Prospect Info: 2015 NHL Draft - Pick #62 - Robin Kovacs

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
And that doesn't even count a guy like Fast or Duclair, Buchnevich, all who will very possibly play 100 games too.

And I'll add Dale Weise to that list.

Then add in guys like Zuuc, Talbot, Girardi or Hayes. The Rangers have developed a knack for building pretty solid rosters and prospect pools these last few years.

Rounds 3-7 results in the last 20 years. Players with more than 100 NHL games are considered success, agreed?

1995: Marc Savard, Dale Purinton
1997: Mike York, Mike Mottau (Johan Holmqvist has 99 games)
1998: Jason LaBarbera, Tomas Kloucek
2000: Dominic Moore, Henrik Lundqvist
2001: Garth Murray, Marek Zidlicky, Ryan Hollweg
2002: Petr Prucha
2003: Nigel Dawes
2004: Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan
2005: Tom Pyatt
2007: Carl Hagelin

It's not that uncommon to find NHL players in the later rounds.

That's about 1 to 1.5 players per draft after the first round, and many of them were garbage (Pyatt, Hollweg, Murray, Lab, Purinton, Holmqvist), had very short careers (Prucha, Dawes, Kloucek), were dime-a-dozen bottom-6ers (Moore, Mottau).

Savard, York, Lundqvist, Zidlicky, Dubi, Cally, Hags and Step are the only quality top-9 players we drafted in the 20 years from 1993 to 2012. That's an average of 2 players every 5 years.

I think you make valid points until you call Moore a dime a dozen bottom sixer. He's one of the best 4th line centers in the league. That was a home run pick.

Really looking forward to seeing him play in development camp.

For the Swedish posters, is there any chance he'll come over to the CHL? Seeing that he's a Free Agent and played last season in the Allsvenskan, what are your thoughts?

Drafted by North Bay (OHL) in todays import draft.

That's the former Brampton Battalion, for anyone not recognizing the team. Last prospect we had playing for that organization was Grachev.

frisland, do you know if Kovacs has given any indication as to whether he'd like to come play CHL hockey or prefers staying in Sweden, trying to make the SHL team?

others here have said he does not have a contract for next season, thats all i know. I sent Cerny a tweet, we'll see what he says.

Even though he doesn't have a contract, I highly doubt he comes over. There were rumors of him signing with Frolunda, but I mean we'll see.

Kovacs scored on a rebound in the scrimmage at prospect camp today per Rangers twitter

So, i've followed Kovacs alot and here is what i've got for you.

He is a high risk, high reward pick imo.

Great skills, bad attitude. He is great offensive, bad defensive. Is kinda selfish and does sometimes put the team in bad spots. Great hands, and great vision for scoring.

He is not physhical at all, but he is quite ugly on the ice. Alot of slashing when the ref looks away. He is not a hard working player at all, esp not when it comes to defence.

In my opinion the biggest issue with Kovacs is the mentality. If he can drop the bad attitude and work harder he has a very good chance of becomming a good NHL player.

A skilled 18 year old that needs an attitude adjustment. Not the worst problem to have. And just the kind of player you get when drafting outside the top two rounds.

For the record, I would have taken Dennis Yan at #62, Kovacs is not a bad pick here though.

Hey folks, just wondering if anyone has any idea what the chances might be of Robin playing in the OHL this coming season. I understand AIK is his home town team, but is he currently unsigned? The Battalion had a number of graduates this season (Nick Paul, Ryan Kujawinski, Nick Moutrey) in their top six and a big, skilled forward like Kovacs would be quite the coup in the second round of the Import draft.

Thanks.

Rumours saying he's going to play in the SHL with Frölunda

Even though the spots are open on North Bay, I think he's going to stay in Sweden. He is a free agent currently, but there are rumors of him moving to the SHL instead of the Allsvenskan to play for Frolunda. I would, however, keep an open mind on him. He seems like the type of guy that could surprise a lot in his decisions. He has said that he loves the Rangers organization a lot and I think whatever they think is best for him to do, he will do.

I don't agree with this fully. He is a pain in the ass to play against, don't get me wrong, but I think that's just his agitating ways to get under his oppositions skin. Could he do a little less agitating to help his team? Yes, but I think that if he learns the right type of agitating, he'll work wonders for NYR in the future. I think he's just a little immature and that'll grow out of him when working on his game.

Kovac has signed a 2-year deal with Rögle of the SHL, but he will be loaned back to his old team AIK in teh 2nd tier division this season.

Good for us, the 2nd tier league is a good league for a kid to play in. Filip Forsberg played there before going to Nashville for example.

Normally, the top 4-6 teams in that league is compareable to top tier division teams in Sweden and Finland, while the bottom 7-14 teams can be a bit so-so. So I think its a good league to play for a kid in, you get to play at a high level but also get a little easier opponents. This year its a bit special, because the SHL had an expansion so that 3 teams from the 2nd tier league where promoted, which means that maybe that league is a bit weaker than normal but I think it will be marginal. Kovac is in a real good spot with AIK. They struggled a ton last year, but he was their leading scorer and natrually is expected to have a bigger role this year as a 18 y/o. AIK is a Stockholm team with a tremendous fan base and extremely fanatic fans, but that has struggled in hockey due to financial reasons for a long time (Stockholm teams can't compete in hockey, they don't even remotely get the same support from their city as the other teams and they have a very complicated arena situation). So he will get a lot of attention and play with a fair amount of pressure on him, while being in a position he can do real well in (nobody will trash the homegrown 17-18 y/o kid when the team struggles).

Kovac turned down offer from Frölunda, Luleå and HV71 in the SHL so he was sought after. Going on a bit old info, I don't like Rögle. But they could be good for him, what do I know.

This is meaningless unless compared to how the rest of the league fared. That list also doesn't include 2nd rounders or prospects who ended up with enough value that we could trade them for something that is valued higher than their draft spot. It also doesn't include a trade like Werek for Lindberg where both were valued roughly the same but our scout team zeroed in on the better player. Werek still was valuable enough to land OL. Drafts are about a little more than just looking at if the player played for the franchise.

I posted in the prospects thread that I, too, thought it was strange that he signed with Rogle. But now knowing that he had multiple offers from solidified SHL teams, makes me scratch my head.

Why do you think it's odd Ola?

AIK wouldn't be bad for him in a higher role, but still would've thought that Frolunda was the best position for him (and even HV71 and Lulea).

JoeyBones- I just don't like how Rögle has been managed the last years. But to be honest I don't even know if the same people are in charge of not.

To put it like this, they have for a long time been a team that has a small but solid core and every year rotate in a good number of merchenaries. Since the core is so small they have a lot of money to throw around on short term deals on big names from other countries or Swedes moving around. If they get the right guys they do great if they don't they suck.

There are other teams that have a much better reputation for building a good team he proper way and knowing what they are doing. For Rögle the expression throwing spaghetti on the wall and see what sticks really seem to fit my take on them from afar. There are also teams who put pride into developing good young kids for like the "greater good" for Swedish hockey, knowing perfectly well that they are probably only getting a year or two out of a promising young Swede before he bolts. Rögle is definitely not in that cathegory either...

Interesting take, thanks for the detailed input?!! :)
