Shouldn't have traded Kevin for Kris f***ing Russell and a 2nd rounder. He was decent with the Stars . With the Flames it just didn't work out

Jets behind us just keep losing. They had 3 games since Stars went on break and lost all 3 games. Still 4 points behind us and now they have 3 games more played than us .

Yeh looking at the central standings i cant see us finishing outside of the top 3.

Might even somehow be 5 pacific teams make the playoffs....lol.

If the playoffs started today Vegas would jump to the central side of the bracket for a 1st round matchup vs St Louis..i still think they are the best team in the pacific so of they finished in the WC2 it would absolutely load up the central bracket of the playoffs with St Louis, Colorado, Dallas and Vegas (IMO the 4 best teams in the west)

Another hat trick last night for Alex Ovechkin. That's three hatties in the past six games; 16 goals in his past 10 games; and a total of 40 goals so far this season (currently tops in the NHL). . . in 53 games played. . . and all at the age of 34. This dude is a monster and, it's been fun follow his career and root for him. I live in the D.C. area, and watching him lift the Cup two seasons back made me glad to be a hockey fan in general. Surely he has to be a top-5 or top-3 pure goal scorer of all-time, right? Thoughts?

Holy shit he has 3 hat tricks in his past 6 games? In terms of just pure goal scoring he's gotta be #1 of all time and statistically probably by the end of his career

However it is also crazy that he somehow leads them with a -8 (one of 2 minus players on the team, the other one is Jensen at -7 with only 4 points this season) and he also only has 3 game winning goals which is just shocking for a guy with 40 goals already on the best team in the NHL. That's how many GWG's Val Nichushkin has this season :sarcasm:

Still tho 40 goals through 53 games wow

Apparently, you aren’t alone in your opinion. This article—I know, it’s ESPN—thinks the same, considering especially the era he is playing in. I don’t know enough about hockey history to have a strongly-informed opinion. I just know he’s clearly a special player, in a league of his own in certain regards.

Nieuwy's 2010 first rounder Jack Campbell is now with the Leafs. Good luck to him. If he can handle the pressure there he will be hailed hero by that insane fanbase and media landscap . IRC the pressure of him beeing a lottery pick hurt him while he was with the Stars.

He was picked 11th, that's not really a lottery pick.

Any pick of a team not in the playoffs is a lottery pick because the team is in the lottery. Otherwise there would be only 3 lottery picks every year.

Jack Campbell couldn't handle the pressure in Austin, Texas.. two bad games in Toronto and hes going to want out of town.

Jack Campbell admitted he lacked mental toughness so I'm not questioning that, but lets not ignore the fact that Dallas was at time they had 1 goalie coach in the NHL who rarely spent any time in Texas. Most other teams were already carrying goalie coaches in the AHL, and Dallas didn't make that move until very soon after trading Campbell. Almost all of the comeback pieces that have been produced by LA writers, their goalie coaches and development were key factors that Campbell mentioned. He graciously never took a shot at Dallas other than stating one wasn't available as far as I can remember.

Campbell was a disappointment and should never have been drafted by Dallas in the first round that high. There is still quite a bit to be said about the absurdity of not actually having coaching and development in place for such an important position. It was not just Campbell that was pretty atrocious down in Texas. Outside of the odd season, most goalies struggled for Texas. I think you can also question the wisdom about the devotion to Mike Valley despite the NHL goalies also really struggling. Valley, not surprisingly, IMO, hasn't worked for an NHL team since he left Dallas.

It wasn't a financial decision either. Gaglardi owned the team for 4 or 5 years before a goalie coach was hired in Texas. That falls on the GM of the team. Gaglardi was heavily investing in the business side of the team, scouting, coaching, everything almost immediately including poaching key staff from Detroit that Nill wanted. If the GM had made a goalie coach in the AHL a priority, it would have happened.

The majority of the time of Campbells "development" with the Stars was while the team was going through bankruptcy . I can't fault anyone of the current management too much for Campbell. By the time they took over he was already not looking all that great.

That's not accurate. Just as I said previously.

Tom Gaglardi officially announced as owner: November 18, 2011
Jack Campbell's first pro season: 2012-13
Jim Nill hired as GM: April 29, 2013
Jack Campbell traded: June 25, 2016
Jim Bedard's first season with the organization: 2017-18

His amateur years that were during bankruptcy are in no way impacted by the fact Dallas doesn't have an owner. No NHL team is hiring dedicated goalie coaches for their draft prospects or any other position for that matter. They have a guy that touches base and works with draft picks throughout the year sporadically, and they allow the amateur team to coach and develop them during the season.

I'm not attacking Jim Nill so there's no need to defend him. I'm merely pointing out common knowledge that Dallas was one of the later teams to actually add a dedicated goalie coach for their farm system. It's not a coincidence that coincides with abysmal goalie development for the team. Not surprisingly, during this time frame we'ere talking about, the teams the were considered among the best at developing goalies were also the ones that had AHL goalie coaches.

I'm just trying to point out a very one sided conversation was happening about Campbell. It is disingenuous to lay a large amount of blame on the player without acknowledging that a team that was not in bankruptcy and also had a blank check from the owner on both the business and hockey side to add staff (size of scouting staff significantly increased with Nill's hiring) ... chose to not employ a full time goalie coach in the AHL despite having little success developing the position.

That position was not a priority for Jim Nill. For whatever reason, the organization ignored the goalie position largely until 2017-18 including choosing to not make changes in net at the NHL level despite numerous failures. I think it was very late in the game, but I give Nill credit for making sweeping changes in 2017 and beyond. In that one off-season they buyout Niemi, sign Bishop, drafted Oettinger, signed Bedard, and then followed up a year later by investing in Khudobin.

I also find it odd that they had no goalie coach at the AHL level. Given how poorly our D prospects tended to develop, gotta wonder if there was a D coach, too. Or, the forwards, LOL.

Back in the day, when the Boys and 49's were tops in the NFL, it seemed like the niners got great talent out of mid round picks (Montana, Clark, etc.) As much as scouting acumen, I always thought it was because they picked guys who fit a consistent system and coached them well via the assistant coaches to play that system. Thus, IMHO, in the NHL having a great AHL coaching system pays off. Why draft a goalie at 11 if you have no plans of really developing him with a great coach? It all fits together.

I understand they won an AHL championship and went to the finals another time, at least after 2013. But sometimes the T-Stars have had lots of AHL vets there to do it. Not always, so yes, some generalization here. But, it just seems to me the Stars have had trouble developing prospects compared to other teams, which luckily, seems to be changing a bit.

Until very recently, and especially in their first season when they almost won the Calder Cup, they were very veteran heavy. All of that said, Most AHL teams do only have 2 guys on the bench plus the goalie coach. I think you are on to something about adding to the staff. The investment would be minimal to hire a guy in a full time role that was similar to Rich Peverley's current role. He mentors and coaches up the amateur draft prospects in NA. You could have a full time guy in Austin being even more hands on ... maybe even something closer to skills coach with an emphasis on development.

Dallas has that position with Stan Tugolukov. He's been with the team a while since his hiring coincided with drafting Nichushkin. He's taken on a bigger role, but he was Nuke's handler in a way early on to help with the transition.

The cap limits you in terms of players so it makes the most sense to invest heavily in coaching and development considering the only teams that survive long term are teams that draft and develop.

removing the only team that is geographically close to the Texas Stars. That kind of sucks for them.

That really sucks. I would also suspect thy would try and move them over to the Pacific. I don't know how that would work though considering the Seattle team will presumably also try and get their AHL team in the Pacific. I wonder if the Colorado Eagles jump over to the Central eventually.

There's going to be quite a bit of juggling I assume in both the AHL and the NHL. Vegas' affiliate was Chicago. St. Louis' affiliate was San Antonio.

I kind of wonder if Phoenix comes to the Central in the NHL. Colorado Eagles coming over in the AHL to the Central. Would assume that Chicago (AHL) could become St. Louis' (NHL) affiliate.

You'd almost have perfect coverage in the AHL and NHL in the Central. Only the Griffins (AHL) wouldn't have an NHL affiliate in the Central (NHL). Phoenix would be the only NHL team with an AHL affiliate outside of the Central.
