Works for me. I doubt Edmonton would do it. They still think Paajarvi has super high value.

I think Nichuskin will be there at #7

This reasoning (in terms of Paajarvi) is why he Oilers are picking at or near the top of the draft every year, and haven't made the playoffs since they went to the Cup final in 2006 against Carolina. It's probably why they now have a new General Manager.

MacT commented that he wanted a center at the #7 spot.

He says from July 1 to July 5 there is a recruitment window for pending UFA's. Also says his priority is A centre with 7 overall pick.

Colin Priestner ‏@colinpriestner 30m
Lists McKinnon, Barkov and Monahan as the 3 centres he wants. He's had many talks about moving up OR down with fellow GMs

He is possibly waiting for Monahan to drop to him or trading the pick for an established centerman. Makes sense, since Sam Gagner is not that good.

Edmonton and the New York Rangers could not have more different philosophies on how to build a team. For the last decade, the Rangers have tried to build from the net out. For Edmonton, it's been building through adding offense and even more offense.

Edmonton will need to trade up if they want any of the centers listed above. If they keep their #7, they're best off drafting Reijo's kid, but they seem to have an aversion towards drafting defense in the 1st round.

Especially for Hrivik, concerning the NHL you have to think it's make or break next season. He has the outlook of signing with Slovan or some other KHL club for good money if he doens't make it, though.

Fasth I've been advocating for some time, but at this point I see OL as the more NHL ready due to his style. I'd like to see Fasth handling the AHL first. I think, with the play OL showed during the SEL POs and the WC, that he is ready for a bottom 6 role. Not as high of a ceiling than Fasth, however. I'm curios about what Glen and Co will do.

I think we have to buy out Richards for the cap space. Then let's see what the kids we have can do. Hopefully Kreider can take a step with a new coach. Other than that, we have Lindberg, Fast, Thomas, Miller, Hrivik who may be ready to contribute as early as next year. I'd sign a guy like Omark for a 1-2 year deal and see if he can produce on the 2/3 line depending on chemistry. You re-sign the core (Steps, McD, Hags) and show Hank you're serious. Also, tell him what the plans for the following year are.

My guess is that one of Malkin or Letang hits the open market and if they do, you throw the bank at them. Then you can move people if needed.

You can either ice a top 6 of: Kreider-Malkin-Nash, Hags-Step-Cally or a top 4 defense of McD-Letang, Staal-Girardi.

then expect to be disappointed.

New players, new coach, new system contending is pretty much out of the question.

Why?

The top two lines are set. The Defense is pretty much set. The Goalie gives the team a chance to win every game. How can you think that team isn't a contender, after making it to the ECF last year, after the 2nd round this year? (with awful special teams)

So, what new players are going to hold the team back? Why can't the team learn a new system? Are these stupid players? Are the core players over the hill?

Contending is "pretty much" out of the question? That's just amazing to actually see in writing. The Rangers aren't void of talent. This isn't 2002-2003, we haven't turned the clock back. They are a contender going into next season with the right coach and improvements on special teams. If the Rangers played the exact same system and had dominant special teams they aren't just a contender they might win the Stanley Cup. I'm not even going out on a limb saying that. Will it all come together? Who knows, but it's June 1st and we are already writing off next season, before a coach is named, before any trades are made, before free agency, before training camp, before pre-season games, before the season starts and lineup adjustments are made, before everything involved.....I don't know if I want to laugh or cry...

yeah, pretty much agree....a great PP/PK can offset so many issues...and we're actually a pretty good E.S. team...one of the better ones in the league. our PP/PK lost us a ton of games during the regular season, and even more in the playoffs.

Fillpula, Bickell, Torres and Horton

I want 2 of them. 2 years MAX (except Bickell) and if Horton asks for over 5 he can walk.

Give this team some skill, and some sandpaper.

The PK in the regular season and Caps series was pretty decent. We really **** the bed against the Bruins though.

You can never write off future results when playoffs are still going on in June. Did anyone see the Islanders making the playoffs this year? I'll toot my own horn once and say I did, but not many others did.

The defense is pretty much set. The top 6 is pretty much set as mentioned. There will be a mix of kids and vets competing for the 3rd and 4th line spots. A trade or two should be made for a top 6 winger or very high end scoring prospect, but I don't see much more turnover from last season. Let the new coach put his own print on the team. It might not be the popular opinion, but we do have the pieces to contend now. When you have the best goalie in the world in net, you always have a chance to go deep.

would rather Bickell/Horton. Sandpaper. We need less passive players.

Same here. Cup winning champions don't always have star power, but are usually very deep teams with guys like the two mentioned above. They are great players to have when making a run. Players like that ignite a team and are awesome spark plugs to motivate the boys. Rangers have none of that outside of Clowe, who did some of that in game 4 against Washington when he played.

We need to get bigger and faster, there are no two ways around it.

Pretty much. Which is why also I've been saying to offer clowe a shorter cheaper deal and see. And then see what we can do to bring in some others. We need these guys to contend. No two ways about it. Need some sort of fire, sparkplug as you say

Nash was pretty much star level during the regular season. He's gotta learn how to get it done in the playoffs. The teams that win without star power need insane depth/balance. We have all the hard parts to get, essentially, it's not like we're lightyears away from a legit cup roster.

Depth, depth, depth it's all about finding depth and value.

As for Ryder, I've never been a fan of his because he just doesn't seem involved if he's not scoring, but at $2.8 to $3 million for two years, does that make sense? He might be able to help the PP. I'm just worried about him becoming Kotalik 2.0 in NY if he losses his scoring touch because like Kotalik if he's not scoring, what else does he bring to the table?

I feel like signing Malkin is a pipe dream, within a pipe dream. We shall see.
