The counter argument to that is that Nichuskin is shooting a lot more this season than previous years (and has improved each year in Colorado), so even if the shot% is a bit inflated he'd still be producing at a good rate even if his shot% normalized. His shots/60 rate at 5v5 is 2nd only to Mackinnon among Avs forwards this year.

What surprises me the most about this.
MacDermid is almost shooting as much as Landeskog.
Also Tyson Jost, LOC and NAK are all shooting more than Mikko or Landy.

Can’t say it enough, pay the man. Even if this year ends up being his best year points-wise, he still brings so much to this team that can’t be easily replaced.
I'm not saying don't bring him back. This team needs him. But he is best utilized on the 3rd line. Or Nuke needs another season producing like this for me to change my tune on the matter.

EJ should have been bought out ages ago. What an awful contract.

I get why Sakic kept him. He’s a key cog in the room, & helped reshape the franchise into a Cup contender. That said, I’ve never understood why until recently (IE: McDavid, Draisaitl, Rants, Makar) players couldn’t cash in for a significant payday until UFA, when in most cases their primes are winding down, or over (22-30 should seemingly be their long term big $ years). Meanwhile, given EJ’s injury history I think everyone expected his deal to be an albatross.

Giroux (50%) for 1st + Helleson
Nick Paul for Compher

Comes in just over the cap with Byram on the roster but that could probably be navigated without needing to pay anything extra for double retention on Giroux.

That 4th line would be a lot tougher to play against, and Paul would solve the 4th line/PK face-off issue.

Glad someone else brought up Nick Paul. He checks a lot of boxes. Brings size the Avs need, can skate well so he can fit in Bednar's system well, has been above average on face-offs in the past (this year he's a little below average), can play C or W, plays on the top PK unit in Ottawa.

I think he's got some untapped skill and an underrated shot too, that a team like the Avs could help take his game to another level. They tend to get the most out of guys like that.

Plus he shouldn't cost too much in trade and has a relatively cheap contract at $1.35M. Would be a real nice addition to that 4th line that could move up to the 3rd if needed.

Also, I'm not a huge analytics guy, but I remember seeing his name among some of the better defensive forwards in the league on this list last year. If he's got good zone entry/exit stats too he's probably a lock as an Av trade target.

According to Seravalli's summary of the Atlantic Division this week Dorion offered Paul a 3 year $6m contract ($2m aav) which got rejected. Might take something closer to $3m to extend him, especially if he hits UFA.

Also, interesting seeing Nash at the top of that list. He was on waivers not so long ago and got claimed by Arizona. If Jost gets moved and we need a very cheap RHS 4C who can win draws and kill penalties (albeit not much else) he might be functional enough as an option.

Seeing Appleton that high....... $900k caphit, RFA this offseason, 6'2'', can PK, and can play wing or center (bad at draws though). A couple of months ago Friedman also specifically said he could be one to keep an eye on.

Any news on Giroux? After his Flyers got smoked by Detroit?
Lebrun, who’s very close with Brisson said yesterday that Giroux and Brisson only began some initial talks about his plans over the break. He said those real talks are still yet to come. So I wouldn’t expect anything in February.

Most contenders won't be able to fit his caphit in until closer to the deadline either.

Appleton was my pick for the “Bill Karlsson expansion breakout award” but he simply hasn’t been as good this year. I’m pretty convinced at this point he is a Jost or JTC class player, capable of some nice defenders metrics or rare offensive streaks when given a bunch of ice time you probably shouldn’t be giving him but overall just a guy you’ll eventually want to upgrade his spot.

He could still prove me wrong but at 26 and on a team dying for somebody to step up - I doubt it.

Edit: He is bigger and cheaper though so if we can dump JTC or Jost off somewhere and want to backfill with an Appleton in a minor deal I’d be fine with that. But if a dude like Appleton is Sakic’s big splash this place is gonna have a meltdown :D

I still think the Avs are waiting for find out what's going to happen with Byram. If Byram isn't coming back this season f*** Giroux, we need a defenseman... You can not go into the postseason with any of JJ, EJ, or Murray in your top four and expect to compete for a cup.

The trade deadline really hinges on Byram's availability. If he's able to play, I think the Avs are active in the forward market, and add a depth D. If he's not, the need for another top-4 D goes way up. Tough position to be in right now, hopefully Byram feels better before the TDL.

Bednar and Sleepy Joe are just befuddled right now.
