Ehlers is getting paid a lot of money to score 37 points.

37 points is an inaccurate description of Donskoi but it’s an even less accurate description of Ehlers. Ehlers posted his 37 points in 62 games this year and scored 60 points in each of the past two seasons and an especially high percentage of those points came at 5-on-5. He’s also a very good play driver, strong defensively, and and a legitimate top line forward. $6M for 4 more years is a bargain for him.

Why exactly are the Jets looking to move Ehlers? Create more cap space for Laine?

Yes, they have a lot on their plate . Sign Laine and Connor (who should get a bigger contract than Meier) and I believe they want to bring Myers back as well as keep Trouba. Out of all those players, Ehlers is probably lowest on the totem pole (Myers barely trumps him because I think defensive needs are a greater concern).

Still, as JTR says, he's a great young player that is on a good deal that should age even better. Problem is there will be plenty of teams looking to acquire him that will have more ammunition to give the Jets a premium for him.

I just don’t think trading Labanc for another RW solves much. We need another RW in general, our depth on that side is awful if we don’t sign Pavs.

That is what I think too. We need more RW's.

Pavs, Nyquist and Labanc were our 3 RW's in the top-9 this season and we only know 1 of them are coming back. Moving him to get an upgrade on the position would still leave 2 empty spots. Another option at RW we had last year was Donskoi but he is most likely hitting UFA as well.

Did Ehlers and Meier have good chemistry in Hallifax?

(paging that dude who works for the team....)

Haha was that the case? i've never had the time to invest in junior hockey / draft prospecting.
Meier was considered to be a disastrous pick by quite a few people. Closer to a potential Nick Ritchie or Jake Virtanen than what he is right now.

I think a lot of us were disappointed because Rantanen was still available when Meier got picked. I really like Meier but still don't know if he ends up having a better career than Rantanen.

If Hagelin is now making 2.75 AAV, you have to figure Donkey is now looking at 4.25 AAV minimum.

Hagelin is a tough player to use as a contract comparable, though. He's got pretty bad production over the past 3 seasons, but he's also got very strong underlying metrics, he's known as a top notch PK'er, and he's got all of that playoff experience including multiple Stanley Cups.

I think a lot of us were disappointed because Rantanen was still available when Meier got picked. I really like Meier but still don't know if he ends up having a better career than Rantanen.

I was one of the biggest "should have been Rantanen or Barzal" guys on here when we drafted Meier, but right now I would take Meier over Rantanen. I think I would still take Barzal over Meier but there's an argument to be made there in Meier's favor as well.

I just don’t think trading Labanc for another RW solves much. We need another RW in general, our depth on that side is awful if we don’t sign Pavs.

In the short term and the long term, we're going to need an RW that can play on the top line against top competition. (Or an LW who pushes Meier to the right side since Meier is proven in that role.) Labanc has shown a lot of flashes over the course of his career but he has never shown that he can play top competition and I don't think he ever will. I don't want to trade Labanc; I'd much prefer to find a different way to acquire that top line winger and push Labanc down to a softer minutes role on the 2nd line. (Where I think he'll end up thriving for his career.) However, if you can use Labanc as the main chip to acquire a legitimate top line winger who is signed long term in his prime, which Nikolaj Ehlers totally is, you have to make that move. Making that move and re-signing Donskoi or finding a 2RW elsewhere is much more ideal than re-signing Nyquist or Pavelski or signing another non-Panarin UFA to play in that first line role.

I wouldn't worry about it though because it's not realistic. Winnipeg needs centers and defensemen.

.
As long as Barzal and Meier stay close, ill always say Barzal because centers have exponential more value than wingers of similar abilities

Karlsson signed, do the sharks have any money left? I think we have seen the last of Pavs in a sharks jersey. Maybe there is a silver lining to that. Pavs had an excellent season so his value is high. He’s getting up there in age where it’s like the stock market, but low, sell high. If he does move on, he will be missed.

With Karlsson signed @ ~11.5M per year, looks like we got a cap crunch. To fit Timo, Labanc and Pavs, we'll have to get rid of both Braun and Dillon.

Seems like one of those three (Timo, Labanc, Pav's) have seen their last in teal, unless we get rid of Jones, Vlasic or Kane somehow or we get extremely team friendly deals.

You have to think that Merkeley could be dangled for a top forward prospect/young cheap forward that has a deal similar to what Labanc and Meier were on - we'll need the top-9 depth.

Also could be a good thing if we are able to fetch a first round pick for Braun/Dillon and whoever else.

Timo is the next priority. He's a superstar in the making and an essential part of the next big Cup push.

Labanc and Pavelski are obviously next.

I personally really like Donkey and want him back, but only if PDB is actually going to use him properly. I think he really killed our chances of keeping the Donfather. That being said, I do hope he comes back for cheap for just another year or two to build his case as a solidly second-liner before seeking a bigger deal.

I don't give a shit about Nyquist. He was good but not a needle-mover. He'll be more expensive than Donkey or Labanc, while not offering enough over them to justify his potential paycheck, in my opinion.

From CapFriendly, looks like we have about $700K in bonuses from last year that will go against cap this year. Plus the Paul Martin buyout for this year.

So that's $2M we have less to spend under the cap. :-( Going to be real tight to fit folks in.

Just moving Melker and Braun gets em 5.8M in space, add Dillon and its 9M so not crazy too get some wiggle room
