Smith was an established NHL defenseman though. I suspect with a youngster he'd probably prefer keeping them on their "natural" side if possible.

And I don't think AV even liked using Smith on the right; I think it was more a matter of we had too many LHD and Smith needed to be in the lineup.

We'll see though.

it will be interesting.
I suspect the default expectation right now is
Bereglazov is ahead of Graves on the left,
Paliotta ahead of Pionk on the right,
but AV has said the plan for next year is to roll young D into the rotation

I believe both new acquisitions are ahead as of now. Bereglazov was basically given an NHL spot with the KHL out-clause. Pionk is the one of the top UDFA players out of college. Paliotta was signed after not given a QO. They brought up Kampfer before him. Right now, Kampfer has a spot over both IMO.

Paliotta was non-QO'd because CBJ had Cap crunch, couldn't afford his required QO$# calculated based on AAV of his ELC.

I may be in minority here, but i believe this kid will make it to having full seasons at NHL level. Perhaps not w NYR.
I saw him play with UVm
He didnt let his injury, or the failing swamp in Hartford, undermine his game last year.

It looks like we're officially about to lose the rights to Brad Morrison, with how shallow the prospect pool is I can understand not wasting a valuable ELC spot here. I had thought he could develop into something but not after the year he just had. I'd agree that a college or euro UFA might be a better place use a two way deal on, maybe small chance he'll come in on an AHl deal?

The Rangers have plenty of contract spots to sign prospects, but Morrison simply isn't worth one. He's the same player today that he was when he was drafted. Maybe he gets and AHL deal somewhere, or more likely starts in the ECHL. He could also go the CIS route. Anyway, not worth a spot in our organization.

They don't really have plenty of spots, they have a few RFA's and UFA's they'll need to sign and will probably end up at 47-48 again. They only have 2 that could slide if Gettinger and Day to back to juniors. Some guys in the AHL will also get NHL deals so it's crucial to keep a few open at all times to sign a guy they like that becomes available. So yes I agree no room to waste an NHL deal if you don't like the former draft pick's chances, it's smart to keep a few slots open at all times.

It's not like Morrison is a bad hockey player--it's more like he's not good enough. A couple years ago he was considered a really good sleeper pick. There was very good reason for thinking he would develop further. It just didn't happen. As a hockey player he still has options--I think he has an overage year and then there's always Canadian University hockey or he can land in the ECHL or Europe. He just doesn't look like he'll be an NHL player and I think the Rangers would be foolish to offer him a contract. Not everyone is going to work out.

We're losing someone to Las Vegas and there may be buyouts of Staal and/or Girardi. Klein I suspect will be moved along and I'd be surprised if either Pirri or Clendening (two RFA's) come back and I'm thinking that Skapski won't be re-signed either.

I count 37 guys under contract, Smith as the only UFA that will get a deal, and maybe six of the RFAs that will be retained. Plus something will happen with the expansion draft. We're in the low 40s before UFA season starts. There's plenty of room. Not even including a potential slide.

I would never keep more than one spot open. The only wasted contract spot is one that's left vacant. The team can always clear a spot with a minor deal if they need it. People overstate the significance of that 50-contract limit. So many times a deal goes down and you're like, oh, why would Team X also want Player Y? And they really don't, it's just Team Z clearing up a spot.

Need to figure out a way to trade Staal to squeeze Smith on the left and Shattenkirk on the right. Would need to buy out G and maybe give a second to someone willing to take Staal.

I disagree, you want to keep two or three slots open for that unexpected euro or college UFA or even a trade bringing some guys on ELC's. I recall they traded Kampfer to the Panthers in '14 to open up a slot cause they were against the 50. They didn't want to lose Kampfer, he was a sweater to get rid of another contract. It's not great asset management to trade a guy you want to keep to get rid of another guys as well.

I don't think Ronning or Fontaine are terribly more deserving of a contract than Morrison, but I don't think they were going to sign all of these fringe contract guys. Morrison seems to be the one they will choose to not sign.

The point remains, even if you want to cap our contracts at 48 they'd have ample room for Morrison if they thought he was worthy.

Yeah IDK about Ronning but the team obviously thinks there's something there. Fontaine I like better than the other two since his game should translate well to the pros even if the offense doesn't develop.

Guess it's official now. Bummer. Really liked his upside and finesse. Best of luck to him going further.

As for Ronning, NYR still has next year for him to develop something. He did fairly well in his ATO in Hartford so there's still some upside to a pro game. Not to mention all of the Blueshirts United interviews he's been in. Think they take a good hard look this coming season.

It'll be interesting if he plays in the WHL this year. He won't be buried behind other players, could have a huge year. This is gonna sound crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if he hit 100 pts.
