Severson's also shown flashes, but I think expectations got a little off the rails when he scored four times in his first eight NHL games. I'd hate to deal him now since he's still got a year left on his ELC, unless it was for a top 6 forward.

eklund is saying we are kicking tires on Chara I am not opposed to it

I saw this a mile away. I knew Chara would be a Kings target in the offseason. Eklund or no Eklund, I can totally see this trade going down with Boston retaining and the Kings sending back Fobert+. Fits in DL's MO.

Forgot about retention. Would totally fit Lombardi's style, especially the fact that it is a player Lombardi went after aggressively in the mid-00's.

While definitely on the tail end of his career, couldn't Chara still help the PK?

Or would he be in the box already for hooking or holding?

I'm thinking the latter. He's got a bomb of a shot though, he just couldn't keep up with the pace of the league nowadays.

Maybe Gravel and Dowd are the answers to those questions. What GM is handing out top 4 defensemen? Could the Kings afford over $6m per year for Yandle?

The Kings don't have to be contenders in October. If they don't meet any or all needs in the next week, that's ok. Let the young guys play. See what happens. If the Kings are good, do something by the deadline. If they're not, at least they've got the 2017 1st. They've got until March/April to figure out if they're in a position to win next year.

Amen.

DL is in no-win land on this board now though. He stands pat, people get pissed that he's not improving the team. He makes some trades, people get pissed that he's renegging on his word and giving up assets. He makes a signing, people get pissed that Gravel and Dowd get their spots stolen/no youth in the lineup.

It does show, on one hand, the crossroads our team truly is at and the tough decisions management faces right now, but I hope that people realize there isn't one singular right answer at this juncture.

Im still hoping King or Clifford is moved. Both are replaceable and slow and have no ****in skill besides maybe holding onto the puck. King is going to walk next year regardless as he is going to be looking for a raise and that would be dumb of us since we have Mersch, Brodzinski, Kempe and others in the Minors.

Clifford getting paid 1.6 for 4th line is the worst. I really think Dean and co thought he would surpass King and hence why they gave King short term n Cliffy long term. But Clifford stagnated and should get moved. Mersch is easily capable of replacing Clifford on the 4th line if not even King on the 3rd.

IF there's one thing Clifford is NOT, it's slow. He's as good a 4th liner as you will find in the league. Hits, fast, great at possession. He's been totally underrated around here in the last year or two. He's not even overpaid imo, but he's a sacrifice-able salary and moveable because he actually have value around the league (vs. say Brown).

Mersch does not replace Clifford. Mersch replaces King imo though King's IQ is definitely underrated. I like him more than most but I see King as the most movable piece on the roster.

Im in love with our 2014 draft and Cernak , Dergachyov and Wagner from 2015.

My dark horse to become quality players for us down the line are Wagner and Brodzinski.

Kempe-Kopitar-Toffoli
Pearson-Carter-Amadio
Mersch-Dergachyov-Brodzinski
Andreoff-Dowd-Shore

In 3 years ?

I'm also pretty stoked about Cernak and Brodz. I LOVE Dergachyov, but I'm worried about his development and NOW I'm also worried he may never leave the KHL, but man, do I love that kid.

My extreme dark horse is Lowry.

I thought this too but I thought it last year. Kinda crazy it's coming up now.

Everyone hear should read Mayors two part draft article.

It appears Gravel is a lock, Scuderi to the minors and Forbort will be traded.

Doughty-McNabb
Muzzin-Martinez
Green-Gravel

So if the Kings add another D then Gravel will be a healthy scratch or rotate in for Greene or McNabb.

If Gravel emerges as a legit pro then the Kings could deal one of Muzzin or Martinez for forward help next summer. Will Gravel be expansion eligible?

In terms of forward, if Kings have moved on from Lucic, expect King to stay but possible Clifford moved. Kings will need to move out a LW so they can get Mersch and Andreoff in the bottom six LW.

Chances are it will be the same people complaining in all 3 cases

I don't think he is in "no-win" land, but he is in "can-lose" land.

I'm sorry, but the moves have been failures since 2014 and I'm not going to give him some sweetheart pass by saying "he just can't win" when winning is the whole point of his job.

I'm not expecting anything major, which is fine. I think most on here will get on board with that because that is the reality of the Kings current situation.

If I'm not mistaken Charas cap hit it 7 mill next season and goes down to 3.5 the following season.

One of the hinky deals for old men

That can't be the case the AAV remains the same for the whole contract.
So it's at just under 7M the whole way through.
I know the sites have him that way but I don't know how that could work under AAV. Will have to ask a few questions to figure it out for sure. Since it was under the old CBA as well.
He only makes 5M this year and 4M next.
Which makes it very interesting in the fact that they can retain upto 50% or just under 3.5M but they would only be paying in money 2.5M and 2M in each of the years if they did it.

Edit: found it it was part of the Iiya Kovalchuck rule. So yes it's accurate he has a 7M cap hit this year and 4M the last.
So a retained deal would then be around 3.5M in the first year and 2M the second at 50%.

The Kings shouldn't be letting any NHL bodies go. That was a issue, depth.

Now we want to replace that very little depth the Kings do have with Unknowns....

With Lucic headed to market, negotiations with Trevor Lewis have picked up. Hockey ops source says they're "ongoing."

...and here is that "can-lose" territory I was talking about.

There is nothing really wrong with the guy as a bottom 6 player.
I think most of the grief he gets is because he was a first round top 20 pick.
So more is/was expected.
As long as they don't overpay there is nothing wrong with keeping him.
