I mean, what is location, really
Interesting quote:

Said one veteran scout who had viewed McAvoy five times on top of the world juniors: “The defencmen with top-pair upside here are Juolevi and Sergachev. Chychrun is at best a No. 3 defenceman [on a winning team] down the line. McAvoy might be a bit more of a wild card. The choice between Chychrun and McAvoy will come down to whether you like McAvoy’s hockey sense or Chychrun’s physical tools. Either way, if they’re not top-pair defencemen, then how do you spend a top ten pick on them?”

Hopefully that is a veteran scout for one of the teams ahead of us in the draft; if Chychrun falls within range, you take him. He has the talent, physically speaking he is an absolute monster, and he has the potential to develop into a very impressive player.
I suspect there's a little gamesmanship there, too. Could very well be from a team that actually wants Chychrun.

Not going to lie, I kind of want to snag Day if he's still around in the 4th.

As long as there isn't any glaringly obvious players remaining I think Day as Boom/Bust 4th round pick is fair. Although I do think that kid needs some professional mental help, he's had a rough go. Could just be having a hard time processing everything.

I bet he's gone by the end of the 2nd

Surprised to find Kunin at 5'11 and Rubstov 2 inches shorter then previously thought

Yeah, it seems some of the Euro's were maybe an inch higher on their listed height.

Girard came in at 5'9", but I still like the kid a lot. Think he has both the skill and skating to compensate.

Guess I didn't realize Allard was a legitimate 6'1". Not really sure why he's not projected higher.

Interesting that Fabbro and McAvoy are virtually the same exact size. Asplund is pretty small, if he drops to the middle of the 2nd I think that would be a textbook Red Wings pick.

I wouldn't mind drafting niemelainen. 6'6, is a very good skater, good defensively. Needs to add strength and work on his offense. Has a lot of offensive potential.

This mock has us taking Rubtsov in round 1, and Allard in round 2.

That would be pretty sweet, I guess.

Was just about to post this.

IMO if the draft shakes out like that I'd want the Wings to trade down a couple spots. Having the potential to pick up McAvoy and Fabbro is very exciting to me. Even if we could only add a early 2nd rounder it would be nice to pick up 1 of McAvoy or Fabbro (or Bean if your a fan) and snag Fox or Klauge in the early 2nd.

On a side note, I just realized Boston is going to be so stacked at D next year that I'm actually thinking it might hinder some players development. Hard to get the ice time and situations needed to learn when your top 4 is so talented.

That mock doesn't seem very close to consensus. Don't think there is any way Chychrun goes #4 imo. But if it played out like that I'd definitely be looking to trade back and add a pick. A lot of good options in the early twenties (Fabbro, Bellows, McAvoy, etc.).

I am not interested in him before the third round. Chl defensive defenseman don't put wind in my sails.

well he didn't last year

How didn't he do that last year? The only reason you might be saying otherwise on Svechnikov is because people perceive skill as being more flashy when the player is Russian, but he doesn't play like a typical Russian. He's big, feisty, versatile, and competitive. Is he skilled? Yes. He wouldn't have gone in the first round if there wasn't evident skill. But skill doesn't always translate. What does is size, attitude, and compete level. There's a reason Wright called him "the full package" from the get-go.

He didn't do that with Boone Jenner either, so no worries.

Unless we're saying he did it with Jenner, it worked, and then he did it again with Larkin? The man might be onto something, in that case.

I disagree. Both Jenner and Svechnikov are Wright picks in the way I'm talking about. They have no major physical flaws and they're competitive as hell while having a solid skill foundation. That's exactly what Larkin was. Jenner was a captain. Svechnkikov embraced the North American game. He clearly drafts guys that, if they're ultimately held back by their skill not translating, they can still contribute by being sparkplugs and/or leaders.

I'm curious to see what Wright does with a semi full slate of picks. I've like his first rounders, but I've been less enthused about his later round picks. So far only Homer & Saarijari have seemingly done anything from the later rounds, and even they have had less than spectacular seasons this year. So I'm curious what will happen now that he has really settled in as Director of Scouting. Plus he should have his 2nd this year, which is obviously where the Wings have taken a lot of their steals in the past.

As for this draft, I'd like to see them be D heavy, but with that said if they have a much higher ranked center at 16 then I want them to go BPA. Drafting need can really hurt you. You can always trade great young players, so I'd rather draft a forward if the dman are unimpressive.
