Karlsson definitely doesn't bring any hitting but he's been extremely durable the last 2+ years while putting up nearly .9 points per game. Hasn't missed a game at all IIRC.
His even strength production would be just as important as the PP help.

I think you pair him with Forsling and chip a minute off both their current totals.
Use that pairing in more NZ and OZ setups.
Use Mikkola and Ekblad as your NZ and DZ duo
Kulikov and Schmidt would.be a decent 3rd pair.

Karlsson would have to come in around $6 to 7 million to make sense.
I think his defense would be nullified by Forsling and pairing him with Barkovs line or Lundells as well.

2026-27

Verhaeghe (7) - McDavid (16) - Reinhart (8.625)
Tkachuk (9.5) - Barkov (10) - Bennett (6.25)
Luostarinen (4.5) - Lundell - (5) - Samoskevich (2.5)
Sourdif (1)- Boqvist (2.5) - Devine (975k)
~74 mil

Forsling (5.75) - Ekblad (6.5)
Mikkola (4) - Benning (1.25)
Kulikov (1.15) - xxxx

Knight (5.75)
xxxx

= around 98.5 million, leaving 5.5 million to fill some depth on D and 2a backup or promote one of our G prospects ?
I’d much rather get Eichel. Will cost less, I much prefer his personality, and his story fits our locker room and franchise. He also won’t completely eclipse Captain Barkov the way McMeme would.

I think we could use Karlsson.

But I also think he would be a 3rd pairing guy. He would be like Yandle. Which then is also my concern. Our Karlsson was Montour. The thing with Montour is he had some physicality to him. Does EK have that?
I just feel like he's too expensive...

Karlsson is perfect for us. Not sure how you get the cost down, or if its worth for seasons beyond this one. But from a pure skillset point of view its a no brainer.

You dont win cups with Karlsson type playing on your D
Why do you think so? Well, you probably consider winning the cups with having a fun high-event offensive defenseman is too good to be true, but...

Those numbers for Montour are greatly inflated by 2 years ago. He is not in the same class as the other two guys.

We won the cup with him a shell offensively compared to his previous season.

We just need a solid #4 IMO. Schmidt and Kuli would be great as the bottom pairing.

Balinskis cannot play a regular role in the playoffs if we expect to go deep again this season.

Hi guys. Brand new here, first post. Tried to read through the entire thread before weighing in. In our search for a RHD, my thoughts:

Karlsson too expensive, Pitt reportedly wants to retain ZERO salary. That's their public position of course, they might be willing to eat some but not enough IMO to make him palatable. I don't see him fitting into PM's system too well but OEL made a jump defensively so anything's possible.

That would make us older too. My in-a-perfect-world goals for this trade deadline would be to fill needs with controllable players and get younger (extend that Cup window, baby).

Dobson and Jokiharju are favorites, for sure. They wouldn't be terribly expensive and would leave room for other moves. Maybe someone like Justin Brazeau.

I like Jake Evans but if Benny is going to walk I like Trent Frederic a whole lot more, we can get him in the offseason for only money.

I am warming up on Jokiharju

Montour was not some offensive dynamo last season, and I don't think we HAVE to have one on the backend, this could be a cheaper younger option.
I don't see what he does, the problem right now is Kulikov is in the 4 (and that's me saying that), Jokiharju is worse than Kuli so he's taking Balinskis' spot which is fine but doesn't solve the main issue. Ideally you'd like an offensive first dman to pair with Mikkola to bump Kuli back down to 5 and scratch Balinskis.

edit-to clarify, I'm fine with trading for a 3rd pairing guy and scratching Balinskis, that would be the easier and more likely thing to get done considering Florida's lack of assets, but if they could swing for an offensive top 4 guy to bump Kuli back that would be ideal.

Looking for a available RHD in a top 4 role, Ekblad has taken over Montours spot and production from last season we need just a solid piece back there and we could do worse than Jokiharju for sure. He is a plus player on the Sabres, he could fill that role IMO.

He would play above Kuli without a doubt.

Welcome!

Dobson would be expensive imo. Maybe Marino if Utah wants assets

Montour was playing fine even in offensively down year. My point is that some hockey fans are just biased against offensive defensemen in general.

He did play fine, I just don't see the need for a high end defensive abomination like EK65 just because Monty is gone. It doesn't have to be that type of defender, I would be happy with any serviceable top 4 option.

It doesn't need to be Karlsson. I'm just not amazed with a lot of names throwed there. They are certainly not more likely to make the team closer to another Cup than EK65.

I think Dobson would cost a lot.
Like Lundell or a touch more, depending on Dobsons next contract length/value.
