Not really. They basically had to double Detroit's offer. Vogls report basically said the reason he is choosing Buffalo is because it's too much money to pass up. McKenzie said if he chooses Buffalo it will be because the offer is so huge.

You add that on to the fact that he is not a young player coach and you have to stand back and ask why is this the coach we chose? And not just chose but doubled the offer of the other team he was considering. Yes they really a) want him here and b) he's one of the best coaches in the game but why go to such extremes when he may not even be a great fit? Which is why I said that I trust Tim Murray here and hope that he knows something about Babcock that most don't. He obviously has a good feeling that Babcock can work with young players as well as other coaches. I remain skeptical and hope to be proven wrong.

Please don't take offense but what is your qualification to make the judgment on coaching and who fits. We are fans. There's probably a reason the decisions aren't left to us and left to those put in the positions to do so. That's why they get paid to do it.

I trust Tim Murray more than Darcy Regier but this reeks of just going after something to "win" at something regardless if it's the best fit for the team.

Lose two lotteries in a row? Better win this coaching lottery.

Lose out on every free agent out there year after year including Brad Richards? Better snatch up Leino.

In no way am I comparing Babcock to Leino as far as accomplishments but Leino was a complete miscast (partly thanks to Lindy Ruff's mysterious game footage from 2004 Finland where Leino played Center really well which Ville himself had no recollection of) but he was the best available forward at that point and we went all in for him just to say we won at something.

I have questioned if Babcock was the best guy for our team. His reputation scared me with all the young guys.

But after reading more about him I really started wanting him.

The clincher is Murray relationship. Murray knows him. He knows if it will work, because he obviously knows what doesn't.

Paying double is no big deal. We are paying off his wife to leave Motown.

Nothing official but Yerdon is making it seem like it's gonna happen on Twitter....alluding to maybe an announcement during the oilers presser

That's not what he said. He said it would be interesting IF it happened during the Oilers press conference.

We have no idea if Buffalo had to "double the amount Detroit was offering". What I read was Buffalo was in the neighborhood of 5 million a year and Detroit offered 3.25. Which isn't double or really all that close to double. Ultimately I have no problem if Murray and Pegula targeted Babcock and are willing to overpay for him. In fact I applude it. I have no idea what to make of the "not a young player coach" part, other than to say Detroit has had a number of young guys step in and play great hockey Nyqvist, Tatar, etc. Is he not a part of that? He's the best damn coach in the league he's not Ville ****ing Leino. Financially it has no implications on the roster we can put together. It's simply an owner opening his checkbook up to get the best damn coach available something this area has never seen and yet somehow people still find a way to crap all over it.

Don't get me wrong I wont hate signing Babcock. I'll be very, very happy. I just hope he is the right guy for the job. And if he's truly an elite coach (lol) he can adjust and be a great youth coach as well.

I'm actually very interested who his assistants would be and if he would be part of the AHL staff decision. You can hate on Toronto all you want but I think what they are doing is a great way to build a team. I think Shannahan is going to have them operating like Detroit and Tampa Bay in no time and I hope we are able to do the same.

They step in because of Blashill. Babcock even said that.

And way to misunderstand my Leino comment even though I outlined not to take it that way. We went after Leino regardless of him being a good fit or not because until Pegula was here we were never able to be in the running for a top tier free agent. That's what my fear with Babcock was. That he may not be a great fit for the team but we're one of the few teams that can afford him so we pursued him.

I don't really like the "Not good with young guys" label being thrown around with Babcock. The consensus is he is one of the best coaches in the game today. I'd like to think that one of the better coaches in the game is smart enough to realize the position his team is in and can adjust accordingly. Best coaches in all sports have the ability to coach with what they have and implement schemes and game plans designed for your roster. Just because Babs coached a certain way for 10 years with Detroit doesn't mean he can't adjust when circumstances change.

I thought he was already in contract talks and the Sabres have given an offer? I'm trying not to get my hopes up, yet.

I think the implication is that they are discussing final terms and/or negotiating. Yes the Sabres already made an offer. Now they are discussing final $$$ and term and maybe some of the other parts of a contract framework.
