Ahh, yeah, I can definitely see that. And I don't mind Howden as a pick, I just feel like he's more Riley Sheahan than Dylan Larkin, and we don't need more of that. I think the organization has a good stock of high-level mechanical players and even size for the near future up front. No need to overdo it. Not many teams win with the modern 2010s Bruins style. Although, depending on the trade-back pick, I certainly wouldn't mind. For example, if we traded back with Florida for 23 and 33, I don't think I'd mind (ironically) drafting a Howden there, as long as we took a D with the next two.

Actually kind of reminds me of a guy Wright picked in Columbus, in Boone Jenner.

But depends how it all shakes out. Originally liked him as an option in the 2nd round. I just want to walk out of this draft with 1 of our first 2 picks used on a defenseman I feel good about.

Thats so funny, cause when I typed out my description of what I think Tyler Wright likes, Jenner popped into my head...

...But Howden doesn't feel like a Jenner to me - he feels like a Sheahan (obviously not a Wright pick, just reminiscent). Maybe I'm off on my comparison to Howden (because, even ignoring goals/points, I would prefer a Jenner type to a Sheahan type in how they play the game), but if I'm looking at moderate/high floor, I'd value tenacity over competitiveness, and Howden seems more competitive/responsible than tenacious/emotional.

Still agree, though. Lots of defenseman post-lottery I like til about ~35/40. If we can get 1/2 or 2/3 (if we move back) on defense, I'll consider it a (tentative) win.

Seems unlikely Fabbro will be on the board, eh? Would this be one of those scenarios the Wings should trade up a handful of spots?

It's possible that he's available but if teams are looking for D's then we might be out of luck. And he definitely raised his stock at the U18s.

There's pretty much a consesus top-12 including: Matthews, Laine, Puljujärvi, Tkachuk, Dubois, Nylander, Chychrun, Sergachev, Juolevi, Keller, Jost & Brown.

After that we need to hope that at least 1 or more teams take a forward so we have a chance to get one of Fabbro, McAvoy or Bean. After those three the D options take a bit of a hit...

Larkin was ranked close to or exactly where we took him, though. Think the only "outlet" that had him lower than 15 was Button. Howden would be a big stretch at 16 if you ask me. I don't see him going inside of the top 20. Do think he's a Wright kind of pick though.

On that note, I'd be kind of bummed if we drafted him and didn't trade back to do so. I'm a little worried that Wright might have gotten a bit of an ego with the Larkin pick to the point where he might draft low ceiling/high floor for the near future. He seems to like a good all-around physical package, with either competitiveness or tenacity and moderate skill. Its a solid philosophy for an organization that doesn't draft high and has had a fairly predictable draft path but I think it could hurt down the road.

well he didn't last year

Fabbro is definitely my number one option of the three D for our range. I think Bean has the highest ceiling, but IMO Fabbro is not far behind. I think both Fabbro and McAvoy have a very high floor though. I would be very surprised if they're less than top 4 D.

Fabbro's so smart, poised and effective. McAvoy is slightly less so but I like that he has a bit of a mean streak. My ranking would be:

1) Fabbro who has top line potential with a top 4 floor as a steady smart guy who has excellent breakouts and can do PP and PK but will never quite excel in the offensive zone. He's also not overly physical but isn't exactly scared of contact either. ETA 2-3 seasons.

2) Bean: could be a star but also could bust. His offense is great with an excellent shot and PP QB ability. He's also very smart but the rest of his game needs work. ETA: 3-5 years.

3) McAvoy: who has excellent physical tools and is an excellent all arround defenseman. I see him as sure fire top 4 guy but I don't see the top line potential. His physicality would be welcome with the new philosophy this team is developing. ETA: 2-3 years.

I only rank Bean ahead of McAvoy because I think this team needs some high upside guys. If we already had a guy or two with top pairing potential I'd prefer McAvoy.

Hey Chad, do you have a list of Euro's you like for this draft? Always value your input there.

Also pretty crazy seeing McLeod not as a consensus top 12 prospect, guy was very highly regarded to start the year.

Jake Bean scares me, but his hockey IQ is supposed to be great so hopefully that makes up for some of his deficiencies.

I have a list but need to still filter through it one more time, will post it before the draft.

McLeod is in some top-12's but seems to be trending down big time. Lets hope one of the 13-15 teams picks him so we're guaranteed a D. He's still #3 on McKeen's list but I don't think they've updated it since the U18 WJC. I haven't seen much of Bean but the opinions on him sure seem to be divided.

for me...

If McAvoy and Fabbro are gone, and none of Jost/Keller/Brown fall out of the top 15, I would prefer to trade down and add a pick. I don't like Bean that much more than guys like Dineen/Clague who are in the next tier, and I also think Girard is going to end up going much higher than where he is being mocked. We will see.

I thought Fabbro looked awesome in a very professional way at the U18s. I also think he outplayed Chychrun for much of that tournament. I think his passing and decision making with the puck will allow him to progress pretty quickly through the post-draft ranks. I did notice, consistent with some scouting reports, that he does not like to rush the puck and does not seem to get up in the rush as much as he maybe could. I think that this is a function of being a great passer of the puck who makes quick decisions. It is much quicker to the pass the puck 20 ft than to skate it the same distance.

McAvoy is the more explosive skater of the two and is more dangerous is transition, but I don't think his passing or decision making with the puck is at the same level as Fabbro. I have a slight preference for Fabbro, but would be happy with McAvoy if Fabbro is off the board.

Carolina (#13), NJ (#11) and Minnesota (#15), will most likely go forward i believe

Think Fabbro would be a lot higher rated if he played in a CHL league. There is a definite bias against the BCHL and its not scouted as much. He's the kind of pick that if he excels is looked back on as amaxing scouting.

Same style as Elder playing basically beer league or Payrako playing high school (I think)

Ive wanted McAvoy all season but the past couple months I think Fabbro might just be the pick to go with.

Thing is Boston is drafting before Detroit and they need their Hamilton-replacement..And Chara is done next year.. so only reasonable pick is McAvoy or Bean
