This Memorial Cup game is a lot of fun to watch.

Edit- Tkachuk with the game winner. Have seen on the main board some think he's most likely to bust out of the bigger name guys, and haven't really understood why. Think he's going to be a very good prayer in the pro's.

NHL.com has an updated mock out, and has us taking Luke Kunin at #16

16. Detroit Red Wings - Luke Kunin, C, University of Wisconsin (BIG10)
A lethal finisher capable of creating offense each shift, the right-shooting Kunin (6-0, 193) was named to the Big Ten Conference All-Freshman team after leading Wisconsin with 19 goals, five power-play goals and 127 shots on goal in 34 games.

I'd be happy with Rubtsov or Kunin, but I think I'd prefer Kunin if we take a forward for his scoring ability/potential.

If we're even slightly favoring defense, I don't see us taking someone like Kunin ahead of one the 2nd tier D's like Fabbro, McAvoy or Bean. The only available forward I would consider on those lists would be Jost and perhaps Rubtsov if they think he's got legit offensive potential.

I could see that. I would prefer defense, ideally.

Think Jost's WJC puts him in top 10-12 territory, unfortunately.

If Fabbro and McAvoy are gone, I think we would be in an interesting spot. Although if that happens, maybe one of forwards like Keller or McLeod drops.

Edit- why wouldn't you consider Kunin?

It wouldn't be a bad pick but I just think the forward should be significantly better than the available D options if they're focusing on D. But if you consider Kunin, would you also consider Bellows, Jones, Gauthier...?

Honestly I haven't seen Kunin much this season but feel that if the consensus top ~10-12 forwards are all gone, it's better to pick a D.

No, for the sole reason that I think Kunin projects better as a center than any of those guys.

For the record, I'd prefer a defenseman at 16 ideally.

Not sure how I'd feel about if that was Bean, though.

Hasn't Kunin played left wing all season for Wisconsin?

I think he played mostly LW, but I think he played center for the USNTDP team before that, and I think his game projects very well at center overall.

I don't see Bean still being on the board at 16.

I'm banking on Dante Fabbro still being around at 16.

I personally would draft Charlie McAvoy, but no chance half the league passes him up.

I feel pretty confident that 2 of Fabbro Bean and McAvoy are left. It would be pretty D heavy if 5 have been taken in the first 15 especially with none of them likely to be top 5 picks simply due to upside. So that would mean half the teams from 6-15 would have to take D...I don't see that happening and if it does maybe a guy like Keller is left and we can be set at forward and worry about D with the team's next 11 or so picks

Im really hoping 1/3 of the big 3 Dmen fall into the 12-13 range and we make a move

I tend to agree with you. I would also point out that one or two guys consistently ranked outside of the top 15 will likely find their way into the top 15 which should help push down a defensemen or two.

I'd be fine with any of these:
Trade up for chych, joul, serg
Draft fabbro
Draft McLeod or someone else like him who drops
Draft rubtsov
So I'm pretty much open to anything. Don't reach for a d man.

He played both positions at UW. I think he'll be exclusively at pivot his sophmore year; his 2 way game just translates too well to not be a C.

I can see Detroit calling his number. Bad as the D may look, center depth looks even worse.

Brett Howden is a riser that seems very much like a player that Tyler Wright prefers.

Would not be surprised if the Wings had him ranked highly.

Larkin was ranked close to or exactly where we took him, though. Think the only "outlet" that had him lower than 15 was Button. Howden would be a big stretch at 16 if you ask me. I don't see him going inside of the top 20. Do think he's a Wright kind of pick though.

On that note, I'd be kind of bummed if we drafted him and didn't trade back to do so. I'm a little worried that Wright might have gotten a bit of an ego with the Larkin pick to the point where he might draft low ceiling/high floor for the near future. He seems to like a good all-around physical package, with either competitiveness or tenacity and moderate skill. Its a solid philosophy for an organization that doesn't draft high and has had a fairly predictable draft path but I think it could hurt down the road.

Sorry, was implying it would be a result of trading back with where he's ranked.

Just see him very much in the mold of guys we have taken recently.

Ahh, yeah, I can definitely see that. And I don't mind Howden as a pick, I just feel like he's more Riley Sheahan than Dylan Larkin, and we don't need more of that. I think the organization has a good stock of high-level mechanical players and even size for the near future up front. No need to overdo it. Not many teams win with the modern 2010s Bruins style. Although, depending on the trade-back pick, I certainly wouldn't mind. For example, if we traded back with Florida for 23 and 33, I don't think I'd mind (ironically) drafting a Howden there, as long as we took a D with the next two.
