Deep breaths, I can feel your rant about overrating/hyping Canadian kids coming on

Don't be too nervous, we have Nik Bobrov pulling a lot of leg work in Russia for us, and we've been drafting more Russian kids recently than in prior years. Really hoping Tkachyov impresses in camp

No, I'm alright.

I'm a North American, but North Americans are over drafted. I wish one team would do research on this, and figure out that picking the Europeans that no one watches with your later picks will get you ahead. Why pick a NA who everyone has seen 1 million times who can't even get picked in one of the first few rounds?

The only European we picked had a terrible season, and we spent two later picks on Ronning and Fontaine, not what I'd consider to be a smart idea. They messed up the later round picks last year. Gotta get it right this year, our system is barren.

Off the top of my head (in alphabetical order).... Alexei Lipanov, Kirill Slepets, Andrei Altybarmakyan, Kirill Belyayev, Yegor Fateyev, Kirill Kozhevnikov, Artem Manukyan, Pavel Shen, Daniil Skorikov, Razat Timirov, Alexei Toropchenko, Artur Tyanulin, Anton Vasilyev, Alexander Yaremchuk...

There could be others, but these are some who I feel may fit the bill....

Edit: Not Russian, but he could become something special....

This guy is my favorite player in this draft, and I think the best overager. Not saying he'll be the best player from this draft, but he reminds me some of Gusev, and he grew up playing with Buchnevich, they are from the same town, grew up in the same team, they know each other. Might be the best current player in this draft, also. Terribly underrated, no one watches his KHL team play, always been overlooked for Russian National Teams, despite being good enough. One thing I know for sure, the Rangers have definitely watched him play a lot, probably more than any other team.

A few other overagers I like.

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=313588 -Excellentshot, goal scorer, good skater.
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=312234 -Playmaking center, speed, skill.
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=285681 -Good KHL production, great shot, hockey IQ.
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=248278 -Terrible skater, but incredible playmaking, hockey IQ, playing in the NCAA's right now.

And then an overager who I'm not the biggest fan of, but some are. http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=168686 -Gritty center, not big offensive upside, but productive and could be a bottom 6 C.

Among 1st year draft eligible players who aren't 1st, 2nd round picks in a lot of these rankings.

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=312832 -1st round talent coming into season, terrible first half of season, regained form 2nd half, skill, creativity, skating
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=359981 -Listed size is wrong, more like 6'0. Good skater, good skill, very productive, very young for 2017 draft.

Thanks for the reply.

Tronna took a bunch of overagers... it's a good strategy because you are getting closer to a finish product and you'll know what you have sooner rather than later.

Everyone wants the next Panarin, and some of these guys are boom or bust types. If the skill and skating are there... then it's just systems and insulation for an offensive player.

Maybe there is a diamond in the rough, but when Gusev & Kaprizov come over... you can bet they post some filthy numbers on the PP right away.

TB is going to have Gusev, Stamkos & Kucherov next year on the PP. Hedman at the Point. If they add another RH at the point or net front, they'll have a top 3 PP in the game.

One timers galore.

With the KHL maturing more and more, now with the MHL and VHL in place for a similar system, it surely pays off to scout more heavily in Russia. As someone who lives in Europe, it's easier to follow the Russian and Swedish leagues. I have to say, they do a good job developing prospects in Russia these days whereas previously they would have been left out to dry if the team simply didn't have enough spots on the team.

To be fair, our 3 late round NA picks from last year look good. Gettinger, Fontaine and Ronning all had good seasons and progressed nicely.
Are there EU players that had better seasons and would have been better picks? Definitely, but all 3 were well above average picks, well above.

Oh, I agree about the 3 CHL picks. They have done well. But having 3 CHL players in the later rounds do well isn't really the norm. The 2016 draft shows the exact opposite of what we have been saying, but I think overall, it's better to go with European players in the later rounds, especially since a lot fall through the cracks in terms of scouting.

The Rangers have ties with Europe, through the players they drafted/acquired in earlier years that have become solid NHL-players in Zuccarello, Lindberg, Fast etc.

The reason we signed Stromwall is probably due to Kovacs, and Leedahl was signed while being teammates with Zborovskiy. I hope the Rangers go the Euro-route more often in later rounds

Think I said in November just keep the first or package it with whatever necessary for Lijegren and I stand pat with that. Doesn't even look that far fetch today. I'll keep dreaming.

I want Liljegren on this team. If we somehow draft him, I am going to Sweden to catch some games (Assuming he stays in Sweden for one more year)

Okay, draftniks, talk to me about an I Suzuki. All I've heard is that he's a highly skilled top 6 center. And, ever since I heard that the Rangers interviewed him t the combine, I got the feeling the Rangers would target him if they moved up.

What would we offer in a potential move up though? We have no 2nd or 3rd round picks...

Despite what Brooks has to say on the matter, IMO, any deal involving Stepan likely involves a pick in the top 15, be it Arizona, Vegas or Carolina.

All I know of Suzuki is what I've watched in Youtube videos. And what I watched was a very creative players with a great shot.

Imo, one of the smartest hockey players in the whole draft. Offense, defense, all situations, just a smart hockey player with soft hands, excellent shot. Hard to knock off the puck despite his average size, also one of the youngest in the draft.

Sounds like someone they should pick.

I love him, he's very very good. There's a chance he might slip but it's not that big. I wouldn't move up for him though (then again, i wouldn't move up for anyone except Pettersson and MAYBE Liljegren).

He should be a top-10 pick in this draft but there's some guys with more size that may go ahead of him even though I don't think they're better players.

We'd have to trade up to get this guy there's no way he's going to last till 21.

Would he last to 15, and if the choice is Middlestadt or Suzuki, who are you taking?

Anything is Possible, he's not small and he doesn't play small but some teams might balk at his size and go with a bigger player like the stiff Rasmussen.

Middelstadt, but just barely. He's a natural center who also has great skill.

No way Stepan alone brings in a high pick like that. They'd want Skjei too, probably.

Edited to add: If we can unload Stepan it'll be a miracle with his NMC kicking in July 1.

What? You don't think you'd need to trade Stepan plus Skjei just to get a top 15 pick?!?

In this draft, Stepan + Skjei should return the #1 OA plus additional assets.

He's one of my favorite player in the draft. I think he's the type of player that both has the ability to take over a game, and also elevates the overall game of others around him. Gadjovich went from a 14 goal scorer to a 46 goals scorer on his wing. When Gadjovich came off his wing Hancock played with him to the same results. I think he's a winner, and a leader. He's a small guy that also doesn't play small. Like a Marchand. How that translates into the NHL is anyone's guess, but he to me looks like the complete package.

Knocks on him : Size, skating. The skating portion, I don't think is a huge issue. He's not a terrible skater. He's choppy. Sort of like Zucc maybe.

If 70A happens, I wouldn't be super excited if they drafted him with that selection.
