The underrated benefit of all of these big name players not wanting to sign here is it really opens up the eyes of management as to how far this franchise has really fallen. Hard to push the narrative that you are a world class org when the big fish snub you at ever turn, and then maybe they will try and actually address the underlying problem.

So you're mad big names supposedly won't sign here, and also mad that Jones may well sign here.

First of all, Jones is a big name who is not worth the asking price. Second, I'm glad big names won't sign here, because maybe it will force the teams higher ups to re-evaluate their process of running this organization.

But knowing our luck the Flyers will over compensate and give Jones a f***ing Ludacris contract on top of paying premium assests for the right to do so.

The underlying problem is the Clarke Country Club and that's not getting fixed until all of them die off.

the way you fans treat this organization that actually tries to fix this team, you dont deserve squat.

Yeah, it might be asking for too much for the country club atmosphere to ever change.

They already seem hellbent on elevating Lappy to some kind of higher role. I don't know if the Phantoms job is for him to get coaching experience to become HC, or a form of scouting experience as he assesses players. If he busts as a HC they'll find some other management role for him. He's eventually going to stumble into an AGM or GM position someday by virtue of existing.

How?

Ellis still has 6 years left at $6.25M cap hit per.

Ellis will be 31 in January. And has been highly injury prone.

Jones will be 27 in October & is the better, less-injury prone player.

To me it’s no comparison. Why saddle yourself with six years of the breaking-down cheaper option instead of going an extra year & a little more cost for the better, prime option?
I'd rather not have either, but Ellis would be cheaper to acquire and will certainly cost less versus the cap, assuming Jones would even sign with the Flyers.

Jones is not worth what he is going to be paid. It's really that simple. Factor in having to trade a ransom of players to even acquire him, it's pretty easy to see why some people don't want him in Philly.

I was considering the same thing, similar to Hakstol’s implicit endorsement from analytic-heavy Toronto and Seattle

Colorado is on a different plane of existence when it comes to possession hockey. They also have Makar, Girard, Toews already. So, it's absolutely plausible that they specifically identify areas in Jones' game that can be maximized in their systems, with those partners. I don't think anyone is taking the stance that Jones can't provide some value. Especially with MacKinnon's 2 years left on his contract, that team is full steam ahead win now. They were specifically identified as the one team that doesn't care about an extension -- they just want Jones' cheap contract for next season. Way different gamble in a way different environment.

As for Hakstol, I'll call bull. Nothing he has done at any place can be spun as "pro-analytics." Not in process, not in result. Even in Toronto, his PK was their single worst area. We don't need to treat organizations as monolithic entities. A team can be invested in statistics and their coach can want a particular assistant. And evaluating players and coaches is quite the difference.

Seattle might be heavy into stats, but Ron Francis doesn't strike me as a brilliant GM -- he's quite boring actually. If anything, as Carolina has thrived without him, he might just be riding their philosophical coattails. This is hockey we're dealing with -- with plenty of HockeyGuy™ even running the better teams -- and even the most savvy teams still do questionable things. No one is smarter than Carolina, and you have them trading a 1st for Skjei long-term.

Theres no way you can straight faced tell me that orgs that "invest in analytics" dont use them to guide every waking decision, and subject everyone to their analysis like some sort of a cult. Analytics are the devil, and anyone who associates with them recognizes and accepts that, willfully giving all of themselves unto the analytics.

If we're trading for Ellis, Voracek is the obvious player going back, Nashville takes on $2M for three years in return for escaping the 3 out years on the Ellis contract - they get an offensive forward for an anemic offense, we get an offensive defenseman (one of the top scorers on D the last few years) who can stabilize our kiddie corp.

Analytics stole my wife. It’s the only thing Pierre Maguire and I have in common.
