I still believe Pavs stays.

We wont have any idea until we see what Timo and Labanc get. Im guessing they're going to have to move quick on those. Then decide if trading 2/3 players to retain Pavs is worth it. Thats a lot of steps before FA haha going to be wild

I hope so. He's my all time favorite Shark, it would be Marleau leaving times ten sad for me if he leaves. That and I think we are a much better team with him, I mean look at our depth on the right wing + what he means to the room.

He basically proved he's willing to die for this club as well. It would be tough for everyone if he left. But in the end its probably more about term and I cant see DW offering more than 3 years?

I can't see DW even getting to 3 years honestly. Not with the expansion draft coming up and the fact that Pavs likely gets a NMC in his deal. Would say DW offers him 2 years and $12-$14 million.

Pavs seems like a Thornton type (not shocking given they have played and interacted so much together throughout their time as linemates and teammates) that will take a little less and do what is best for the org instead of trying to max out dollars and years. That said, he very well could move on elsewhere, but I would not be shocked to see him take a bit less than the $7.5 mil projection I have seen in a lot of places. If he is willing to do 2 years $12 mil, I am fine bringing him back, but then I am hesitant on Jumbo because it gets very hard to build a bigger and faster roster with both of those guys in significant roles.

Does anyone think Simek could be a good partner for EK65?

I know Simek was very solid with Burns but given the 44/88 pairing in the playoffs I am wondering if it is worth looking at Simek/EK65

Thoughts?

The roster needs a good retooling with the Karlsson signing. We need to get heavier if we are going to make it out of the West, while maintaining our level of speed.

Only issue with EK65 and Simek together is that both are under 6'0 tall which severely limits the reach of that entire pairing. Simek plays bigger with his physical brand, but that doesn't make his arms any longer, hah. That said, Vlasic and Karlsson never seemed to fully click for whatever reason this year so not sure if how they will structure the pairings. Think they go Vlasic-EK65 and Simek-Burns just because there is less hard matching in the regular season and they know that Simek-Burns works.

Simek could be a good partner and I'm open to trying all combinations. Every season is a different season and chemistry between players is a funny and fickle thing sometimes. I want to wait and see what the team looks like before getting into specifics but I can see any of Vlasic, Ryan, Simek, and Dillon being partners to EK65 depending on how the roster shakes out.

Vlasic didnt click with anyone until the playoffs.

I think Vlasic clicked with Heed before the playoffs but since Heed was Karlsson's replacement, that wasn't a viable choice to go with when EK65 got healthy enough to play.

Also, we now have Vlasic and Karlsson as guys we have to protect for the expansion assuming they're not asked to waive which I don't see happening.

I want to keep that Burns Vlasic pair together, they were dominating in the playoffs

I don't know. During the regular season, I just like the idea of having a top pairing guy on the ice at all times. If we're having to go cheap on the 3rd pair RHD then I'd like to have Vlasic there to baby sit. I think Vlasic-Burns or Vlasic-Karlsson is just something this team can choose to go with at any time. I don't think the early season struggles between Vlasic-Karlsson would be the norm for them moving forward.

I think thats a playoff special. Because you shouldn't be playing mid 30's guys 30 minutes a night until the playoffs. Split em up in the regular season to eat minutes

That's fair. Spreading them out across 3 pairings would be fine with me so long as we keep all of their minutes down.

At least we know its possible to do in tight games and whatever situational stuff. I was almost ready to write Vlasic off even

If they move Dillon and Braun, I want them to bring in guys who can kill penalties and I want them to lean on Simek more on the PK as well. If we can at least keep Burns and Karlsson from being the first or second option on the PK then that's a win. It may mean playing a lefty on his off-side but I think it's worth it long term.

Posted this on the tradeboard,

Meier and Labanc will most definitely be signed the only question is how much. It'll definitely be bridge deals, that's the only thing that makes sense for our cap structure and that is the Sharks history. Look at Couture and Hertl as examples. Both players will come cheaper than people who don't follow the Sharks will think. DW has a way of selling our RFAs on team friendly bridge deals.

The big question is Pavs. Option 1, trade some combination of Braun/Dillon/Melker/Dell and get him signed. Option 2, let him walk. I prefer option 1, sign him. I think he'll take slightly less for slightly more years than some Sharks fans would like. I think DW is banking on the next 3ish years are our big shot at a Cup and then after that "**** it" we'll figure that out when we come to it.

In all honesty I want the chaff gone anyway. We can go cheaper than Braun/Dillon/Melker/Dell and probably be better for it. We have prospects who will probably make the team and fill rolls. Donskoi is probably gone, ditto Nyquist. Find cheaper alternatives wherever you can and hope one of the prospects steps up to fill at least a top 9 role.

for pairings, everything is fluid throughout the year and changes with slumps, injuries, etc. Right now, I like the D with Simek no matter how the bottom 2-3 shake out.

The big question now is the offense. If/when pavs resigns, and labanc and meier sign short bridges in the 2.5-4.5M range, then the sharks will need to round out the offense with youth. Donkey and Nyqist are for sure gone. Melker will likely need to be traded for a bag of pucks (his PK work and 12 goals means there may be a market for him, even if small). There are alot of young offensive kids coming up, so The big question is who, if anyone, steps up and grabs a top 9 forward spot.

My Money is on Gambrell and Chekhovich. Chekhovich looked like a stud last preseason, and then followed that up with being top 2 in the QMJHL in scoring and then producing for the Cuda. He has a very high ceiling and I wonder if he doesnt make the leap. Gambrell also looked like he was finding his legs near the end last year. He scored the big goal and was nearly point per game with the cuda. Seems like he might grab a 4th line C spot.

If Karlsson and Burns are both 100% next year, then the O will flow through them and the sharks will be fierce. The other big key is whether Jones can rebound and Boughner can reestablish a solid defensive foundation. If the sharks can score remotely close to last year while defending like the year before, they will be #1 in the league.

My expectations for Labanc and Meier are two year deals but they could be three year bridges. Two years gives them the flexibility of seeing what they can move out for the expansion draft process to re-sign both to term. Like I think it could be easy to convince Seattle to take Kane when he'd only have four years left at that rate or Jones with three years left and use that to keep Labanc and Meier long term after their bridge. If they keep Pavs for three years, you could bridge these two to that term as well.

I think moving on from at least Dillon, Melker, and Dell is feasible and better for the team. I think Bibeau or Korenar can at least provide the same poor performances that Dell and Jones did last year if we're keeping the system as is that'll expose anyone in net. I want someone in Dillon's spot that is a solid PK guy. Melker is too expensive to be a 4th liner who PK's adequately. Trade him, bring up True and have him center the 4th line and move Goodrow to wing. Nothing lost there.
