I don't disagree but Marc-Andre Fleury better be coming with Shea Theodore, not just a smaller plus.

For all his struggles in the playoffs, Mitch Marner is still a point-per-game two way winger. Those are incredibly rare.

Yeah, they're stuck with Marner, but really there are worse franchise cornerstones to have. Dude has no excuses as to his postseason performances but...I just don't think you take that guy out of the lineup and somehow get better. You'd just be scrambling to replace the talent you lost in any given deal, and that's not going to solve the issue at hand.

The guy the Leafs need to be a little careful with is Zach Hyman. Tremendous defensive forward, and watching that series against the Habs, he got a TON of good looks and breakaway chances...but he couldn't put any of them away. Really hard worker and good player but he's also 29. You got maybe one, two more years before his game starts to fade. I think they need to find a complementary talent for that spot who provides more offensive punch.

I don't think Dubas will think twice - he's letting Hyman walk. Some dumb team is going to overpay that guy for sure.

I don't know if this has been discussed yet, but this offseason we can start talking about an extension with Nuke.

What's the max we could realistically give him, and fair for both sides? On one hand his production isn't great, but on the other hand he's a Corsi god.

Losing Kerfoot’s overpay in the expansion draft will help too. The whole “vet character guy” movement this year was also just as much as getting cheap players for the roster.

If Hyman could be had here for 3-4 years at a decent rate, I'd absolutely love him for the 2nd line. The decent rate is the hard part.

It's a good question. He's an elite defensive player who was on pace for 34 and 31 points the last two seasons (respectively).

Even in a flat cap world, I bet he's looking for something similar to the Compher/Donskoi deals. Basically 4 years in the neighborhood of $3.5M.

I am not sure if he gets in in Colorado. As I recall, there was some chatter that last summer's negotiations weren't very smooth.

the problem with the leafs is their defence. You add a 1D or a couple second pairing guys in and they are legit will not matter which pieces you move in and out at forward as long as you keep the main core of matthews marner nylander

I mean they scored a full GPG lower than what they did in the RS. The defense could use some work but their big guys also didn’t show up. I mean Matthews had 1 goal in the series and Marner hasn’t scored a goal in his last 18 playoff games. It doesn’t matter how well constructed their team is, if those guys aren’t producing they won’t win anything.

Yeah I think there's gonna be some team that just can't help themselves and gives him a long term, big money deal.

Honestly, one team that'd benefit from a guy like that would be Edmonton. Put him with McDavid and/or Draisaitl and he'd be just about the perfect complementary player. McDavid has never really had a Landeskog-type player, Hyman's about the closest there is available this summer.

For all the grief I give MM, the TML management would be dumb to sell him short. Be like Sakic. Dump the useless vets. Hold onto MM like Duchene.

Thing is the Oilers don't need anyone to play with 97 or 29. They can hold their own despite Tippett's playing them together in the playoffs. 97 especially can be saddled with Kassian/Archibald/Puljujarvi and make that line go.

What they need is to completely revamp the bottom six and add something to help those two.

Don’t forget about getting 3/4 more defenseman that aren’t useless and a starting goalie.

I think it's a need, but not the biggest one. They keep putting one-dimensional slugs like Kassian with McDavid and/or Draisaitl and they'd get a lot more out of them if they went out and got a competent defensive forward who could keep up with them. Pittsburgh figured out pretty quick that putting decent, if unspectacular two-way forwards on Crosby's wings, it works out perfectly. Get some guys who play good defense and are effective without the puck, since, y'know, they won't have it very often.

Yes, they need to revamp the bottom six, but a guy like Hyman offers up an intriguing option. You can play him with the Big Two, but you don't have to, he's a good third line guy as well.

The guy who would absolutely tip the scales for Edmonton, however, is Danault. All they'd have to do is offer the money they're paying Nugent-Hopkins to Danault and...holy shit, they'd have as close to complete a team as they'd ever have with Connor in the fold.

Edmonton signing Danault and a legit starting goalie would transform them into a serious threat.

No real new info on Grubauer's contract other than the fact that they're waiting until after the playoffs to negotiate. Maybe he's just stating the obvious but LeBrun does say Grubauer might have to take less than what's on the market in order to stay with the Avs.

I doubt Grubauer would go shorter-term but that four-year Matt Murray contract, maybe at a slightly higher AAV, wouldn't be bad if they can make it work. Those six-year deals for goalies are just too much.
