers win by locking up there guy, Columbus wins by receiving more for an extended Jones than as a rental. If we can't even discuss contracts with him, trades talks should end there.

... while (in theory) Fletcher can ensure a reasonable (I know, I know) contract extension or walk away.

Does that have to happen before the entry draft and therefore doesn’t work?
Probably would be either before the Expansion Draft or a deal with Seattle if they take Dumba. Hard to see Minnesota letting it reach that point, though.

Then they have to go 4-4 protection.

Signing Hamilton who is the best player and costs no assets. Costs no expansion draft causality. Seems like the winner to me.

He has to want to come here. He will get basically the same money from any potential team - so he gets to pick his favourite.

I honestly do not believe he would pick Philly.

Even if he were the Flyers’ top choice, why would Hamilton choose Philly? If it’s money & term he wants, no one can top Seattle in both. If he likes where he is, he can stay in Carolina. If he wants a laid-back fanbase, he’s got plenty of better options. If he wants an immediate Cup contender, he has better options.

Seems like a fools errand for the Flyers to prioritize such a low-percentage play. Better to focus on more likely possibilities.

Flyers and Minnesota don’t make good trade partners because we would be shopping the same issue. Defense. Myers would need to be part of the deal but then Minnesota needs to protect him. So would you trade a player like Konency for dumba? Because I sure as hell wouldn’t.
