2017 Draft & UDFA Thread - Part III

I would not be happy at all with Thomas at #21, i'd be fine with him if we trade down though.

Interesting to hear multiple scouts talking about Tolvanen slipping now, he's someone i'd love to grab, we haven't had a true sniper in a while.

More times than not teams stay where they are and take the guy they like. Trading down does not always mean the player they like will be there.

IMO they're going to keep that pick, trade up a bit, or trade it for a young player/prospect who can play sooner rather than later.

Here's my top 40 Ranking.

Two Horse Race!

1. Patrick Too big to fail!
2. Hischier I can already picture him in that disgusting Orange and Black!

Next tier impact players
3. Suzuki The little engine that could. Fav player in the draft.
4. Glass This is NOT Tanner! Super smart player with the skillset of an impact top 6 player.
5. Vilardi Physical, Center with size and skill doesn’t fallout of the top 5.
6 Pettersson Maybe the most gifted offensive player in the draft.
7 Mittlestadt Speed to burn, skillset to take over. Not concerned about the lack of physical strength the combine exposed. Strength and conditioning will only make him more of the threat. Might have the most upside of all players.
8 Makar Super slick skating RD, PP QB. Hyped up off the charts, but has deserved the praise.

3rd tier round 1
9 Heiskanen The complete package! Steady Eddie, top pairing dman. Could go #3 overall.
10 Tippett I was hard on him earlier. Couldn’t figure out if he reminded me of Brandon Pirri or Pat Kane. Skill, and shot were too much to keep out of the top 10 in this draft.
11 Necas Great skater, hockey sense and a motor.
12 Kostin Big players with a an attitude are somewhat abundant. Big players with moxy, and skills are not. Minus the injury he would be in my top 5
13 Brannstrom Hoping the NY Rangers view him the same way HFNYR board does. Dangerous player.
14 Liljegren Dissapointed enough to drop out of the top 5. Too good to drop any lower then 15.
15 Rasmussen Everyone has him top 10. Not convinced, but size and skill keep him top 15
16 Valimaki Steady Eddie D mean, with skating and a head for the game.

One of these could be Blue!
17 Vesalainen All the tools are there for top 10, but hasn’t impressed in international competition.
18 Tolvanen Excellent hands, amazing PP threat. Would be higher if he had more compete level.
19 Foote Size, hockey IQ, Pedigree. Could be more physical.
20 Yammamoto Talented, smart, creative…He doesn’t know he’s 5’8â€â€¦If he even is 5’8â€
21 Andersson 2 way winger, with lots of character. Safe pick, bottom 6 player.
22 Poehling Physical power forward. I think he’s underrated. Reminds me of Brandon Dubinsky.
23 DiPietro Seems like he’s an NHL caliber player already. Gets into a zone, and is super tough to score on
24 Ratcliffe Giant of a man, who also plays with grit. Has skillset as well. Hes not Rick Nash as someone compared him to.
25 Hague Woodlief calls him a man-child! Big , physical, dman. I see Ryan Graves though, not Colton Parayko.

Late 1st Safe plays
26 Boqvist I don’t think he will be drafted in the first round, but I do think he has the tools to have a lengthy NHL career. Speed to burn with playmaking ability.
27 Thomas Playmaking center, with good wheels. Likely goes in the first round.
28 Bowers Responsible Center headed to a great program at BU. Better skater then Poehling, lacks compete level.
29 Oettinger Big netmider with excellent mobility between the pipes.
30 Robertson Power forward, with hands, that lacks skating. Always factors in games despite being slow-footed.
31 Comtois Solid checking winger, that fell out of the top 10, top 20, but not top 31. Prime candidate for a bounce back season.

Are they firsts, or are they 2nds?
32 Geekie Excellent shooter, with slick PP skills. Always around the puck. Questionable skater.
33 Popugaev Big wildcard player. Size, skill and maybe a better skater then he gets credit for. The right mentor will light a fire under this sleeping giant!
34 Anderson-Dolan He’s Jesper Fast. Same speed, same grit. Unsung hero. I think he needs to move to wing.
35 Vaakanainen Weak draft on high end talent, stacked with smoothe skating defenseman. Vaakanainen could certainly go in the first round.
36 Cockerill Good luck finding a faster, better skater in the entire draft. Relentless player.
37 Jokiharju Plays very soft, but offensive RHD has great skillset and plays a smart game.
38 Lind Skilled center with vision. Needs more JAM!
39 Norris Big kid, does everything good, but not great. Can drive the net. Has lots of character.
40 Walsh Gets very little mention, but yet another RHD that can skate and QB PP.

Pronman projected Robert Thomas to the Rangers at 21. Liljegren, Yamamoto and Chytyl are next three picks.

I don't follow draft prospects like many of you do but the range of opinions of players once you get out of the top ten is wild.

He mentioned Thomas and Yamamoto for the Rangers.

Its unclear how much he actually knows. Some picks he references sources, others he says "player A would be a good fit" for this team or that team.

So every year, the day before the actual draft, I compile a bunch of BOLD predictions that I think could happen and surprise some people. This is just for ***** and gigs, so let me know what you guys think....

- Devils will pick Nico Hischier with the 1st pick.

- Nolan Patrick will slide a bit, due to injury concerns, but still be selected in the top 5.

- Casey Mittelstadt will fall far, but still be picked in the 1st round.

- Some team will reach for Kailer Yamamoto in the top 15.

- There will be a lot of movement on the first day of the draft, including Matt Duchene.

- Vegas will not keep all of their 1st rounders tomorrow. Will trade back to grab more picks.

- Filip Chytil/Jaret Anderson-Dolan/Ivan Lodnia will all be selected in the 1st round.

- At least two goalies will be taken in the 1st round. 1st one will be DiPietro; 2nd will be Oettinger.

- Nikita Popugaev/Kole Lind/Robert Thomas will NOT be selected in the 1st round.

- The Rangers will make a move during the draft, be it the 1st day or the 2nd day, but they will have only ONE 1st rounder.

- The Rangers will select Callan Foote, even if Brannstrom still on the board.

Trading down is good value though, trading up is bad value... and IMO Thomas at #21 is bad value... i want NYR to get good value out of our 1st rounder :P

Nice list, don't like Foote much though :P

Agree on Lodnia, he's so good... His stats are pretty much amazing..

I think DiPietro is too old to re-enter the draft.

You do know there's another goalie named DiPietro?

I'm going to predict we pick Conor Timmins. Would be ideal if we could trade down to do it but there it is.

Tolvanen isn't going to BC anymore...admissions rejected him

In a huge blow to the Boston College men’s hockey program, it is being reported that Eeli Tolvanen has been rejected by BC admissions and will not be playing for the Eagles. We have been hearing rumblings of this being a probable outcome for a couple months now, so it seems likely the reports are accurate.

Tolvanen was set to be the shining star in next year’s class and would have been a much needed boost to BC’s offense. He led the Sioux City Musketeers with 54 points and 30 goals in 52 games this past season, plus he had 10 points in 13 playoff games. Tolvanen also had a strong WJC in 2017, despite playing for a struggling Team Finland. He was tied for the team lead (with incoming Eagle Aapeli Räsänen) with 6 points.
