Prospect Info: 2015 NHL Draft - Pick #62 - Robin Kovacs

He was one of my favorite players in the draft, had him top-40ish. Great pick for you guys, I think you'll see him on the roster for 2016-17

2 goals in 50 games with Hartford, I think it's fair to say he should have been returned/loaned to Sweden for at least another year, maybe gather more SHL experience.

He's one guy I expected way more from considering he was actually playing in a man's league before coming over. I realize most youngsters will struggle in the pros initially, but it's hard to excuse 2 goals in 50 games no matter what the conditions might be

I blame most of it on how Gernander uses him and the system they play in Hartford, it doesn't fit Kovács style at all. He could do better himself but he isn't helped out by the coach and the system.

The Wolfpack sucks and needs an overhaul like yesterday

Fire the coach to start, and get some new blood in there. Need a new atmosphere. A winning AHL team/environment can be a huge development factor for some players

Kovacs i am not worried about. He is a young guy in the AHL, and still trying to figure it out. He seems to have the work ethic to make the changes necessary, so I except him to come back better next season

Hard to have a good AHL team when your cupboard is bare. If we had a first rounder or two floating around down there the situation might look better.

Or maybe even a few extra second rounders. Hartford is more or less bereft of talent. This is probably the worst that the Rangers farm system has been in 20 years. Not easy to field a winning farm team based on what is in the system.

An interesting note, Robin Kovacs was not not he Hartford Wolf Pack training camp roster. There are some rumblings that he may be in Sweden based on his Instagram account, but it is strange that he’s not with the Pack.

Looking to rebound from a poor year last season, Kovacs was one of the first players cut from camp this year. It’s a little alarming that he’s not in camp this year, and with no official word on where he is, it makes you wonder.

Per Zipay, Kovacs has been put on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract and returning to Sweden. LeBrun confirmed him being on waivers as well.

So, he's no longer Rangers property. I think we can lock this thread up...?

Thanks for the information. I did not know that. :)

On a side note I hope our mods do not lock it for a while. I feel former Rangers should be allowed to be discussed. I feel their threads will fall off naturally when Ranger fans do not find them relevant anymore. Another board I have posted on allows discussions of former players for up to a year after they are cut or traded. Usually their threads die off naturally soon after they are gone anyway.

Wow what? Why is he being given up on already? What a waste of a pick.
To be fair, we don't know how Kovacs has been behind the scenes after the racing incident in the summer. It could have messed him up mentally for all we know. He was a good pick at the time, had a good +1 draft year, and unfortunately got sucked into the abyss in Hartford last season. It's an unfortunate situation. He wasn't a waste of a pick like Nezjelcheb and Bernhardt were.

Maybe it's an attitude issue? Pure speculation on my part, but you don't see many teams cutting ties with a young player like this.
Probably has to do with the racing incident recently. Apparently he's a repeat offender, so that combined with underperformance... guess they decided it wasn't worth it.

I am not saying he was a bad selection for his spot taken at the time, i.e a bad pick. He literally is a waste of a pick in that he's gone from the organization and we don't get that pick or any other player back as any compensation. That was my only point.

We shouldn't have hurried on him though. He should have played in Sweden last year. Partly it was because we had so few real prospects and Hartford didn't have much depth. He wasn't ready and our timeline for him wasn't good.

Who knows what went on there. Maybe the player wanted to go home and not return to NA. The Rangers have always accommodated guys that wanted to be moved. If Kovacs is having a hard time personally and said he just wanted to stay in Sweden and had no NHL ambitions (I'm just saying this theoretically), then obviously it would behoove the Rangers to terminate his contract and get it off the books.

Hopefully everything is okay with Kovacs in his personal life. Good luck to him with whatever he ends up doing.
