Whats Wrong with Connor Mcdavid this Season Lowest PPG and Gpg Output in 7 8 Years for Him

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

One thing of note, though, is he has hardly any empty net points this year (I think just one) and we're now in a time in NHL history where some of the Art Ross contenders are piling up at least a dozen.

If you want to bring down the PPGs of his competitors by taking away EN points then we should do the same for 3 on 3 OT points; both of which he, Mac, Drai and Kucherov have all benefited by in recent seasons.

This doesn't move the needle much for Crosby vs. Benn. What is more relevant is point shares with other elite offensive talent. Benn shared 57% of his points with Seguin who was 2nd in PPG that season. McDavid has shared 65% of his points with Draisaitl who is clearly the superior player this year to McDavid.

All that being said, like Crosby in 14/15, this regular season doesn't diminish he legacy, it simply adds nothing to it. Crosby returned to form after a coaching change early the next season that saw a return to a game plan that didn't stifle the Pens offensive talent.

We'll see what the playoffs bring. Perhaps the he and the Oilers are sleepwalking a bit through this season.

People talking about his speed are incorrect, in my opinion. I've watched most of his games for the past six years or so, and I don't think he's lost anything in speed.

He clearly hasn't lost anything in 'desire', as I think he desperately wants to win.

For me, he hasn't been consistently as great in 2023-24 or 2024-25 as he was from 2021 to 2022-23 (or even as consistent as he was from 2016-17 all the way through 2022-23). That is to say, there are times when he cranks it up to peak level (like, at times last playoffs, or around November-December this season), but he doesn't do it as consistently anymore. And yes, his shot has been kind of off since October 2023, for reasons nobody seems to know, but presumably it's related to either of the two minor injuries he sufferered at that time.

McDavid now is kind of like Wayne Gretzky was from 1988 to 1991, which is to say he can still win the scoring race each year if things go well, but he's not the best guy as consistently anymore, probably due to two factors:
-- Lack of caring about regular season. Not to say he doesn't care, but at this point the regular season has become the long-ish wait for the playoffs.
-- Accumulation of wear & tear, minor injuries, etc. (I think this has greatly affected McDavid's shot.) He's quite engaged physically a lot of the time, but I think there's a thing when you start to become a veteran and you've now suffered a few injuries, wherein you just aren't quite as willing to go the extra distance to risk pain or injury; i.e., you start to play more around the perimeter and don't rush the net as much.

McDavid also got married last summer, which for some guys can be a transition period into thinking about things besides hockey a bit more. There might also be a thing where, after the intensity of last spring's playoff run, he's having a hard time adapting himself to non-playoff hockey while also trying to gear up for the playoffs.

I would not be surprised if McDavid roars back and wins the scoring title next season. However, right now, all he cares about is the playoffs.

Too bad he doesn't care about the regular season anymore, the Oilers are playing with a bit of fire by not winning the very winnable Pacific and having to play an extra motivated Kings team who may have home ice advantage.

High milage player taking its toll now. This is what happens when you play your best player 55 mins a night.
Draisaitl and Mackinnon are in the same boat as far as ice time and they are having two of the best seasons in their careers,

What a non-thinking hot take.

clearly declining.

The Sharks would take him off your hands for Halak, Ryder, and a 2nd.

I suspect in one year’s time, we’ll be discussing his status among the five greatest players ever, when he’s wrapping up a sixth scoring title, has two Conn Smythes to his name paired with the Cup win, and wondering if he could possibly win three Smythes in a row.
