He's a tiny center from Sweden... on the Berggren highlights Wings fans have been fondling themselves over, he's the guy either starting or finishing the play. He's a real solid SHL player... not sure he has the frame to make it in the NHL. He has to be ~5'7" 160lbs.

The next Pius Suter! Except smaller.

On the Leafs, here's what suggest for this offseason:

Trade Kerfott and Reilly before the expansion draft. Obviously, returns will be limited, but you're looking for NHL-ready forwards and reasonable deals.

Try to re-sign Hyman if he's willing to take a reasonable deal. If he wants to go to market, he'll get an overpay somewhere so you lose him.

Re-sign Spezza and Bogosian if they're willing to stay at reasonable prices.

Consider re-signing Galch and Simmonds if they're willing to take league min(ish) salaries.

Let the other UFAs walk.

The goals of the offseason:
  • Acquire at least 1 solid defenseman. This could range anywhere from a top pair guy to a bottom 4 guy, but whoever it is needs to be able to play in the top 4 if needed. Sandin tentatively takes Reilly's spot, but you don't want to be relying on Sandin, plus you need depth in case of injury.
  • Acquire a 1B goalie to compete with Campbell. Seattle might be able to supply that.
  • Acquire enough forwards with enough offensive talent to keep the likes of Simmonds, Engvall, Mikheyev, Spezza and Galch on the 4th line or lower if everyone is healthy.
  • The above means, adding 4-5 new forwards to the roster. Some of that might come internally with guys like Nick Robertson or other prospects, but it likely means dipping into the trade (Reilly) or free agent market. it's worth noting that if they do trade Reilly, they'll be to protect 7-3, which would leave them with plenty of forward protection slots, and can take advantage of teams not wanting to lose a good forward for nothing.
Obviously cap space is going to be an issue, and it would be easier if they moved Marner, but according to both Dubas and Shanahan, that ain't happening. By my calculations, if they made these moves, they'd have around 19m to play with. This doesn't count Hyman's cap hit, and assumes someone like Engvall is buried in the minors. Assuming each of the new players (1-2 D, 1 G, 4 F) come in at an average of 3M, they can afford it.

Wonder if we see Graves for Nolan Patrick in the off season…

I doubt we trade Graves for anyone we'd need to protect. Unless you're talking after the expansion draft, at which point I doubt we have a Graves to trade.

That would be a risky trade.
Not risky at all. Starting next season Ryan Graves is going to be a 3rd pairing defensemen on this team.

Nolan Patrick, for all I've complained about him, can still potentially become a solid 3C and if he really performs he can become a 2C long term. Even if the trade ended up with Patrick busting, are we really missing out losing Graves and his contract on the 3rd pair?

Worst case scenario, we have an extra 3 mill in cap room. Byram can easily fill Graves spot next year.

If he develops into a solid 2c does that mean we won the 2017 draft twice :sarcasm:

I'm not the biggest Patrick fan, but if he just cost Graves, Avs should immediately do that deal. Graves is, at most, one season away from being a 3m bottom pairing guy.
I don't think Philadelphia have interest in LHD's as they already have too many of them and have York on the way too.

Friedman believes that Eichel will get traded sooner rather than later because Buffalo no longer wants to deal with all the BS surrounding the injury. They basically want to transfer those problems to another team.

Flyer need a RHD and doubt they have interest in Graves.

Personally, would definitely do the trade for Patrick even before the expansion draft and even risk exposing. Not sure if the altitude might cause more problems with Migraines. Might be better suited to playing somewhere warm near the ocean on the west coast.

I think they have to move Nylander or Marner plus what you're saying. I was reading their forum today and a lot of their fans think they need to make a Marner trade on some 1 for 1 hockey trade. Most can't see that maybe him for 2 pretty dang solid players may serve them better. Nylander is a potential sell high candidate, but he seems like a perimeter player.
Matthews would be the last guy I'd trade, but he needs some different type of player on his wings.
They just seem slow. I don't know what it is. They've got lots of talent, but it is disjointed or something. Dubas caved, now he's hosed. Both Nylander and Marner showed him who is boss. Then he pissed away a 1st on Foligno.
Which, I believe some on here were hoping Sakic would do. Could Foligno have done something here? Maybe he's cooked.

Both them and Edmonton are in a place where a few key moves could really propel them but they likely need to get rid of a sexy piece to remedy their D and depth.

Byram can certainly fill Graves' lineup spot, but he can't fill his role (yet anyway from what I've seen). If this team loses Graves, they'll need someone else who plays a similar style of game. They went out and acquired Nemeth because they basically wanted even more of Graves. I can't imagine them suddenly being okay with have none of that.

If I were GM and had full control, I'd explore trading Marner. Nylander actually showed up in the playoffs. I'd keep him on that sweet deal. But the discussion is moot. Both Shanahan and Dubas were very clear that they have no intention of trading any of the big four. Any plan that doesn't take that into account is pure fantasy.

As for Foligno, he was injured, so we can't say whether he's cooked or not. A healthy Foligno would be great on the Avs, but likely in a 4th line role. Not someone I would have paid a 1st for. Also, I heard he may have already been dealing with an injury before the trade. If that's the case, a 1st is a huge overpayment.

On Edmonton, I don't actually think they need to lose a sexy piece. They seems to need a massive overhaul like I'm suggesting for the Leafs. Almost all their depth guys need to be replaced. What they need to move is the bloated contracts of guys like Neal and Koskinen.

So you need a number 5 psysical Dman with extra cap space, with salaries and term being depressed for bottom feeders in the free agent market and the Avalanche having the allure of winning a cup to get a player to take less?

Which TDL acquisition do we think would have made a reasonable difference if Sakic had utilized the cap space?
Bearing the cost in mind for those who did change teams...
Laughton
Glendening
Tierney
Foligno
Savard
Woods
Palmieri
Zajac

Tierney and Zajac are the only two really. Would’ve really helped shore up the C depth.
