Pesonen slid his skate in to LeNeveu's glove as he covered a loose puck and pushed it in. 2 - 0 Albany.

Johnson throws it on net after the PP expired and Haley re-directs it in. Assists by Johnson and Hensick.

The 'pack PP is good at keeping the puck in the zone but they don't always generate quality chances. The puck movement is decent.

Dammit: Joe Whitney makes it 3-1. Baby Devils, pls.

lol "TJ Miller"

Good job Wolfpack color guy. Give me the mic, I hope they don't pay this guy.

Allen has made a few real nice passes tonight.

The pack scores an identical goal. Johnson loafs one towards the net and Powe "redirects" it in past Kinkaid (who has had a great game.) 3 - 2

GAME NOTES

FIRST PERIOD

Hrivik starting with Hensick and Powe.

Hrivik with a good hustle play to create an opportunity for Hensick in the first minute.

Lindberg playing with Haley and Kristo on the second line. Drives to the net with a decent shot on goal.

Bourque-Miller-Fast is the top line.

Miller with a great pass that led to a huge scoring chance for Vaive.

Beach playing with Yogan and Vaive.

Allen messed up defensively behind the net.

Allen shoots it in... Fast to Bourque to Miller, great shot, but no goal. This line looks great.

Two on one for the Baby Devils, but good leg save by LeNeveu.

Hughes with a very good play to keep the puck in, pass to Haley, pass to Kristo who makes a great move, but hits the goal post with Kinkaid lying there helpless. But a great move by Kristo.

Miller with another good pass to Fast, but another save.

Very good start by the Packers so far. The Bourque-Miller-Fast line looking particularly good.

PENALTY: Kristo causes a turnover. Miller grabs the puck, but is slashed hard and looks in a lot of pain. He was hit in the face with a stick, but it's just 2 minutes because there's no blood.

Miller tripped up again on the PP, but refs suck at this level. Creates a good scoring chance on the PP right after that.

Pretty sure there are multiple people named Miller and all of them are too good for the AHL. These Miller guys are everywhere.

The PP looked very good, though it didn't convert.

Nash with a good defensive play one on one.

Lindberg is a smart player, but I doubt he has the skill to play on the top-6 in the NHL. Think of a slower version of Hagelin, I guess. He's not slow, but not as fast, so he won't be as good. But he can turn into a very good third liner.

I like Hrivik's game. I still think he'll be an NHLer. Not a star, but a decent role player.

Haley undressed a defenseman and went one on one (a very short one as he was already right in front of the goalie) against Kinkaid, but it didn't go in.

Fast has a good knack for getting himself in position where he can score. I think a lot of people here underestimate his offensive skill.

FIRST PERIOD OVER

Bourque ties it from his stomach in front of the net. Another puck just thrown at the net. This time by Allen.

Go 'pack!

Bourque - Miller - Fast has been a great line all game. You can tell KennyG has been riding them big time.

Going in to OT.

'Pack 14 shots to Albany's 1 in the third.

Back and forth in the OT, Miller gets poke checked at the end which leads to an Albany 2 on 1. Going to the shootout.

Tendeby scores a nice backhand on LeNeveu. 1 - 0

Hensick rips one past Kinkaid. 1 - 1

LeNeveu makes the save on Boucher. 1 - 1

Miller waits out Kinkaid and dekes him quickly. 2 - 1 'Pack

Sislo tried to go top shelf and LeNeveu stops it. 2 - 1 'Pack

Fast comes in and rips it exactly where Hensick did. 3 - 1 'Pack

Whitney moves in LeNeveu and makes a slick move to his right, LeNeveu makes a great glove save on him and wins it for the 'Pack. 3 - 1, or 4 - 3 in the SO.

Edit: Despite his early brain-fart Miller gets first star of the game.

SECOND PERIOD

Powe gets elbowed in the face, Allen gets a stick in his gut, but the refs are blind as a bat at this level.

Fast repeatedly unafraid to go into the dirty areas or to take a hit to make the right play.

Bourque is really underrated on this forum. He skates, he hits, he shoots. He has a better chance of making the NHL than a lot of other prospects people regard as far superior.

PENALTY: Beach takes a penalty, but it was a good penalty because it prevented a breakaway.

On the PK, Powe shoots and Kinkaid has a hard time controlling the rebound. Haley grabs the puck, but fails to score.

Bourque, Miller, Fast all get PK time (not all at once, two at a time).

Syvret with a good pass to Beach who was coming out of the box. Nice shot, no goal.

Ten pounds of muscle would really help Hrivik. He's not weak, but it would make him more effective along the boards where he spends a lot of his time. I think if he gains 10 pounds without losing any speed, he makes the NHL some time next year.

Hartford looks like the better team, but they always have trouble scoring against Kinkaid.

Do you remember how Stepan looked like a man among boys in the WJC? He looked like he's the dad boying with his little sons? That's almost how Miller looks in the AHL. Not quite, but close. He's clearly the best player on the ice and everyone is aware of it.

Even though Kristo is supposed to be the more gifted offensive player, I think Fast is more intelligent on offense and more opportunistic too. I see Fast as a 20+ goal scorer in the NHL.

Hensick to Hrivik right in front of the goal, nice redirection, but a save by Kinkaid.

Crap, just as I praised Miller, he gives away the puck and that leads directly to a goal. THIS is why he's in the AHL despite all his skill and confidence. His decision-making is idiotic at times because he thinks he can do too much himself. He put it right on the stick of the Baby Devil in front of the Pack goal as if it were a purposeful pass.

Leneveu failed to keep the puck in his glove, and it went in. He shouldn't have dropped it. Terrible. Down 2-0 despite outplaying the Devils.

Another penalty by Beach. Killed off.

Allen with a smart pass to Fast who uses his speed to create a partial breakaway, but it's stopped. Should've been a penalty on the Devils.

Hrivik dumps it in, Fast to Hensick to Hrivik, but he didn't get a clean shot on it because he was tied up.

Refs finally called a penalty on the Devils with 23 seconds to go in the second.

SECOND PERIOD OVER

Other not so ground-breaking thoughts:

Kyle Beach is awful.

Jesper Fast may be the best player not named Miller on the 'Pack right now. He skates well, handles the puck well, and is always finding himself in position to make a play or get a shot off. He's pretty good on the other side of the puck also. I agree with Beacon that he may actually be the better offensive player between him and Kristo when all is said and done.

Kristo continues to be unimpressive despite the numbers. In a game where the 'Pack was completely dominant at times, he was pretty quiet.

Miller and Fast are by far the two most noticeable players. JT Miller is a step above the competition, and this is just restating the obvious. He makes some dumb decisions at times, but otherwise he is dominant on the puck. If he can just learn when to not cross the line and do too much he will be an excellent NHL player.

Bourque is Callahan of the AHL, I just don't know if it will ever translate to the NHL.

Johnson got second star tonight for basically throwing pucks at the net. He had a good game but honestly I think Allen was better on both sides of the puck.

I would tend to agree. Kristo has a shot and good hands. But his decision making with the puck and his game without the puck leave a lot to be desired. Not sure we can really count on him being an nhl regular.

Miller is far above everyone else out there every game. It's bizarre to me how he looks completely different in the ahl and nhl. At the ahl level his vision really is exceptional. But he shows none of that in the nhl.

Fast also stands out, particularly lately. He's been fantastic. The injuries concern me. But I think he's pretty close to NHL ready right now.

Allen's game continues to be solid if unspectacular.

Lindberg I still don't have much faith in. He's an ok player, but I'm not sure if he is good enough either offensively or defensively to be a significant nhl contributor

Agree regarding Fast. I feel like Miller is stronger and more aggressive, able to create more for himself on most shifts. He also makes it difficult for the other team in his own end. Fast however carries the puck very well and is patient. He reminds me a bit of how Zucc is playing on the Rangers right now. He has confidence with the puck and is willing to make plays along the boards as well.

That line was excellent tonight.

Crap, my third period notes disappeared when the computer restarted.

Anyway, Powe scored from Johnson and Hensick.

Fast and Bourque looked really good, they deserve points. Miller has been good except his stupid play that led to the first goal, which led to him having less ice time and less stickhandling.

Bourque with a tremendous pass, displaying unbelievable vision to Fast who makes a great shot, but it's countered by an even greater Kinkaid save going post to post.

Someone tried to hit Miller as he stickhandled, but he just ran over that player.

Just because Hrivik doesn't score, doesn't mean he's not effective as a hustler.

Allen is the best Pack defenseman, both on defense and offense.

GOAL: Bourque scores. Miller wins the draw, but Bourque has to fight to keep possession... pass to Allen who shoots... a small rebound given up and Bourque works hard to grab the rebound from Kinkaid, then goes around him and puts the puck in as he was tackled by a Devil defenseman. Bourque deserves it, big time!

The announcer sounded like it was Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! when Bourque scored. The whole line jumped on Bourque and tackled him in celebration. They know who's the hardest working player on the team. Bourque makes Callahan and Adam Graves look lazy.

The goal is Bourque from Allen.

Haley with a big hit in the last minute.

THIRD PERIOD OVER

OVERTIME

Leneveu makes a good save, then Bourque manhandles a Devil to protect his goalie.

Fast skates the puck out, pass, then drives to the net. Great transition. Kristo should consider taking lessons from Fast on how to be an offensive-minded RW.

Leneveu with 3 saves in a short span.

We were definitely wrong in our prospect poll to rank Lindberg ahead of Fast who has a ton more offensive ability and has much better head for offense.

Bourque displaying his stickhandling skills.

God dammit, Miller causes a two-on-one with another dumb stickhandling play. When he's good, he's really good, but then he messes it up when he confuses himself for Alexey Kovalev.

END OF OVERTIME

SHOOTOUT

Devil: backhand off both posts and in. 1-0
Hensick: slightly to the right, quick wrister and it's tied. 1-1.

Devil: Leneveu makes a save by sliding and closing his pads.
Miller: Skates slowly in, makes a dozen moves until Kinkaid goes to the wrong side and freezes, then puts the puck in the net. Great hands displayed there. 2-1.

Devil: A ton of moves, but not quite Miller-like, so no goal.
Fast: Waves left, then skates right, then a writer and it's 3-1 for the Pack.

Devil: Leneveu slides to his left and makes a nice glove save.

Great game by the Pack!

Do you remember how Stepan looked like a man among boys in the WJC? He looked like he's the dad boying with his little sons? That's almost how Miller looks in the AHL. Not quite, but close. He's clearly the best player on the ice and everyone is aware of it.

This makes me very, very happy. Glad he is taking strides this year.

I purposely avoid reading game notes here because I usually wind up watching the Pack at least a little after it's live and don't want to ruin it for myself.

But after reading the comments by Ailurophile, looks like we are in full agreement on Miller, Fast, Kristo, Allen, etc. I really hope Bourque can figure out a way to crack the NHL. He'd be a fan favorite after two shifts.

Was thinking the exact same thing after reading through your notes. Thirty-one as well in his blog. (Edit: slipknottin too!) I think that is a testament to how each player is standing out for better or worse as we are all able to see essentially the same things with little/any discrepancy.

I agree on Bourque. Callahan who? I don't know if he ever fits in to the line-up going forward, but he sure as hell deserves a shot.

Here's a question: what's wrong with Fast? It's a serious question.

Let's just say you had to argue that he's still a minor leaguer, what flaws would you point out? What does he have to improve to be at least a third liner in the NHL?

I get that he still has ways to go before he can become a 20-25 goal scorer at the NHL level. But what makes him a minor leaguer? I can't figure this one out. I think he looks fully ready for NHL duty. Any thoughts on this?

My concern with fast is how he will handle the physical side. He is very capable in the ahl now of going into traffic areas. I'm not sure if he can take that another level and do it with guys even bigger and stronger

Perhaps he can. Maybe he still needs more time to continue to develop that side of his game and add strength.

It took Zucc awhile to really physically prepare himself to play in traffic areas in the nhl. Might be a similar sort of thing with Fast.
