Honest question to you guys, are we really expecting to get both Giroux and Tavares for this? That would be super awesome, I just feel like last year really boosted our expectations, and we should temper them a little bit. To have 3 centers of McDavid, Tavares, and Giroux would be insane.

I think this year has a TON of potential, especially if we can get the flames pair, and Subban on defense, but it just seems like most years it never comes together like that.

I'm not expecting Giroux. He has nothing to prove after last year. Tavares I expect (if available) because of his personal history. McDavid is a given.

The primary reason for optimism is the upcoming World Cup. If some players want to bolster their chances for making that team, they will probably accept the invitation. Another positive is that Treliving is the GM, and GMs usually get their better players to attend. If he brings Monahan, Giordano and Brodie, that's a great start. Subban will be interesting, since history and his recent comments indicate that he will go, though we don't know his health situation.

So looking back to 2004, here are the players that did both the WHC, and the WC.

Brewer, Neidermeyer, Heatley, Morrow, Smyth, Luongo.

From that group, certainly Heatleys big performance boosted him into a spot, and Morrow didn't hurt his chances either, Brewer was actually always very good for Canada, but kind of an odd pick to be there, but did play well.

Luongo, Neidermeyer, and Smyth were likely going to be on the team either way.

Frankly the 2004 WHC team wasn't star studded, and didn't seem to be aided too much by the upcoming World Cup. Coming off the 2003 gold medal also didn't seem to boost it too much either.

I'm not expecting a good team to show up, but speculating that one might is better than the alternative. My real expectations is for Hockey Canada to mail this one in. Fly in, go through the motions, beat some crappy teams, play a 1/4 game and then hello summer.

Oh man, that would be so disappointing. I think we can still get a decent team to go. Any idea who the coaching staff could be?

I'm hoping for Babcock...

You're always so pessimistic and skeptical when it comes to team Canada and their performance on tournaments, whether it is WHC or WJC... A little bit of optimism wouldn't be bad! :)

But I agree that probably all of us here, are being way too optimistic when creating possible rosters. We'll see.

Haha, everyone expects Canada to be good so everyone is playing 100% against them.

and with good reason. We can all agree that last year's team was great, a treat to watch, but as far as names on a roster go, they weren't demonstratively better than any other year, what was different is that they were well coached and highly motivated...and that was the difference.... and that hasn't always been the case.

I think you underestimate how hard it is to get guys to go to this thing. Unfortunately our country just doesn't care about this as much as the Europeans, you won't have our stars getting booted out of the playoffs and jumping on the plane the same night to get to this tourney Ovechkin or Sedin style.

When you've got your top eligible 20 guys in the playoffs, then you've got 25-35 guys that turn you down, it's hard to put teams together. I know hockey Canada has a lot of flaws, but when you start comparing it to the other National Programs, it's looking pretty good. We had 3 early quarter exits, but that was bad luck as much as anything.

The context is quite different. Canada has far more young (mid 20s and younger) high level players than was the case in 2004. That's cause for optimism. It's certainly possible that there is no bump in participation from the World Cup though.

Bill Peters makes sense if Carolina misses out. He's on the Canadian coaching staff at the upcoming World Cup and is a Babcock guy. Either TSN or Friedman mentioned the possibility last week as well.

I believe so. Out of the 5 QF exits in a row (2010-2014), 4 of them were one goal games (1-2, 3-4, 2-3 SO, 2-3), and in all those games Canada was leading after 2nd period. Now there's time to win some golds

win this year's WHC and 2017 WJHC, and as far as I'm concerned, Hockey Canada gets a free pass until the next Olympics. provided of course it will be an NHL Olympics. If it isn't that, then I don't really care about the Olympics. That goes for the World Cup as well, don't really care what happens there.

Yeah I agree on the first part. On the other hand though, so do a lot of other teams. I looked back at our 2013 and 2014 rosters, and they were not strong. The 2014 one makes sense because of the Olympics.

I think this year we should expect a slightly above average team this year, but probably shouldn't get spoiled and expect the 2015 roster every year.

Makes sense!, although wasn't he routinely criticized by Canes fans last year as a coach without a clue? I don't follow the Canes that closely since the Staals decided they no longer wanted to be impact players, and Skinner was never a good enough reason to track the Canes.

As for other business, did you happen to catch any of the Blues Sharks game? Howbout that Fabbri. dude is a gamer. If Blues bow out then realistically Schwartz and Fabbri would be in. We can dream big and hope that Pietrangelo is up to it, but that's just more silly optimism. Blues eliminate the Hawks in the 1st. rd. anyway.

I've heard a lot of praise for him this year. Carolina has at the very least performed above expectations.

Pietrangelo has no real reason not to go, unless he considers his spot on the 2014 Olympic team to be indefinite. Schwartz I am a big fan of, the new type of winger that Canada seems able to produce. Fabbri who knows.

classic. I'm all in on Shirley after that historic performance at the World Juniors... oh wait...I think that was in bizarro world.

That just proves the point. That team flamed out due to their stubborn refusal to select Collin Shirley - Slayer of Nations.

Ya, if only we had Shirley, what might have been. It reminds me of the Frank Corrado snub in 2013. oh, what might have been.

I just noticed that Hockey Canada followed the NHL and changed its website. What is it with this nonsense, is there only 1 company building and maintaining websites around the world and everything has to be that one format?

just a complete fail on all counts.

Dunno, I don't think Lowry would have gotten the best out of Shirley.

Lowry didn't get the best out of anybody.

I do hope you realize I was goofing...

or maybe you were goofing and it went over my head.

anyway, it was all reductio ad absurdum.

it's official, Nigel Dawes and Dustin Boyd will play for Kazakhstan at this year's WHC. American Brandon Bochenski will also suit up the Kazakhs.
