For the rumoured Point extension, doesn't the average AAV have to be at least what he is making in the final year of the current deal?
No, the two sides can agree to whatever they want.
Now if the team doesn't sign Point early, and if they want to retain his RFA rights for negotiating purposes next offseason, then they'll need to make him a qualifying offer by the QO deadline. And for Point, that's a one-year deal at least equal to the $9m he'll be making this year in the final year of his current deal.
But even then, there's no minimum on what they actually sign him for (other than the league minimum). Of course there's not much chance he'd agree to anything less than the QO amount -- he negotiated that $9m for a reason -- but you never know.
