Was a nice interview, Blake was pretty transparent, nothing hardcore fans don't necessarily already know, but still a good pod.

I did like what they said re: Grans towards the end, with how his development was mapped out down to even having a few days off to work with the skills coaches since he missed camp, but a lot of their plans went out the window with the staffing situations--but it was a nice window into how things are individualized.

Wait......so they DO have a development plan?? f*** me sideways, I'm shocked....SHOCKED I tell you.....

All kidding aside, definitely a good listen.

What has Frk done to play top line? People shit on Brown (and I agree he has played his way off of that line) but he has done a hell of a lot more than Frk. I am glad Frk is getting a shot, but I don't see the fit there. Would have rather Lemieux.

He's put up gaudy stats in the minors over a dozen game stretch at age 27 so he's clearly ready for the NHL all-star game. Don't you understand the natural progression of players?

It was a good listen and agreed. Interesting part for me was Kempe discussion. How long it took for him to find his place and his progression up the ranks. Kings are definitely not going to be rushing players.

lemiux line already is clicking, you can put him on the 2nd to 3rd line to die offensively or give him the best opportunity to succeed by putting him with kopi.

Listening the Blake kings of the pod, he just said "I don't understand why some players shots go in and some don't" are you kidding me?

Kaliyev then has earned more IMO
Kaliyev averages about 2 shots a game this season. Frk averages about double that in his NHL career while averaging 2 minutes less playing time per game. Plus, the Kaliyev, Lemieux, Lizzotte line is playing well. No need to break it up.

I'm not going to go digging up Frk's stats, but if he averages nearly four shots a game in his 118 game NHL career and has just 18 goals, that's a shooting percentage of roughly four per cent. He can stay the hell away from the top line if that's accurate.

I messed up. Not sure what I was looking at. He has 11.7 shooting percentage. 154 shots over 118 games. This is why I should only post during lunch or after work.

their takes on the kings are pretty spot on. would of liked if blake had spoke on vilardi and tkachev

He did mention Vilardi a little but nothing groundbreaking, just that since they COULD use the waiver rules so he could continue to build, they would.

@LAKings88 mentioned their discussions on Kempe and that seems to be the development model so expect LOTS of slow cooking. I'm okay with that now that it's verbalized.

I have watched Frk a lot in AHL this year and I am not crazy about his hockey IQ...

He's kind of bricks for brains but having some guys with a one track mind is good. They can't all be overthinkers.

Don't get me wrong I think in the end he's a tweener but at age 28 with ever increasing production and like 15 guys sick/dead at least there's a guy with SOME experience getting in the lineup.

I think someone else mentioned at one point we went from being pretty spoiled with the transparency of DL. Remember, Blake's words over the summer are kind of at odds with this development plan, but it makes more sense in that it seems as if they don't really think about giving people like you and I the details, rather just the general big picture (this year we're making the playoffs and going to start integrating youth). Just a different MO, which is fine and becoming more and more apparent.

I still have some qualms with how some things are handled but now that we've had some shifting over the last month (and on ice improvement towards a real identity, mind you) the puzzle pieces make a lot more sense than they did.

All this tells us is that you don't understand how to interpret shooting % stats in hockey.

That being said, his career S% in the NHL is 11.7%.

I play hockey on three teams. One of my teammates and I were having that exact same conversation about another one of our teammates. It just seems that he can score from wherever even when the shots don’t look dangerous. We don’t know how to explain it as a lot of his goals should be saved. It is the weirdest thing

I think the same for my beer league team. Just should be different in the NHL where they have sport scientists breaking everything down.

Blake seems like a really nice guy and very player friendly. The development plan will work out better in the end for some players. As you see guys like Dach and Cozens top out, some of these guys that had a chance to marinate with no pressure may reach another gear they didnt have before.
But some things like Kempe finally breaking out are not the true story necessarily. Hes played with guys like Lizotte, Amadio and Wagner in the bottom six every year and is finally being played with a top player. Sometimes if a guy just gets a chance to be successful right away he could run with the opportunity.

Playing with better linemates obviously helps but the big thing, for me, is not trying to force him in at the center position.

Helps when the opposing goalies are old, fat, and/or drunk. ;)

Does accuracy trump velocity?

It's weird that I don't hear this talked about much anymore, but a lot of it is in the release

Any high level goalie can stop most anyone's shot if they're set and can read it

Guys like Kaliyev have a unique blend of sheer shot power, crazy release points, and the ability to just get the puck on net from any weight distribution/angle whatever. Same with Frk to a degree. I don't think his release is as deceptive, but the sheer shot power and quick release/one timing everythign makes a goalie really uncomfortable to the point where at worse there's a rebound.

Part of the problem with our PP is the amount of time it gives goalies to get set and in position, that means even good shots have controllable rebounds, Frk injects some chaos.

But yeah re: release, go back and watch that Kaliyev wrister on...the Stars Oettinger I think? Ther'es no way anyone on earth but Kaliyev knows where that one is going. Lots of guys tip their shots by locking eyes on their target or curling over their blade but Arty's is basically open the whole time and comes off in different places
