Doesn't work that way. At the time Boyle was on his entry level contract which would result in him being a restricted free agent, meaning he would be basically bound to the Rangers for years if they wanted him.

Boyle is now a UFA at the end of the season, meaning he's a pure rental for any team that trades for him.

A more valid comparison is Michal Handzus, who in the same situation last season returned a fourth round draft pick.

Handzus was dumped as he was awful in SJ. Not a good comparable.

And Handzus and Boyle are very comparable...except that the trade led to Handzus winning a Stanley Cup, and his play led to the Blackhawks signing him to a new contract this year.

'No one wanted his contract' is not a valid statement...his contract had 26 days left on it.

And the Stanley Cup champs did want him and those 26 days of his contract...and they signed him to another contract as well.

Handzus is the best comparison to Boyle.

I think Gaustad is a better overall player than Boyle. He's one of the elite face-off men in the league, and is a very capable fighter. Boyle is a very good defensive center, but a step below IMO. Assuming they decided to sell off pieces, I think if the Rangers could get a 2nd round pick or a solid prospect for him.

At the deadline, every team has two needs in common: size and depth. Boyle provides both while being an excellent role player.

He was brought in to be a 3rd line center who could take key draws and be a defensive stalwart. He was God awful in SJ. They tried to move him and no one would take him all year. That's irrelevant when you're talking about expiring contracts with UFA status at the end of the year. A team trading for Boyle (or Handzus, or anyone with UFA status) is only buying that player for the rest of the season...not what is left in the tank after that season.

Chicago was awful at the time and just throwing young players out there and letting them develop. It worked out. Does that mean that every young player that looks like Sharp (skilled, undersized, old for a prospect) should return whatever Sharp would return now? No.

Unless there is urgent emergency, acquiring team will pay less now, but still we are looking at early middle 2nd, IMO.

Gaustad was on pace for 25 points the year he was traded.

Brian Boyle has 2 points in 7 games, over 82 games that's 25 points which is about his average.

Gaustad is an animal in the face-off dot. 56.8%

Brian Boyle is 53.8% right now.

Both hit, PK and provide great size down the middle.

Gaustad is a little more skilled I would say but I wouldn't say they are that different.

On July 19, 2006, the Rangers traded Moore to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 3 team trade.

On February 27, 2007, the Penguins traded Moore to the Minnesota Wild for a 2007 third round draft pick.

On January 11, 2008, the Toronto Maple Leafs claimed Moore off waivers from the Minnesota Wild. He made his debut with the Maple Leafs on January 12, 2008 against the San Jose Sharks. The 2008-09 season brought a new role for Moore as he was assigned to center Toronto's top scoring line with left winger Jason Blake. On March 4, 2009, Moore was traded by the Leafs to the Buffalo Sabres for a second round pick.[1] In the 63 games before being traded, he had already reached career highs in goals, assists and points.

On October 4, 2009, Moore signed a 1 year, $1.1 million deal with the Florida Panthers.[2]

On February 11, 2010, Moore was traded to the Montreal Canadiens for a 2nd round draft pick in 2011.

On July 30, 2010, the Tampa Bay Lightning signed Moore to a 2 year deal worth a reported $2.2 million.

On February 10, 2012, Moore was fined $2,500 for an interference infraction that injured New York Ranger Ruslan Fedotenko.

On February 16, Moore was traded to the San Jose Sharks along with a 7th round pick for a 2nd round pick. With the trade, it marks Moore's ninth NHL club and the seventh time in his career he has been traded.

Last few days it's been getting better with treatment and exercise.
