http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/future-watch-2016-the-nhls-top-10-rising-prospects/

"Feels like Christmas in the THN office. Future Watch, my personal favorite yearly edition of our magazine, hits newsstands any day now. I like to think of it as our prospect bible.

So how does it work? We start by consulting scouts from all 30 NHL franchises, who rank their organizations’ top 10 prospects who are not yet full-time NHLers, creating a pool of 300 players."

I think our scouts have seen our prospects play more than once, or what you think?

Kings top ten last year: 1. Kempe, 2. Shore, 3. Zykov (traded), 4. Forbort, 5. Auger, 6. C. Miller (traded), 7. Lintuniemi, 8. Gravel, 9. Lowry, 10. Mersch.

Auger was 5 last year as well? Hockey News is a rag these days, I'm not gonna trust what they say. Nice that they don't put a name on, means they can pull names out of hat and no one would the wiser (that might actually make a better list). Whoever they got doing this list is bad a judging hockey talent. Auger is a meh depth prospect, but he not top 10 by any means, even in a shallow pool like LA's. It's just a bad list.

The more I watch North Bay the more impressed I am with a couple of Amadio's teammates, Cam Dineen (rookie d-man) and Brett McKenzie. Thought they might be under the radar but likely not anymore--Dineen is leading the OHL in d-man scoring as a rookie (probably drafted 2nd-3rd round) and McKenzie didn't go drafted but nearly doubled his production this year and has attended Philly's camp, and he's a physical powerforward type, loves to use his size everywhere, prototypical KINg, looks like a 3rd liner. Dineen especially reminds me a bit of the good version of Hickey in junior's or a baby Duncan keith minus the explosiveness.

Amadio was the no-brainer signing but the Kings should certainly take note of some solid team-mates like Dineen, Santos, McKenzie and Smith.

A lot of those guys will be drafted before we can sniff them, particularly Dineen. IIRC one or two of them are already drafted no?

Nope. Smith and Santos are both undrafted and 20 years old already.
Dineen and McKenzie are eligible this year. (both their first year i believe.)

Only other drafted player on North Bay is Riley Bruce who is property of Calgary.

McKenzie could be a good pick for someone but likely before LA gets a shot like you said.

Isn't there a pretty good chance of Dineen slipping that far? Kings should pick around 50-60 and he was around 80 in the midseason rankings wasn't he?

He seems to be rising, lot of folks seem to have him late first early second, but he's still a bit of a wild card/unknown so there's a chance

Thank you. Can you explain the issue? I apologize.

Sorry, shoot, wow responding a month late to this.

It's hard to explain I think, but I just think teams are less involved with development in overseas players. Maybe Kubalik is not playing a game they would want him to play in NA, and they really do not have much of a say or consistent contact with him to guide him in a direction that may suit their style. This is all just theory, because I'm not on the inside thought process of things with Euro prospects. I just know that a lot go over to play in Europe and develop really really bad habits that are hard to break. For a guy who is a fringy seventh round player, that just may not seem like an effort worth investing time in. So Kubalik has an outstanding year, let's say the Kings do bring him over. He would be 21 at the start of the year, would be adjusting to the pro level, and re-adjusting to a smaller rink, on top of it being a more hard hitting and physical game in the A. You have to figure he would not have the trust of Stothers in the first year, so you are looking at probably age 22 by the time he gets going in the AHL. Give him a year, maybe two, maybe even three to put in the time and get familiar with the structure. He is now 24-25. Are you spending a contract spot on that? Or drafting a kid you can keep tabs on all year and have contact with much better and have him playing out of the CHL in two-three years ala Toffoli, Pearson, or Nolan? Maybe the Kings put in that time and he turns out to be..well not worth it. That would be a bummer right? I think that might be what goes into a process like that.

Prokhorkin is a different story, because the Kings from my knowledge, have made several attempts to get him over here but on all occasions they have been struck with difficulties stemming from his lack of desire to be in North America and play in the NHL/AHL. So, again, at some point I'm assuming development staffs weigh the cost/reward and either make a push or cut bait. I am certain if the Kings were that bent on keeping Kubalik here in North America they made it known when he originally left Kitchener to head back home.

Again, this is not from the mouth of someone who is inside the mind of a hockey ops guy, so take it for what it is worth.

High praise league wide! Great job by the Kings prospects. Kudos to Futa and staff.

That is impressive!

Sounds like Jacob Middleton is turning out to be a great, late round pick: round 7!
He's also captain of the Ottawa 67's. 6'3" 210 and a right shot.
Hope they sign him. It's his final year junior.

Amadio just scored his 50th goal tonight!

Been watching a lot of video on Matt Roy recently. Looks like a pretty decent player coming through the ranks here. Will be interested in his future seasons.

I don't know. I just don't know. :shakehead

Thanks for making that, though.

Schmalz is Killing me with that -56. I understand he's on a crap team team, but dang. Back to back seasons of -57 and -56 with his offense dropping quite a bit this year, yikes

Also, Dillon with an unimpressive season. Hopefully there is a decent FA goalie prospect they have their eye on.

Cernak had a rough year by the looks of it. While i stand by the statement that he should have made ontario over a guy like macdermid, the year learning na game at slower pace of chl maybe wasnt worst thing (albeit maybe the demotion contributed to his bad year idk). Hope he can start to refind his game somewhat next year on ontario (maybe erie but that doesnt seem like a great idea to me).

Yeah a few of those guys have just fallen on their faces, unfortunately

They'd better hit a home run with their second pick this summer. 2013 2nd-round pick Zykov is gone and (last year's top pick 2nd rounder) Cernak is promising but not a sure thing.

We've got, what, a 2nd round pick, a 4th round pick, a conditional 5th and conditional 7th, right?

Good to see Amadio get a goal in their PO opener, shorthanded no less. From the highlights it appears he had a lot of good looks.

Watson with a goal and a helper as well. Mistele with a goal, Marchment with 2A.

At least the youth is staying solid in the playoffs.
