He didn't want to play for Torts.

I have no doubt that Korps would have stayed had we had a different HC.

Pretty sure he was moved because his agent used the KHL as a threat for a bigger contract.

Irony is that he was traded for a KHL bound player from another team, but Korpikoski isn't a Ranger because of contract negotiations.

If you've noticed, all of the homegrown players that have had tough negotiations with Slats either get unsigned, or moved.

Dubi, Cally, Prust, DZ, Korpi... Sather doesn't like working more than he has to.

I might hate Sather but "Sather is tough on his players in negotiations" being a way of calling him lazy is garbage. Prust wanted way more than what he was worth, same with Callahan. Dubinsky got fair value. Korpi wasn't worth what he was asking. It's the way Sather handles negotiations, and for the most part, I agree with it.

Would a better solution have been give Prust 2 million?

Immonen I believe

Kim Hirschovits was the name I was looking for.

explain this, how come the Rangers have not drafted a finnish player since Korpikoski which was 10 years ago? is that normal to avoid a hockey player in a certain european league?

I think the answer is this, we haven't drafted any kid from Finland because there was nobody worth drafting. It was a good call. Like, who did we miss out on?

This happens to the smaller countries. Its happening for sure to the Slovaks right now, look at the Slovaks like the last 10 years. How many good players have they produced? Not many.

Sweden was in a funk like that from like 81' to 85' or something like that. We produced like sub 10 decent NHL skaters during 5 years, Steen, Enström, Nik Kronwall and 2-3 more skaters and then a big nothing (Hank aside).

There is not one single Finn in the NHL born between 87-91', ie born in 88, 89 and 90. Not even a 4th lineer or 3rd pairing D. During the three following years, there are 6 Finns in the league, and a few that still could make it.

There are some great players that have come out of Finland and Slovakia but there's a limited number of players who can actually play in the NHL as well or better than most 3rd-4th line North Americans--which is to say that the players that tend to fill out teams in North America are pretty much a lot like the players that tend to fill out teams in Europe and for the most part stay put in their own countries or on their own continents.

Again Finland has a population of approx 5.4 million people--less than NYC--about the population of Detroit Michigan. Finland has done pretty well for itself considering that there are somewhere around maybe 15 top to good quality NHL'ers playing today and a handful of lesser quality and keeping in mind that there are probably even a few more Finns who could easily play in the NHL but would rather play in their own country or in the KHL.

I find this assumption (by someone else) that Sather has some kind of bias against Finns to be absurd. I don't particularly care for Sather but this isn't an issue.

Apparently The New York Rangers Blog interviewed Ryan Graves

Sorry if this has been addressed, but is there any news on Duclair?

Nothing official no. A few days ago, it was mentionned he'd be back before Erne (who is scheduled to come back on march 31st), and Duclair was apparently all smiles when asked about his recovery. Without actual quotes, the local newspapers now seem to be assuming he'll miss friday's and saturday's games... wouldn't be surprised it's «playoffs stuff», the media «doing their part» and all. Or they just have actual info, who knows :naughty:

I just got around to updating the stats in the first post. Sorry, I'm in the middle of a move IRL. Back to regular updates now!

One thing I noticed in updating the stats is that Buchnevich didn't play in the past couple Nadezhda Cup games for Severstal; instead, he played in the club's MHL squad playoff games, where he now has 6 points in 4 games. The MHL is the top Russian junior league.

Huh. Now I feel stupid.

I thought the MHL was like the AHL

The VHL is the Russian equivalent of the AHL. To make matters more confusing, it's sometimes still referred to as the Minor Hockey League (which would be MHL) or HHL, Higher Hockey League.

MHL is Molodezhnaya Hokkeinaya Liga, Junior Hockey League. Everything got all confusing with the creation of the KHL. No more Russian Superleague, etc.

I wish they created a Central European hockey league for Sweden, Finland, Germany, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia, Poland. Would be the best league outside of the NHL.

the Champions Hockey League is starting next fall, you can see that as a first step into this direction. But, as of now, and for the foreseeable future, I don't think there's going to be cooperation beyond that. For Slovak, Czech, Polish, Slovenian and Austrian teams, the money just isn't there for that kind of project. Costs of traveling would explode, as most temas in Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland travel by bus. And the strongest Slovenian team (Olympija Ljubljana) is barely able to afford that. Sure, you can always have conferences and divisions, and teams only seeing each other in the Playoffs, but then what's the point of having a league in the first place.

And the few teams who are able to afford the more expensive roster (you need to stay competitive in order to draw people to the arenas) are lured by the KHL, see f.ex. Zagreb, Bratislava, Jokerit Helsinki, sooner or later Eisbären Berlin, Red Bull Munich and a team in Milan. I think the most realistic option would be KHL expanding west and installing a Euro Division. But that's where you shouldn't forget to factor in politics, and right now the EU-Russia relations sure look tense.

Furthermore, you shouldn't forget that many leagues live off the rivalries the teams have established. Slovakian hockey is still suffering from Bratislava heading off for the KHL - now Kosice is uncontested and teams like Trencin or Zilina, traditionally hotbeds for hockey in Slovakia, don't even bother to put up a fight. It results in a drop in attendance. You'd have the same situation in Czech Republic, if you extract Sparta, Slavia or Kometa from their league. Same for EBEL with KAC, Villach, and possibly even Vienna. I won't speak for DEL or SHL as I don't have the necessary insight, but I think I can remember a bit of a shock in Sweden when Djurgarden was relegated.

Little anecdote: We've had the finals for the European Trophy in Vienna. Lulea played Brynas in the quarters, attendance: about 300. Vienna played Berlin later that night, attendance: 5000. Now, that was with really low prices, I think the most expensive tickets were like 25€ - including BOTH games. So yes, 5000 people bought tickets for both games, as they were only sold as a package, and about 4700 didn't bother to show up for what was (quality wise) probably the best club hockey game on Austrian ice in years. And boy, did the Caps (Vienna's hockey club) ever go all in on the promotion for those games. People are more interested to see ****ing Dornbirn than they are to see Swedish teams, or even their home team taking on European competition. Now, I surely hope they can establish the CHL a little better and draw more people to the arenas. We will see, I'm leaning cautiously optimistic.

I'd love to see Swedish or Finnish teams more frequently in Austria, but right now that's a pipe dream.

/OT rant. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Then maybe a North European League consisting of Sweden, Finland and Germany. It wouldn't be as good, but those nations can afford to do some traveling, particularly in the playoffs. The league would be stronger than the SHL alone.

For those able to watch, Penn State - Michigan just started the first round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament on the Big Ten Network.

Michigan's season is most likely over. The selection show is on Sunday. Nieves with PDG and Moffatt had some good looks.

And that's fine for now, no need to rush him back with that kind of injury.

He's still very young, no need to fast track his career, he needs to stay healthy.

Concussions are weird. You can be out for months and then find out it's the slightest tweak in your neck thats causing you problems. He will be fine.

I'd rather shut him down for the year. Save him for training camp and let him train hard over the summer. He already proved he's a top dog in the Q.
