I would personally sign Ryder or Horton, and then sign Weiss to a cheap 2 year deal.

Improve the offense a bit, we can't bank on Malkin making it to free agency in 2014 (good chance the Pens sign him before then), and even if he does it's no sure thing he even comes here.

Yes. We need to bolster the 2nd-ary scoring and mid 6, get a nice left wing and replace some bottom 6. I'd prefer Horton but he's gonna command more money. Ryder is a possibility. I think Weiss would want some more money though, maybe a few more years as well.

Do not count on Malkin going anywhere. That's the wrong mentality if you want to build a team to win.

Horton scares me cause of his injury history, but the guy always scores close to 30 goals, and he would be a good fit here.

I would offer him 4-5 years at around 4.5-5 mil and see if he'd take that.

Also, it's most likely inevitable that we buyout Richards.

If Horton is open to a reasonable deal, I'd sign him in a second. Take away Boston's near monopoly on huge players who can score and get one of them for NYR at the same time.

I'm all for Weiss because I really don't believe he'll be too overpaid. He's coming off an injury prone season and he's not getting any younger. Gives us legitimate depth at C with a combo of Stepan/Weiss/Brassard as the top 3 which are all pretty much interchangeable depending on opposing team and/or current play. We need a more offense-oriented C for the top 3 lines and Weiss is not a game breaker but he fits the bill if he can be had on a reasonable deal. Of course this is all dependent on buying out Richards; as bad as he was last season I really think he'll rebound and be productive again but with his contract and the new CBA we just CANNOT risk him getting injured. Buyout NEEDS to happen..

Horton is going to get paid.

Malkin is going to get paid.

Both have injury histories and would be extremely high risk signings and it just keeps repeating the same mistakes we keep making.

We need to make signings that make SENSE, not just big names.

If the Rangers buy out Richards only to give any sort of significant deal to Weiss...

I will just bury my head in my hands and laugh.

Hopefully they have already internally discussed trading Del Zotto for a young center. We need one moving forward. Richards has to be bought out. But after that we would be looking at Boyle as our #3 center, if we hope to contend that can't happen.

Will Lindberg or Miller be ready to take the #3 spot? Is a question they need to ask themselves. If the answer is no, they have some limited options, trade Del Zotto or go into free agency.

what about Matt Cullen for third line center? He's not going to put up 50-60 points like Weiss, Bozak, or Ribeiro but he'd be a solid option for the position. Would sign a short deal, good in shootouts, good on PK, good on PP, gets 35-40 points a year. Anyone?

Honestly I've become adamantly against going after names in free agency, but it's Evgeni freakin' Malkin. Guy has a Hart Trophy, a Conn Smythe, an Art Ross Trophy, three time 100+ point seasons. One 50 goal season.

If he were a free agent, I would almost be surprised if he weren't a Ranger. Sather would lose it. And rightfully so.

I really hope he doesn't re-sign with Pittsburgh. Even if he doesn't go to the Rangers.

It be exciting to watch him be the guy on a new team.

We also need an offensive defenseman/PP QB. If they still think MDZ can be that player, then they aren't going to trade him. Besides, we just traded for Brassard. Even if they buyout Richards, I don't see them making center a high priority this summer.

Then with Stepan/Brass as the 2-3s...my god...

Sather would offer him something insane, like $150m over 15 years.

I had a long discussing about the term transition year. I argued that this past season cannot be considered a transition year based on the moves that were made before and during the season. This was a year that we intended on competing for the cup and for all the BS that happened, getting to the 2nd round was nice.

That said, this season coming up IS a transition year. We do not have the players in house that are good enough at the positions they play (a few exceptions) to be considered a WIN NOW team.

With a new coach and MORE roster turnover, making the PO's next year and winning a round should be considered a successful season.

The Eye injury to Staal has me very concerned about the player he will be when he's fully comfortable playing with limited vision. If the vision impairment is non-reversable, Staal WILL be a different player. Not the most ideal situation, but I would seriously consider moving him and if Carolina provides the best return for a player that is potentially damaged (good odds on that) then by all means do it. If we can get Tlusty, Murphy and the #5 this year then we HAVE to make that trade. If we can come away from a trade of Staal with Murphy and Barkov or Nichushkin it's a deal you have to make. The eye issue for Staal is going to drive his availability. Again, not a desired direction, but a limited Staal doesn't really help the cause.

I am on the fence on buying Richards out this summer. I understand the logic behind not waiting and doing it now so that we are more than comfortable should both McD and Stepan get poached with Offer-Sheets, However, both players have good roles here in NY. Both players are going to get paid here or anywhere else. The only reason to sign an offer-sheet is if you feel you are not getting a fair shake and want to leave. I thinkt hat Sather has been very fair with all the players here in NY Be that RFA or UFA.

One reason I may not want to buy Richards out is the thought that is running through my head that this guy was embarrassed this past season and PO's. He stunk up the joint all season (still posted respectable numbers) He got benched for two straight elimination games. That's a hit to the pride for ANY player. I would expect to see Brad Richards in excellent condition come training camp. The thought of benefitting from that has me very intrigured. However the 4 straight seasons fo declining production scream buyout.

Going to be a very interesting and short summer for the Rangers and their fans. Lots happening so the time will fly by.

Girardi-Stralman-Moore. One of those guys isn't a RD. And injuries are GOING to happen.

There's a difference between being a RD and a right handed D. You do not need three left handers and three right handers. MDZ has played right D and I'm sure Moore could as well. We have McIlrath waiting in the wings and we could easily sign a 7th D. But we do not NEED a defenseman at this time unless we learn that Staal is not going to be able to go.

Many of us expect either Staal or MDZ to get moved this summer.

I think we can all expect Eminger to be resigned again this summer as a #7. He's done a really admirable job I think here. Frankly a perfect #7.

If that happens we have a hole to fill. Until then we need some help up front,

Even if players did nothing with possession of the puck like they do in your extremely polarized version of reality, it's still time that the opposition is not scoring.

You're right. All the best teams strive to possess the puck for no other reason than keeping the puck out of their own net. That's how Torts looks at things and he's gone. I think you'll find that the next regime will put a premium on constructive puck possession (the kind that creates scoring chances and not just lame shots from the boards which you seem to value). And then players who are incapable of making things happen at least some of the time will be moved or benched. And their relative Corsi will not be able to save them from being exposed for the subpar hockey players that they are. That's a predictable reality based on where we've just been.

I can't wait for all that to play out.

You sit on some cap space or filter it into a one year deal for an older player. Whatever is left. Then, you make a run at Malkin next year. I'd be willing to let Callahan, Girardi go to free agency if it meant getting Geno under contract. Notably, that wouldn't necessarily be required, but its a possibility. It's also a possibility that Malkin re-ups next year.

But when is the last time a player of his ability tested the free agent market? Kovalchuk and Hossa are the closest I can think of, and both of their contracts were adjusted under the old flawed CBA. Malkin could get something like 10 years 100 million.

With the new agreement, isn't the maximum a player can sign for only 7 years?

Other teams may be at an advantage on Malkin versus us, because Pittsburgh may be willing to do a sign and trade to give Malkin that 8th year if they realize he's going to go elsewhere. They won't do that with us.
