I think $2.3M for 2 years seems about right.

Would be tough to lose him with no replacement. That's a good chunk of cheap production gone.

Personally, I would feel a lot better penciling Fast into that spot than chalking up over 2M for Pouliot. Or take a flyer on another reclamation project UFA. Pouliot has been effective but he still scored 36 points in a career year, while not providing much in the defensive zone and while taking avoidable, brainless penalties.

I recognize the risk given how well that line worked. But Brass and especially Zucc stir the drink on that line. It is just a replaceable role in my book.

I like both Brassard and Pouilot (minus the dumb penalties), but it's Zucc that makes that line go... now if Pouilot is ok with taking around what he's making now.. by all means keep him.

I was thinking about that. Could work, although that's a very small line.

I wouldn't be married to any line combo from last year. None of them were unstoppable forces. Plus you never know when a kid might break through.

Interesting tidbit from Mirtle's latest article.

There could be some good news on another front for those teams, though.

Based purely on the NHL’s projected revenues of $3.7-billion this season, the salary cap will rise to roughly $69.5-million for next year – a noteworthy 8 per cent increase that is in line with what we’ve seen in the past.

What that doesn’t factor in, however, is the possibility that the NHL and players’ union negotiate to include the new Canadian television deal in the cap formula right away, a distinct possibility according to multiple sources last week.

“If a significant one-time increase or decrease to league-wide revenues is anticipated in the next league year,” the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement reads, “the parties will endeavor to estimate the expected increase or decrease and incorporate that estimate into” the cap calculation.

A decision on this front hasn’t been made yet, but it could have major implications for the cap. The Rogers deal is so substantial it could mean an increase of a few million dollars, which would result in the NHL’s biggest single-season jump ever.

The final cap number has to be in place by late June so negotiations need to happen on this fairly soon. This is one development worth keeping an eye on the next two weeks as it’ll impact everything from buyouts to free agency and trades.

Including JT in any deal would be a massive mistake.

He's 21 years old and was a ppg player in the AHL. If he played in 82 games this year he'd likely have been a 45-50 pt player.

Fans see that he was yo-yoed and immediately assume that the player isn't living up to the bill. He was drafted early to be a game changer. He has that ability.

Staal + JT would be a horrendous overpayment considering that JT could eventually become a 60 point player himself and they're also getting a defenseman who has the capability to play as a dominant as a #1.

I hope that if we got ROR that JT would be no where near that package.

By not re-signing Pouliot you certainly sacrifice quite a bit of size in the lineup. He took plenty of bone-headed penalties, but the lack of size was definitely an issue for this team in the final.

Staal only has one year left on his deal, and it definitely diminishes his overall value, considering he very well could be making an upwards of $5M-$6M per.

I love Miller more than most, but I'd be shocked if he were ever better than ROR.

Taking everything into consideration, Staal + Miller is pretty fair.

Swap Nash and MSL.

I'd put ROR between Kreider and Nash myself. That line performed quite well against top lines with Stepan as the center, and ROR is ever better defensively than Stepan is, and also nastier. Could slide Stepan with Hagelin and MSL and create a very dangerous second line that gets easier matchups.

Agreed. BEST case, Miller ends up equalling the production that ROR gives you right away. He'll never be the complete player that ROR already is.

Agreed. For a team that lacked size he certainly brought it. I would not be opposed to bringing him back, dependent on the price of course.

I think that Miller may have like a 5-10 pt ceiling lower than ROR. I don't think he'll be better.

But do I think he could consistently get 60-65 pts on a good year? Yes. I do.

I don't think that the extra 5-10 points that ROR will add will be worth trading Staal.

Kristo is fair game, to me, as a prospect... because a team like Colorado will likely be able to give him the games he needs that prevent him from becoming a FA in a year. McIlrath is fair game to me. But our top prospect to go along with a guy who will provide Colorado with the opportunity to resign a 2nd line center, and stabilize their young defensive corps for at least a year? I draw the line there.

Seems like a perfect fit to me. Colorado seems ready to take the next step. Staal helps there. It's not inconceivable that Staal wouldn't resign there either. People love playing there.

It should be noted that ROR is going to want ~$6M per on his upcoming deal, and swapping Staal + Miller for him makes it a tough squeeze to keep him, Stralman, and adequate depth.

Personally, I'd do everything possible to try and get Colorado to bite on Staal/Brassard, if only because it eases the pressure of the cap. Colorado has plenty of cap room.
