It'll be interesting if he plays in the WHL this year. He won't be buried behind other players, could have a huge year. This is gonna sound crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if he hit 100 pts.

I can see it, too, but with the forward core on that Prince George team, you'd think he'd already hit it by now. Still think he goes for his overage year and dominates. Think he'll get a shot somewhere.

The point remains, even if you want to cap our contracts at 48 they'd have ample room for Morrison if they thought he was worthy.

Yeah IDK about Ronning but the team obviously thinks there's something there. Fontaine I like better than the other two since his game should translate well to the pros even if the offense doesn't develop.

They have to try to put a good AHL team together so they will be signing some guys, also there might be someone they draft this June that will get an ELC right away or within the first year. You know Groton likes depth so plan to have another 23 man NHL roster as well. I'm just saying you don't want to not be able to sign a new guy because there's someone on the books you're just waiting for their two-way deals to expire, i.e. Chapie, Donnay. Prior years there were always a few totally dead slots, to me a dead slot is an echl'er who can barely play down there. Would much rather see Jolly get an ELC and part of the reason I think he hasn't is the team is cautious by handing out some bad two-way elc's lately. The prospect pool is so empty, they have to be able to go for it outside of their own picks.

I am with Matz03 on this. I believe the contract situation is one reason why they didn't offer Joly an NHL contract. I would have signed Joey before Morrison who just didn't show any growth in his game since he was drafted.

The Rangers currently have 19 forwards, not counting Tim Gettinger whose contract will slide, 13 defensemen (14 if Sean Day plays in Hartford next year) and 4 goalies under contract for next year getting you to 36-37 contracts. But the Rangers will sign RFAs Zibanijad, Fast and Lindberg and they will have to sign one of Pirri, Puempel or Glass because they need to expose two forwards who have played enough NHL gains in the expansion draft and they only have Grabner who qualifies. They also will be resigning Hartford forwards Beck and Jensen and very possibly Catennaci and defenseman Michael Paliotta. So we're looking at resigning 7-8 RFAs. The Rangers also are likely to sign a veteran goalie to play in Hartford to replace Helberg. Given that they will lose one player off the current roster before the NHL expansion draft they will have 43-45 contracts after the expansion draft.

The Rangers also are likely to want to sign some veteran free agents either as fourth liners or 7th defenseman or as veteran backups in Hartford.

And Matz03 is correct that the Rangers usually don't use all 50 contracts. In fact this year I think at one point they were as low as 47 contracts. In part this is because there was no one they wanted to sign and in part to leave some space open to trade for a player at the trade deadline as they did with Brendan Smith.

They have room to sign another prospect or two. But I wouldn't agree they have "plenty" of spaces for prospects getting an NHL contract unless they are successful in getting rid of some of the veteran defensemen. I expect they will sign some prospects to AHL contracts as they did with July and Oksanen.

I disagree, you want to keep two or three slots open for that unexpected euro or college UFA or even a trade bringing some guys on ELC's. I recall they traded Kampfer to the Panthers in '14 to open up a slot cause they were against the 50. They didn't want to lose Kampfer, he was a sweater to get rid of another contract. It's not great asset management to trade a guy you want to keep to get rid of another guys as well.

Not crazy. He has the talent to, but hasn't developed well since we drafted him.

He actually got pushed down the lineup instead.

Please avoid the CHL mid round picks. Jamie Benn might be the only player to make it as a mid round CHL player. Take a chance on a KHL guy or a college bound player. That will give them more time to evaluate the player. The KHL player rights are basically forever and the college player is under control for 3-4 years. The Rangers need to make a change with who makes the selections. Gordie Clark is no spring chicken.

Clark turned 65 a few days ago, not exactly old folks home, but he's been here for awhile, a fresh face might be a welcome change, and Gordie has some glaring weaknesses that we can't afford to happen again anytime soon. Unless he's pulling out Buch's and Dukes out of the 3rd round every year our future as a 'contender' is in serious doubt.

I think with Bobrov and Greeley getting more of a role, we'll see most likely see more Euros and college kids be picked up in the mid-rounds. There's been some good defenseman coming out of the USHL drafted in that range. Shane Gersich is another example of a forward that slipped to the 5th and is crushing it in college.

That would be fine by me. One of my fave young Dmen is Jaccob Slavin was a fourth rounder out of the ushl a few years back Going with some Europeans in this drafts mid round is a good idea too, some really underrated players.

Slavin is a #goodhockeyboy

But for real, the US development program focuses on size, speed, and a two-way game. Perfect for modern defensemen.

Day learning how to be mature about his mistakes is huge. I'd be happy to let Thompson coach him for another year.

I am really impressed with how Day has been dealing with the change of scenery. He has the talent and seems to be putting the pieces together. Very exciting stuff. He is still a long way from reaching the NHL, but it's nice to see the kid progress.

The USHL has been a very interesting source in recent years to scout. I mainly focused on the CHL for years and the NCAA, but with how US hockey has been steadily on the rise in recent years, the USHL shouldn't be ignored.

FWIW, was recruited to play D1 a while back, but decided to go a different route with my life!! ;)

37 contracts
One (at least) will slide until next year - 36
1 UFA likely (Smith) - 37
(Only) one of Glass/Puempel/Pirri will be resigned for ED purposes - 38
6 RFAs resigned (maximum IMO - FWIW Jensen likely winds up in Europe along with Hrivik) - 44
A new vet AHL backup keeper to replace Russia bound Hellberg - 45
45 contracts (MAXIMUM)

We will then also lose a player to Las Vegas - 44
2 more vets (likely fwds) will be needed for Hartford - 46
A reclamation project or two (should be some interesting names this year) 47/48
A long shot (Will Butcher maybe?) 48/49

Maybe they nullify the Strömwall contract?
But neither Joly nor Morrison were worthy of taking up contract space IMO
48-49 - There you have it - maybe 1-2 less
So there is in theory a little space left

Before the wheeling & dealing begins that is...

Just 2 things:

- John Gilmour is also on an entry level contract
- Some names are misspelled:

- Halvorsen -> Haverson
- Pedri -> Pedrie
- Leeson -> Leedahl

Thanks Bbkers for that full summary. I think two can slide in Day and Getttinger, I hope they don't try to rush Day. Chapie is missing. I wouldn't be against getting Joly and elc, he dominated echl, had really strong call up with Hartford before going down with injury, we don't have any current prospects with his skill set. Also regarding Morrison, he did get traded yesterday to Vancouver though not sure it matters anymore, he's no longer our prospect.
