2013 NHL Draft - Pick #80 - Anthony Duclair - Signs ELC with NYR - 1/2/14

Nice to have him officially in the fold. Is this a case of waiting for calendar year 2014 to sign him for some reason?

What's Buchnevich's status under the new CBA? How early can they sign him and what happens to the contract given that he's got another year plus on his deal in the KHL?

Calendar year should have nothing to do with it, since the contract would be sliding anyway.

As far a Buch goes, I'm not sure. I know he has a KHL contract for this season and next. Is he allowed to sign an ELC while still under contract in the KHL?
 
Also, to add onto an earlier post, I think the Rangers as an organization want their drafted players to "earn" their contract. We're far enough into the QMJHL season to say that DuClair has definitely progressed from his draft year, and I think that's what the organization looks for.

McColgan, conversely, didn't ever improve very much from his draft year, and was therefore not extended a contract offer.

Just my 2 cents.
 
The Rangers are absolutely ecstatic with Duclair's progress. He was projected to go late 1st early second after his rookie season in the Q. Then his development completely stalled last season. I spent some time with him at training camp and the Rangers were working with him on diet and strength training, as well as some positional issues. He really took to the instruction--it almost was like he hungered for it. He loved being in New York and left excited. I think that he needed some TLC and folks believing in him. His development this season is at least in part the result. The team is rewarding Duclair for his work this season, which feeds right into the attention he needs to develop properly.

Expect Duclair to get a look in camp next fall. He will almost certainly be ready for the AHL, but its not an option. I would be surprised if he sticks in New York, but stranger things have happened.

Now I will give you a more sinister take on the signing. Is it possible that he is desired as part of a trade and the other team wanted him signed before the trade was made? This is pure speculation--I have heard nothing regarding this--but it did occur to me when I saw the early signing that it could be the reason.

Goodness, Leslie, can't you give us at least a full season to get excited about a prospect that might just, for once, be a legit first line offensive talent? :)

Not physical or north south enough for that comparison. Tony D needs to add a physical dimension before he hits bad mother****** status, but his game is in the vein of a Gaborik or Grabner.

Speedy little sniper that can really fly. Creates a lot of scoring chances by creating separation.

Confident with the puck at high speeds. I think the Rangers really hit a home run with him.

Ugh. How's his vision? Can he create something out of nothing or does he need someone to set him up like Gaborik?

Gaborik in his last season here didn't look like he had the legs he once used to.

Tony D's got wheels. He creates something out of nothing with his speed, or forcing defenders to turn. He's focused on scoring goals, and can rip it from any area in the slot for a high quality scoring chance.

With his head and hands, in open ice with speed, this is one of those guys that very few defenders will be able to keep up with.

He's not a playmaker. He likes to control the puck though but I don't know if it'll work in the NHL. I see him becoming a scoring and speedy winger.

Maybe. Roy did extra time with him at practice last year so it shows he cared. Probably a combination of coaching and draft pressure didn't help. Also, sophomore slump is something that exists in the NHL but also in junior leagues.
