I feel he has probably been signed, and Lou is pulling the usual, keeping it to himself.

Maybe he is not talking due to other moves/signings? Who knows. In Lou we trust.

Why would Lou not announce the signing? We have plenty of cap space and it would help slow the talk of that other guy leaving.

I'm no big fan of throwing tons of money on unproven players. Not that big of a fan of Brunner. I guess he's ok since we need help and we're not giving up assets for him, but I would still like us to go after Vanek or someone similar.

If we trade for Vanek, it would most likely start with Henrique going the other way. So now that we gave up on our younger and cheaper forward, we need another top 6 forward. What is the next move? We have to see the big picture and not get stuck making a reactionary move that would hurt in the long run.

Also, I agree... Could we please make sure we leave the talk of that other guy in his thread. He's not a Devil anymore and I'm trying to avoid reading about it.

any trade for any forward needs to be trading from our plethora of D

trading any forward in a deal to acquire another forward (even if he is better) just creates more holes.

I wasn't defending "my guy." I was just pointing out a questionable assumption (especially with two players at starkly different stages of their career). It should be noted that I believe this team will be better off going forward without a more injury prone Kovalchuk and his burdensome contract.

Fair enough, but still that post was uncalled for.

Just give me a pancake. I don't smoke. :sarcasm:

And semak, I really don't understand why some people still try to defend what Traitorchuk did. It's mind-boggling....

With warm boysenberry sauce.

Listen, there's many ways we can look at what happened and verbally chastise Kovy or find a way to understand or defend his actions. Either way, it's just view points and opinions but there's no right or wrong here.

Fans are emotional by nature and they tend to throw objectivity out the window, especially when a player of Kovalchuk's importance leaves this team high and dry at a critical time. That's the beauty of sport fandom in that it carves out little cults.

True and that's the nature of fandom and being a sports fan. We tend to forget that these players are humans. In no way does that statement condone or defend what Kovy.

Guess I'll come back when there is actual discussion about the New Jersey Devils 2013 team, and not this continued argument over Kovalchuk and other nonsense which really means nothing. I understand it is shocking and needs to be talked about, but this is not discussion, it's shear debate. Can't it be held in the Kovalchuk Quit thread?

Really now, come on...

You're right and I'm guilty of it too. Sometimes these threads seem to roll in to one and even I forget where I am sometimes:laugh:

Alright, Quitterchuk talk is down and to the right.

To be honest, we all never know what Lou is thinking or doing and why, but I would not doubt if Brunner already is signed and on his way to NJ. Why Lou wouldn't say, I couldn't guess.

And now that someone pointed it out, trading Henrique for Vanek is a redundant idea. Perhaps maybe prospects and such, like they got for Pominville (don't remember the specifics/ exc. the 1st pick)

Yes we have a 17 thread and a Elias thread, leave it over there.

I agree with Bruce though, Brunner is because Detroit put their eggs in other baskets and ran out of room. Depending on the contract this could be a good signing.

Glad Lou isn't taking this punch in the gut to slow him down. He isn't going to let this season just vanish.

Potentially, it's a relatively young nose with room for improvement

IT depends on the forward. If we are talking Loki or JJ I think we consider it, Henrique is a non-starter though because it becomes almost a wash, actually even worse because top D prospects would be going with him.

Unfortunately, even if Lou wanted to he can't, unless we picked up a 1st pick for 2014. Basically, we have to shoot high this season, because playing awfully will only hurt the fan base and more so the financial situation; only to leak blood for the entire off-season due to no draft picks worth diving for.

Which leaves me to think... Lou has a huge trick up his sleeve to fill the void left by the huge trick Kovalchuk had up his sleeve.

I don't know about Loki, although without Kovalchuk it could be different. But I definitely liked his play last year. Not saying he can't be traded.

There probably doing there homework on Brunner throughout the weekend and something will be announced on Monday is what I'm guessing. Were probably bidding against ourselves at this point. If there really this interested in him then there probably gonna get him.

sign brunner for a couple years, hope we can get somewhere, hope we somehow get our first back, sell at the deadline if it comes to that, sign schneider long term as soon as possible, suck real bad in 2015, draft mcdavid, add the new crosby to a now seasoned young d-corps and a veteran offense. i can dig it.

For Vanek with an extension? I'd send Loki, he is more expendable.

Well that is a no-brainer for me, I would trade Loki+ for Vanek. But Loki should only be moved if it is bringing a proven forward back, nothing less.

You still need to win the draft lotto. If we have the worst record in the NHL and lose the lotto, the whole sucking is a complete waste. I don't want McDavid, but I'll be ecstatic if he falls into our laps.

Hypothetically, if the NHL really does rig the draft, who would they give McDavid to?

it's not that i want to suck on purpose, but if elias, zubrus, etc. start to decline, we could be in trouble unless something weird happens like we sign vanek.

Not true. They would give it to whatever major market is in need of a jolt. By 2015, I'd put money on Montreal.

In what world will Montreal ever need a boost??

I stick with Arizona 3 years into their agreement would give that team and HUGE boost. Also help keep them there longer. Clearly the NHL wants to keep them there for a long time.

A jolt in the sense of success. Montreal hasn't won a Cup in over 20 years. If we're speaking from a marketing standpoint, the Isles stand out especially with the move to Barclays.

If one of the California teams is struggling, likely one of them. If not....Dallas, Phoenix, or one of the Western Canadian teams (CGY probably).

Maybe even NJ as odd as that would be. It would help keep us out of any potential bankruptcy\. A bankruptcy of any team can bring the perception of instability for the entire league. It would also help sweep the whole Kovalchuk fiasco under the rug.

I guess Phoenix is an obvious answer but the NHL has to realize someday that that franchise is doomed. No matter how well they compete they will always be intolerably unprofitable. The other sunbelt teams are also good options
