Good to hear Cernak is settling in well to the system. Probably better competition than he expected.

Not interested in the Tinder guy.

Thank you for the update, EON. I'm not worried about Cernak. The points will come.

Marchment's progress is going well. Hopefully he's matured since his suspension last year.

Goal and assist from Cernak tonight (told you not to worry about the lack of points ;)) . Continues to improve as he adjusts to the North American game.

Are the points really such important by this guy?

Players that don't score in junior pretty much don't play in NHL. Even if he projects more as a defensive guy at the NHL level, at the CHL level he should be so good he gets the points. It's very rare that a player that does not score at junior level becomes an NHL level player.

Bob McKenzie really did a preview of who might be on Team Canada for the upcoming World Juniors. Looks like Spencer Watson has a strong chance of being on the team, perhaps even as the top natural RWer.

A trio of 19-year-olds – Los Angeles King prospect Spencer Watson of the Kingston Frontenacs (5-foot-9, 170 pounds); Florida second-rounder Jayce Hawryluk of the Brandon Wheat Kings (5-foot-10, 197 pounds); and, Philadelphia second-rounder Nicolas Aube-Kubel (5-foot-11, 196 pounds) of the Val d’Or Foreurs will compete for spots on the right side.

For Kings at WJC it'll look something like this.

Locks (all returning players)
Sweden - LW/C Adrian Kempe
Slovakia - D Erik Cernak
Russia - C Alexander Dergachyov

Prossible
Canada - RW Spencer Watson

That's about it, Canadian C Michael Amadio is probably the only other one with an outside shot. Ex-Kings prospect D Roland McKeown looks likely to make Canada on the blueline.

He should be on that team. Only reason he isn't is because he is playing on a pretty blue-collar forward group in North Bay. If he played on any team with a legit high-round scoring forward he would have close to 100 points. He's a real solid player flying way under the radar in the O.

Cernak logged a ton of ice time this weekend and looked pretty solid. Up to 4 points in 9 games now. Very steadying presence back there.

Would like to see Cernak's production increase as he gets more comfortable. .5 PPG is okay, but he really should be pretty dominant at that level, especially with his minutes and partner.

Not that I expect him to be extremely offensively proficient in the pros, just referencing what Holden points out about defensemen scoring in juniors.

I wouldn't worry TOO much about it. While you and Holden are right about production, he is playing in a foreign country, new league, new family, and a slew of other things which is overwhelming for anyone, let alone an 18 year-old.

The production is nice, but .5 ppg is still pretty darn good.

Oh, I know it's a little early for any worry there and that's why I used the disclaimer "as he gets comfortable" too. And, as you say, it's not like .5 PPG is bad especially through all that. I just would really like to see, as he learns the game here, him really start taking over.

One thing to note is that he is paired with Travis Dermott most of the time. While that forms probably the best D pairing in the league, Dermott is a very good offensive dman as well. So there won't be as many opportunities for Cernak to chip in points as there would be if he was playing with a more stay at home type dman.

Still I do agree I expect his PPG to rise a bit more, hopefully up to somewhere around 0.75.

Spencer Watson scored again in a 2-1 win over Russia (for the OHL)
Is this guy a late steal - what are peoples views re his chances of making the NHL as a regular ? Possibly another Toffolli or likely another Kozun,Weal etc ?

Spencer Watson

Wouldnt call him a steal, as he had good numbers in his draft year as well.

He's pretty small and I am sure there are other arguments to be made.

He hasn't made it to the NHL and I still think he's a longshot. As Frolov points out, the numbers have always been there for him, it's been size/strength and, more importantly, the lack of being truly elusive like Gaudreau/Johnson. There's a reason he fell to 209th, rather than just the 4th/5th round even.

However, if he were to make it, I'd call it a steal, because he's a 7th round pick that would have to be in a scoring role to make it, he's not Jordan Nolan.

Not even close to Toffoli skill level.

People seriously don't understand how talented Toffoli is at scoring. Had it not been for Toffoli's poor skating in Jr's, Toffoli would have been a top 15 pick.

Michael Amadio is seriously underrated, the kid is just a gritty hockey player.

Michael Amadio put on his Team OHL jersey tonight in Windsor for Game 4 of the Canada vs Russia Subway Series.

The Battalion forward wasn’t able to score at the torrid pace he did Sunday against Barrie, where he netted a career high 6 point game, but instead the Sault Ste. Marie product showed off his 200-foot game and his value as a key penalty killer.

Amadio, wearing his number 18, was slotted on a line with Brendan Perlini, who has roots in Sault Ste. Marie as well, and Flint Firebirds forward Will Bitten.

The Battalion forward had a good late first period rush as he got a quick shot away near the slot but it went wide as Team OHL trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Amadio’s best chance came on a shorthanded 2 on 1 in the third period, where Amadio broke out of the OHL zone and fed the Fronts Lawson Crouse who was robbed by the Russian netminder Alexander Trushkov.

With the net empty and a late penalty on Pete’s forward Eric Cornel, Team OHL called on Amadio and Crouse to be on the ice in the final minute during 6 on 4 action with the Russian net empty.

Amadio won a defensive zone face-off with 14 seconds remaining and sent the puck down the ice to secure the 2-1 win.

Sarnia Sting forward Jordan Kyrou and Kingston’s Spencer Watson did the scoring for Team OHL which secured the Canada/Russia Subway Series victory for the CHL as Team OHL won the fourth straight game with two more games left as the Russians head East to face Team QMJHL.

Amadio will return to put on his North Bay Battalion jesrey as the Troops prepare for a visit from his OHL All-Star teammates’ Spencer Watson and Lawson Crouse’s Kingston Frontenacs.

That game will mark the debut for one of the Battalion’s OHL All-Star Canada-Russia Series players from last year, as Kyle Wood will return to the lineup on Thursday night.

I'm not sure I'd call him a steal. Jordan Weal had much better numbers in juniors (doubling the 2nd highest scorer on his team in a tighter checking league at the time).

I like Watson, don't get me wrong, but he's still very much a longshot.

I like the kid and I'm pulling for him. Maybe he can be part of a trade package later for let's say, a goalie prospect. ;) He has no future with the Kings but maybe he'll have a chance with another team. But being a small scorer is very tough. Kozun had just a brief cup with the Leafs, O'Neill is not making much of an impression with the Devils, and Weal is not being played. It's hard to translate their game to the NHL level when they're small.
