... but if the same pattern happens next year, I can see a firing. For Pete's sake I hope Lou does some shopping this summer.

Even if Lou doesn't do anything though, we still have a playoff caliber team. Deep at forward, deep at defense, goaltending is iffy but can be good. We just need a guy to create some chemistry though.

I'm starting to wonder if we're really a budget team.

Or we're a team that isn't going to pay exorbitant amounts for marginal improvements. Not making a splash doesn't have to mean its a "budget" operation. Savvy maybe, but I wouldn't paint it as being cheap.

Yea. We're already down a 1st and a good amount of other picks. I'm not sure what anyone was realistically expecting from Lou today

If we were a budget team, we wouldn't have added four guys to our payroll this year.

We're not a budget team as much as there is no reason for us to give up the assets that we can't afford to for the guys with the higher cap hits.

Teams like Minnesota, and Columbus have the luxury of excess prospects that they can afford to give up and not take a hit. We can't say the same, add to that we aren't trading firsts and seconds, and Lou got some pretty damn good players for low picks.

Jacob Josefson will be recalled from Albany (AHL) in very near future. He's back from a concussion.

where does he fit in now though?

I was gonna say, we're running out of spots, especially with the eight defensemen:

Elias-Loik-Clarkson
Sullivan-Henrique-D'Agostini
Poni-Zajac-Zubrus
Carter-Gionta-Bernier
Barch-Kostopolus

And we can't have two extra forwards, so 'as is' someone's got to be sent down. And that's before Josefson's supposedly being recalled. Maybe Kosto-Barch are going bye-bye on waivers.

EDIT: Nevermind, apparently there's no roster limit from this point forward. I thought that was just for the playoffs for some reason. So I guess at least we can finally have extra forward(s) on the roster.

Edit: to address the other edit :)

Anyway - With all the big bodies now in the bottom 6, and ones that can play hockey, I think Josefson can be put in a situation to succeed.

He played some of (what I thought was) his best hockey playing between Carter and Bernier.
I think playing with any of those two or Sullivan will make a really solid line.

Once Kovalchuk is back, the top 6 becomes more well rounded.
Just need to insert some stability into the defense... and I think we're ok.
We've seen better teams, but it's not quite the disaster than we think it is.

Those guys we acquired were all on low paying contracts. I'll wait until UFA day to reserve judgement, but many last year were saying we were a budget team with all our guys that made over a million having to go to free agency.

And why is Josefson being recalled? We'll be having a couple guys out of the lineup. Of course Barch and Kosto go right out, but what about Sullivan now?

If budget was a concern we would have moved one of the d-men to take anything back and save money there.

I think keeping our high picks was a concern vis-a-vis the 'big' deals, especially with losing a third already this year and a first next year.

They want a fifth center around instead of having to recall Sestito every time one of our top four pivots miss a game. We've already had to run out Sestito or Matteau at fourth-line center several times this year.

Cant see him fitting anywhere. When fully fit, i expect these lines:

Sullivan-Lokti-Kovy
Elias-Henrique-Clarkson
Zubrus-Zajac-Dagostini
Carter-Gionta-Bernier

Ponikarovsky will probably be rotated in and out with Sullivan and Dagostini
Barch and the Greek will probably get sent down.

Good point. Any time I've wanted to shift the blame to our Hucksterbeek owner rather than Lou I think of the Salvador contract. Was kind of a waste of $3 million when we have over $10 million invested in Salvador, Suckchenkov, and Tallinder. That's a lot of money for guys who don't really rack up points and are stay at home guys. Particularly Salvador and Conekov cause Tallinder has some offensive upside. I'll wait until UFA to see what Lou does. We need to pick someone up on the market this year at forward.

We're ****ed regardless tbh  We really don't have much future right now

Defensively, we're fine. What we need is a trade for a scoring forward, or for one of our forward prospects to enter the league on fire. That's not easy to do.

If we miss the playoffs Deboer will get canned.

Not a chance. Getting to the Cup Final in his first year has bought him a lot of credit. If we miss this year and then again next year, he's gone. But not this year.

They'll probably sit Loktionov for a few. Seems to be the trend on D; play well? Get benched!

In all reality, I bet Lokti's injury is still nagging him. Probably want to give him some time to rest down the stretch.

that would be asinine. he's been our best player.

dont mind yayo getting another shot but let him play 5+ games in albany to get back in the swing of things.

Josefson is in a weird spot he seems to do well in the AHL 25 points in 38 games, but when he is up here its like he isnt ready. Wish the kid would go on a hot streak and prove he can play and score in the NHL some.

I truly believe our poor defensive play is a direct result of the forwards inability to maintain posession time and generate scoring chances.

In that case, the solution is as said above, someone needs to get hot, or we need someone to come in red hot.
