For the rumoured Point extension, doesn't the average AAV have to be at least what he is making in the final year of the current deal?

No, the two sides can agree to whatever they want.

Now if the team doesn't sign Point early, and if they want to retain his RFA rights for negotiating purposes next offseason, then they'll need to make him a qualifying offer by the QO deadline. And for Point, that's a one-year deal at least equal to the $9m he'll be making this year in the final year of his current deal.

But even then, there's no minimum on what they actually sign him for (other than the league minimum). Of course there's not much chance he'd agree to anything less than the QO amount -- he negotiated that $9m for a reason -- but you never know.

This isn't a legit source. That's pathetic for Buffalo. Smith is a UFA in a year so of no real long-term use, maybe he can be flipped for a 2nd + if they retain. Krebs is alright but is a pretty underwhelming main piece. Hague is a good young D but Buffalo already has Dahlin and now Power on the left. The 1st would be late. Ristolainen got almost that much.
What do you mean? Kennedy is more of a prospect guy but him and THN are a credible source.

They may be credible but that offer is trash. Would be beaten by several other teams. Unless the injury he has is that bad where teams don't think he'll be the player he was before Buffalo can get more. If they like Krebs that's fine but the next piece needs to be Tuch, not Smith. If you think Hague can play the right keep him in, the 1st stays but I would want another 1st.

Yeah, but "potential" doesn't mean much when it's Jack Eichel on the other side. He would turn them into favorites, IMO.

It reeks of impatience. They would blow through 3 centers who would've been cost controlled for like 5 years or longer. Winning the Cup is hard, it's no guarantee even with Eichel and now they'll have limited said title window. We don't go back to back without some kids named Point, Gourde and Cirelli in the system to fall back on in 2016. Imagine if we traded them for some big name and we still didn't win. It would be over.

This wouldn't be such a big deal if VGK didn't already have a massive title window. But instead of winning with what they have (and they could have already) while their youth developed as an internal solution, they'd be hosting "last dance" in 3 years with an Eichel trade if they still don't win and won't have anyone to fall back on

Get home to see we finally got the TJ deal done, and now we get to put another player on LTIR, awesome. Makes it even better, I hope the hate towards us flows even stronger than last season.

So we have roughly 6M in cap space.

Other than resigning the kids, what kind of damage can we do with that? Players to keep an eye on?

Definitely getting a backup goalie. I would keep my eye out on a veteran forward as well. I think we leave some space just in case Foote isn't ready for playoff hockey and we need to make another Savard-like trade.
