Stralman is the hockey equivalent of a long-reliver/7th inning guy in baseball.

While he performed a very admirable and difficult job, he's not irreplaceable.

The world won't end if Stralman gets 5/30 from some **** team.

Every week this fan base flips out over some player leaving or getting traded.

It's not 1957. These athletes don't live in our neighborhoods and they sure as **** don't have loyalty unless dollars precede it.

If Stralman walks, he walks. The Rangers can return the exact 18/2 from Game 1 of the SCF and lose in the first round in 2015.

We hear it all the time how the team will never recover from losing Dubinsky, AA, Prust (loved that one), Callahan, Jagr, Korpikoski blah blah blah.

Stralman is a good player. Better than expected. A nice surprise, like extra fries at the bottom of the bag under the napkins.

But life will go on. Sather created the best bottom two lines this franchise had in decades thanks to UFA signings.

Stralman will be replaced. He's not part of the core.

AGAIN, the quality of Klein's PARTNER is garbage... Not saying Staal carried Stralman this year, but I'd love to see the stats if Stralman was paired with John Moore all season/playoffs...

Have a look at this chart, which Shows Klein getting nearly the same offensive starts, which a slight decrease in performance...

with his partner, HAL GILL.... that should spell it all out for you, no?

So when Klein gets more defensive starts, his performance drops off a cliff? Noted.

If we're upgrading Pouliot, I'm doing it through FA (or not at all)

If I'm moving Staal, it's for a center or a high pick, nothing else

I dont think so at all. He's probably equivalent to an excellent #2 starter on a good team. A player who must be re-signed.

Someone asked about Stralman vs. Klein TOI numbers, and said they'd bet it was close.

It isn't close. At all. Even less so in the playoffs.

Regular Season:
- Stralman: 19:24
- Klein: 15:01

Playoffs:
- Stralman: 21:03
- Klein: 13:17

Klein is not going to successfully replace Stralman.

@CraigCustance: Can confirm that Kings won't be re-signing Willie Mitchell: "Unfortunately, no room." Was a huge part of that team.

So IF Staal gets traded, Mitchell can be a possible stopgap until Skjei is ready.

The stats say Stralman boosted Staal, not the other way around. The stats hate Klein regardless of his partner.

Since you asked, this is what happens to each teammate's possession numbers when on the ice with Stralman:

Too many stats these days. I'm going by my eyes. I like Stralman. He's improved over the last three seasons as a Ranger and was great value. If he's no longer of great value and actually, then I'm not upset if the bank isn't broken for him and there is some kind of plan B.

If stralman walks and Staal is resigned well be fine

depends on what fine is....

if we give him a long term deal and hes healthy- big if and his skating is there- so/so and he doesnt handle the puck like a live grenade- not confident here , then i tend to agree. if hes all those things, hes a top guyand worth his deal.

if he plays like he played for long stretches this season or hes concussed, then not so sure.

stralman has more game and is healthier, even though staal can be a shutdown type guy, i still prefer stralman. staal offers zero offensively and that, along with girardi and klein, makes our defense fairly unproductive and that leads us to being unable to create much offensively on a consistent basis.

with guys like skjei and mcilrath waiting for their turn, keeping a guy like stralman becomes even more important down the line. righty dmen who can play all zones are worth alot in todays nhl.

i would say, if we signed stralman to 4.5/5 and traded staal for a young centerman, well be more fine. :)

yoo every ranger fan knows how valuable richards was in the locker room this post season...would you deal JT Miller for Richards and a prospect, which ever team he goes too? Sather did say we are a cup contending team, richards at a reasonable amount would be great for our squad

Do you like Kreider? Because Evander Kane is a better version of Kreider.

I don't really see it. Kane has never overly impressed me. He's got great tools, but I think Kreider has a better attitude and head on his shoulders. Kane is more talented than Kreider, but I don't think he's ever going to put it all together.

I will never understand the love affair for him. He's got an attitude problem and a big contract, plus an injury history. No thanks. Especially for ANOTHER 1st.

Attitude problem? You mean he has a personality? 41 points in 63 games last year. That's on pace for 53 points. He is 22. He is the definition of a new age power forward with his shot, size and skating.

Staal + Conditonal 1st '16 (if he doesn't re-sign) for E. Kane

Lindberg wins the 3c spot. Face-offs, defensive prowess PKing ability. Very solid player.

Sign Stralman @ 4.4 for 6 years.
Sign D Moore 3 years @ 1.75 million

Noooooooooo

The last thing we need is another winger. If we're trading Staal at all, it's for a #1C, or for draft picks to clear cap space to sign a #1C (Stastny)

Excellent point. I especially loved your use of facts to defend your statement.

I am swayed. Great job

I don't need to repost the massive amount of statistics that have been evoked demonstrating how much Stralman is markedly better than Klein. The fact of the matter is Klein would not be a good replacement for Stralman. He's played less minutes against easier competition. He's been sheltered, and he STILL doesn't do as good as Stralman does.

The drop off between Woywitka/Eminger/Hamrlik and Klein during their respective Rangers tenure isn't that huge IMO compared to the significant dropback between Stralman and Klein.

The facts are all over the thread, and have been brought up time and time again. People choose to believe that Klein will just replace what Stralman has brought "because he has performed in that role in the past", disregarding the fact that he has never been nearly as effective as Stralman has been in that role for us.

I don't know about that. Kreider is only 4 months older, and he's going up against tougher competition while producing at a similar level.

If we're trading Staal and a 1st, it needs to be for a very good 1st/2nd line center.

Look, there is doubt Stralman is better... I never said Klein was better than stralman... Clearly, the stats say otherwise, but it's how much better everyone thinks he is... I'm not saying Klein is a world breaker, but he's still a very, very good defenseman.

When you factor in $, Klein is the better option, especially when we need more offense from the defense corps
