So, I think we can say we're building around Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, McNabb. One of Schenn/Greene. One of Forbort/Gravel. Something to that effect.

I know it was controversial for a rental like Buff, but would you guys do something like Pearson, Forbort, 2017 1st for a longer term guy like Myers/Trouba/Shattenkirk etc.? I wouldn't even be opposed to moving a prospect like Kempe for a Shattenkirk type. Or McNabb, since theoretically the incoming guy would be taking a spot next to Muzzin or Martinez on the 2nd pairing.

I'd do Pearson/Forbort/1st for Shattenkirk in a heartbeat, but how much value do Pearson/Forbort have at this point?

I agree with other folks though, Kempe/Mersch should be "untouchable" as far as our prospects go. That's your future Toffoli/King all over again if they continue on their current development path.

If the price of moving Brown actually was Kempe, I would much sooner keep Kempe on his ELC and Brown on his terrible contract, than lose both.

but you would also likely be losing Lucic.
So it would be lose Brown and Kempe but keep Lucic and have some flexability long term.
Or
Lose Lucic but keep Brown and Kempe

It may come down to the type of deal Lucic would sign. If his deal just replaces Brown as a handcuff in a few years I agree it would not be worth it.

The first bolded portion is in no way a given and the second bolded portion is much more likely. Nor is it an impossibility that they can keep all 3.

Anyway, that's a different discussion altogether. My primary concern was discarding premiere talent on cheap contracts. They are our lifeblood.

I wonder if DL goes for someone like Josh Gorges. He could eat a few minutes, veteran, should be cheap. He was a free agent signing in 2002 by SJ (wasn't DL gm around that sort of time?) DL likes picking up veteran SAH Dmen.

Perhaps Brown for Gorges.

With Brown picking it up lately, moving him isn't going to happen. He's actually looked pretty damn good alongside Kopitar and Lucic, and allows us to ice a pretty deep lineup. I think he's as overpaid as anyone here, but if he can continue to produce his contract would change from terrible to just a poor one.

Gorges isn't a bad option, but he's German and we know how that goes :). The guy I would target is Liles. He's solid and underrated, and honestly a mid-rounder would get it done. Wouldn't surprise me to see it if Carolina fades in the short term.

Brown's looked great in the last couple of weeks but he was always a hot and cold player, right now he's hot but before that he was cold for more than a year. I love Brown but if there's some way to move that contract you gotta do it. Besides, the writing was on the wall for him as soon as they acquired Lucic.

I think you've just described 90% of the goal scorers in the league, not just Brown.

I feel the best thing they can do right NOW, is put Lecavalier on line 2, moving Carter to RW. The times Lecavalier has scored his 4 PP goals, he was out there with Carter and they looked good together...Vinny has scored 5 goals on 18 shots for a whopping 27.8%. Insane. Get him more scoring chances. And he will provide more scoring chances for Carter than TT and Pearson do...He was looking good with Gaborik, but Lewis wasn't doing much. Put Vinny with Pearson and Carter and the top 6 will be good.

Lucic Kopitar Tofolli
Pearson Lecavalier Carter.

Lucic playing well, Kopi just had his best game of year, hopefully TT gets going...and Pearson had a good game last night.

Third ctr can be Shore and 4th ctr can be Andreoff. Need the best top 6 they can ice out there. I don't think Mersch is quite ready and the top 6 above is probably the best they can ice out there. Gabby was coming on lately....sucks.

I think Pearson has good value. No reason to trade him. His game will come back. It's not like he's a liability or playing horribad. I think Gravel ends up being the better of the 2, between him and Forbort. Ii think Forbert has finally developed into an NHL defenseman, but will be a third paring guy. Gravel just looks sharper overall and has more upside...more than McNabb even.

Kempe / Mersch. I will just say this about skating ability alone: Kempe may already be the best skater in the organization now; Kings included... where Mersch is the worst skater I have seen in the NHL this year, bar none. Some shifts, I thought he was injured or something. Very awkward and poor mobility. He's great on the boards, down low, around the net and knws how to score goals and pay the price...hard to move. All great. But he does not make plays, really or can skate. They all say Luc couldn't skate, but was much better than Mersch and Luc could make plays and score anywhere within 40 feet of the net.

Mersch is 23 and may improve overall some...Kempe is 19 and some say the best player on team Sweden in the WJC and he's blowing away most everyone who has seen his progress and potential over the last year. He can play center or wing and is just way too valuable to move, period. He's about 6'3 200 and still growing and filling out. Can end up being Kopitar light and about Kopi's size....yet faster than Kopi. Would be a mistake to trade him. Mersch? I would trade him in the right deal.

The Kings won the Cup in 2014 with:

Gaborik - Kopitar - Brown
Pearson - Carter - Toffoli
King - Stoll - Williams

They sort of bunched the top 2 lines in 2012 as much as that team could, but Quick was also a brick wall.

I think Sutter would rather roll as many lines as possible that can do something. Load up when the situation calls for it, but someone on the 3rd line has to bring something to the table. Although Lecavalier doesn't exactly have a ton of ES goals or points. Shore/Brown/Lewis was also pretty good earlier in the year, other than actual goals being scored.

Doesn't matter who we're talking about, Kings scoring depth takes a hit with injury. We have a bunch of guys that are mostly 10-20 goal guys now which is good, but we've got nothing in the farm to replace them with beyond a couple.

Should call up Kempe and see if what he can do.

I have seen him live 20+ games this year and I don't think he is ready for the NHL yet. He has excellent raw tools (hard quick wrist shot, amazing skater, decent passer when playing well), but there is still a bit of kid in his game (tries too much one on one, some defensive lapses). Kempe has 1 goal in 15 AHL games since returning from the World Juniors Tournament. I think it would be a mistake at this point (too early).

One thing though, Kempe's game is very similar to Gaborik, with some Jeff Carter sprinkled in. He looks a 100% more comfortable on the wing than he does at Center.

I personally think Kempe should be kept down as long as possible to allow him to develop the scoring side of his game some more. It's definitely alright now but I'm not convinced it will translate to the next level yet. If he's up too soon I think he could be like Clifford, show promise early on but never grow into a real scorer at the NHL level. Remember Clifford was being compared to guys like Ryan Clowe at one point.

I wouldn't mind Kempe getting a game or two as a cup of coffee to get a taste, but I agree with the sentiment that he should be in the AHL all year.
