The Jets (and Gase really) played not to lose that game. Cowardly play calling.

It's been what, a full decade of this? Since the 08-09 Rex teams that were good offensively and got after it. Since then, it's a been a full decade of the same shit. Playing not to lose. Dink and dunk. Run into the pile. Play the field position game.

Winning is great and all, but I watch sports to be entertained. The league has moved to an obliviously offensive focus with high scoring games. And we gotta watch this f***ing trash like it's a team full of dudes with leather helmets. Take a risk. Get burned with the game wide open, I don't care. Go for it.

Losing that way annoyed me, but what is more enraging is knowing we haven't changed. It's the same strategy. Playing not to lose.

I was trying to recall how many times Darnold tried to "air it out" -- I can only think of two times...last season he'd air it at least once a game. Hard to fathom since we're supposed to have more speed this season than last.

On 3rd and 1 on the final drive. Which was the one time not to do it.

How do we know Gase called it not to lose? What if the players just sucked and didn't execute? Darnold went deep three times in that game to a WIDE OPEN Anderson and he missed all three. At least on the first one I could say Anderson should've come back a half step and jumped for it but every ball was still underthrown or overthrown. He didn't scramble, he didn't catch the Bills offguard with a hot route or audible.

I constantly saw windows to open guys in the middle of the field and he had his eyes locked on to something else or held the ball for no apparent reason. Then i'd see the replay and it'd confirm what I thought.
I truly think this one is on the players, not the coaching. Like 90/10. Gase can't throw, kick or block. that's just basic stuff these guys couldn't do.

All that said, Mahomes didn't have to switch offenses after year 1. The Oline for us has been garbage both years we had Darnold (and they had zero chemistry which is understandable yesterday). We have A+ RB pass catching and A+ slot catching but flat out D+ outside WR talent and C TE talent right now.

I'm not giving up on Darnold at all but holy shit he needs to step up massively next week.

Jets have gone through so many QBs not named Testaverde I don't know how to feel about Darnold.

Because this isn't backyard football. If you see guys deep and the QB is constantly looking under all game, it's the gameplan. If he's not scrambling and throwing quickly, it's the gameplan. Gase isn't giving 2nd year Darnold the freedom to improv the game - it's a set strategy and gameplan. They were calling quick, short passes and asking Darnold to get rid of it quickly. Now some of that was bc the OL sucks and the Bills could get pressure whenever, so some credit to the Bills.

But overall, the gameplan was very clearly conservative. When they got up in the game, it got even more conservative. This is playing not to lose.

Your backyard football comment was stupid. No one implied it was backyard football.
We are both using circumstantial observations but you're ignoring the multitude of other possible explanations. It easily could be a combination of darnold being scared to throw, the wr not getting open and the lack of blocking making it so plays couldn't develop deeper downfield.

Just bc darnold checked down doesn't mean the primary or even secondary target was the check down. I'm not dismissing the possibility that this is truly all the gameplan but it's just wrong to assert it was undoubtedly the gameplan and not more bc of the players.

We've seen this now with how many young qb's and/or bad olines?

Not to mention this gameplan got Anderson wide open three times for 30+ yard td throws. Darnold missed them. That's assuming there weren't more wide open opportunities that he failed to see. As I said, I saw quite a few in the middle of the field

Second year qb's can improviseor audible...like really any qb worth half a shit. good qb's are given trust enough to make plays on occasion.

Nothing like "over reaction Monday" the first week of the new NFL season.

-1st year coaches should be fired after week 1
-Promising QB's are all of a sudden busts
-Teams that lose week 1 are garbage and headed for a 3-13 record.

This happens all the time and it's actually kind of humorous.

As bad as Sam was yesterday and he was pretty damn bad, the O-line was worse and might be worse than anyone anticipated. Yes Douglass brought in Kalil back from retirement as an attempt to fix the hole at center but he doesn't look ready yet. He was getting run over all day long. Winters and Shell were abominable. The only guy on the line who was halfway decent was Osemele and even he got beat a time or two.

Listen I know it's not sexy to talk O-Lines but guess what..it's the most important group on the team as it's the teams foundation. And right now the Jets have a shitty one and it's going to be make Darnold's development a heck of alot harder than it could be.

Yesterday showed that. On 80% of his dropbacks from recollection, Darnold had a body or hand in his face. Yes you have to give the Bills defense alot of credit but the line just wasn't up to the task. And on the occassions the line did give Sam time, he missed some key throws and some open recievers. It just wasn't a good day and that shit is going to happen when you have a 22 year old 2nd year QB playing in his 10th game of his life playing behind one of the worst O-lines in the NFL.

I'm not making excuses...this is the reality of the situation. And this O-line situation which was caused by f***ing Mccagnon ignoring the damn position for the past 5 drafts or in UFA will not be fixed this year. Douglass is going to need a draft and some UFA signings or two to fix it. But fix it he will and once that is done, Sam can truly get to the next level.

Now that said, there are remedies still for this year that Gase can do. I think he needs to have more designated rollouts for Darnold. Sam seems to have his best moments when he is moving out of the pocket and rolling into his throws. Gase had a bad game plan this past week helped in part by a great Bills defense. I'd wager a good amount of money that Gase will figure out what I just said and he will have Sam throwing on the run more next week which hopefully will open things up even more for LevBell and the outsider WR's namely Anderson.

I'm not stepping off the ledge despite the sickening loss yesterday. This team is what it is...a very flawed football team that has alot of talent still and will win some games we don't expect it too and lose some games we think they should win like yesterday. Hence the plight of a .500 football team.

Next year after Douglass fixes the holes we have...don't even get me started about how abysmal this Jet secondary is or the fact that we still haven't had an edge pass rusher since Jonathan Abraham roamed these parts well over a decade ago, is when expectations can soar...at least mine will.

In the meantime, can we just sign Carli Lloyd already and get this kicking issue over with....lol....

Unreal probably another season where the Patriots will be gift wrapped another division. Should be an easy 6-0 or 5-1 at the worst.

No question about it. I don't think it's impossible but Jets pulling off an upset over Pats just got that much harder now that they have AB. I'd probably give us a 10% shot at most and probably more like 5%. Funny before the news about AB going to the Pats became public, I had Jets splitting with the Pats when I looked at the schedule and looking closely at both teams.

I had us beating them the game at home as I felt they were a bit more vulnerable this year than most. Now? A very slight chance to beat them at Met Life. Heck, we'll be fortunate to keep the two games against the Pats even competitive.

Now I'm not one to fall for or go into over reaction mode after just one game even if this is "over reaction Monday"we are celebrating today but the Pats total dismantling of the Steelers last night was as impressive of a win as I've ever seen from that team and they've had a ton of them over the years. They were scary good.

And now they are getting AB....really? What a joke. As if I needed any more reasons to hate that damn team of theirs? I so hate saying this but from what I saw last night, this Patriot team will maybe lose once or twice the entire season making the rest of the year simply about who will play them in the AFC title game(Chiefs again) and who the patsy is in the NFC(I like the Saints) for them to dispose of.

Before I respond I just want to know if you're referring to my posts, specific people (if so, then who) or just general absurd hot takes.

I'm being heavily critical of Darnold's game yesterday and I have serious concerns about his deep ball/ceiling but If anyone thinks I'm saying Darnold is a bust then they literally can't read bc I said the exact opposite. Im just asking bc you did post this literally right after me. Just getting it out there, i was elated to draft him, I loved a lot of what we saw from him last year and I would be shocked if he became a bust.

The Patriots will stop when their coach Darth Vader decides he's through.

I happen to agree. Considering he's likely going to be coaching well into his 70's(he's 67), we are so screwed as he'll be around for at least another 5 years.

The thing is, I can easily see Brady sticking around till he's 47 years old or so as well which is shake your head ridiculous to even fathom but it's quite possible considering the shape Brady keeps himself in.

I'm convinced that all this Patriot success over the past two decades is a curse the football gods put on the Jets for the snaky way they got Curtis Martin to come here and leave the Patriots in late 90's....hmmmm...just sayin...lol

I keep waiting for Brady's diet of water and nitrate heavy soil to catch up to him

This is actually not meant for you specifically. In fact some of the comments you made earlier seemed to jibe and be in line with my thinking that yeah Sam was bad yesterday but the Oline was awful as well which contributed heavily to the bad day by him and the offense.

My comments for the most part are observations I made today and last night when reading some of the laugh out loud comments on some of my go to websites I respect and frequent with regards to yesterday Jets/Bills game.

As I said a few times, the Monday after the first football Sunday of the year after 8 months of no football considering all the hyperbole leading up to opening weekend no matter if you win or lose, people over react moresoe than any other week of the year and it's not even close. Today's comments haven't dissapointed.

Anyways comment away if you like...cheers

I believe we are on a similar wave length on this and I'm just seeing this additional comments now.
