2008 Born for the 2024 OHL Draft

Cunha from Don Mills is right up there in scoring. Scored another 2 last night vs NYR.
This kid has consistently scored for the last 2 seasons. Top 5 in goals in the gthl this year. He has a shot that is arguably one of the best in the league.

hes 5'7? how many great ohlers are 5'7? there was a player like him last year that had similar production, same size went in the 12th round.

Seemed to do it vs top D on NYR.
Other news? LB of NYR gets maybe 10 minutes a night but considered a prospect? We waiting on potential or is this another failed project.

There will be more than 2 goalies chosen in the first 3 rounds of the OHL draft, calling it now. Other then 2007 Jack Ivan, there isnt a single 2007 goalie from the 2023 OHLCup that is making a splash in their respective league in the 2023/24 season. We will see a higher priority to secure a future golie stud in net this year based on the thinner then usual 2007 goalie pool drafted last year. And MOST scouts are not going to risk taking a goalie that only see's 15-18 shots a game all year. So stellar defences like VK, Barrie, YSE and JRC should be a warning for those goalies that its not ideal they ALWAYS see less then 20 shots every single game.

yse and barrie goalies will be among the first 3 or so drafted. NYR goalie very good as well

Staying focused and doing your job while getting little/less work is a skill in itself.

YSE and Barrie goalies will all be selected before round 5, IMO.

parents use initials for some reason, not sure why. He’s trash talking a d on NYR for some reason
No one is trash talking. It's an opinion.
a smaller kid that can score is a kid that can score. It all depends what the team is looking for.
He's done well on a mid pack team and again it's impressive.
LB is a giant of a D for NYR and maybe he has 12 points all year. People love him because he's 6"3 but he's a liability on the Ice explains why the limited ice during the year including playoffs.

I agree. Playing on a bad team the previous year has helped him improve in so many ways.
NYR will need him for a deep playoffs push.

For those like me who are still learning, here are the goalies being discussed.
BAR - Mateo Beites
BAR - Jason Schaubel
YSE - Riley Barkey
YSE - Colin Ellsworth
NYR - Max Grovestine
NYR - Brady Knowling
JRC - William Camputaro
JRC - Cam Ingram
VK - Justin Young
VK - Joseph D'Angelo

Any opinion on who is stronger from each pair?

Toronto Titans #9 Kreppner was excellent tonight vs Vaughn. Not easy to place against, wins his battles, has some skill, finishes checks, forechecks and backchecks hard.

Six teams have clinched spots in the OHL Cup after tonight's results:

Huron Perth Lakers (Alliance)
Ottawa Myers (HEO)
Ottawa Valley Titans (HEO)
Sun County Panthers (Alliance)
Toronto Marlboros (GTHL)
Vaughan Kings (GTHL)

Not a single one of these goalies listed have seen more then 25 shots in a single game in the 2023/24 season. If they did get that much work, its a "one"off" busy game, and didnt happen for 20 games of being busy, thats it. Do you watch Junior A/B, BCHL, OHL games? They wouldn't last 2 exhibition games at the next level because there's zero adversity built-into playing behind Allstar U16 rosters over several years like this. You can't coach adversity.

Just for some context that my statement is based on data and not opinion.... THE very best 7 goalies with the highest SAVE %'s in the 2023 OHLCup, only 4 were drafted! Rounds: 7th, 8th, 12th, 15th and then the 3 others on that OHLCup goalie stat leaderboard weren't even drafted at all. Every single one of those 7 goalies in 2023 just KILLED it at the OHLCup in the biggest tourney of their lives and were hardly recognized, if at all......simply because they had it way too easy for too long.

The 2 highest drafted goalies picked after Jack Ivan had these stat lines at the OHLCup, both 2nd round choices:
3-2 win/loss, 3.23 gaa, .892 save %
0-3 win/loss 4.03 gaa, .890 save %

Bottom line is Scouts look beyond the stats, they look for seasoned warriors that can help burden a "real" workload on an avg to below avg Junior A/B or OHL team if that ends up being the needs of the GM. No one listed above has being do that in 2024.

I feel for these goalies that are on top teams. There really is no way to confidently assess how good they are by U16 because, as you say, many of them don't face many shots just due to the teams they are on. Doesn't mean they're not good...not going to say that at all. Just that it's hard to compare them against their counterparts who are on lesser teams. A lot of talent doesn't even get the chance to be seen all that much.

It's kind of a catch 22 for goalies. Be on a top team who wins and likely doesn't face enough difficult situations all season long...or be on a struggling team where you literally face 35+ shots each night and lose. The latter develops and often goes home early, trying to look for the positives in their own games...the former wins and goes home with hardware believing they are a winner.

Much easier to evaluate skaters by U16 than it is those who protect the net. Skaters can actively show what they're made of...goalies have to wait for the crap that drips down! LOL

so all your years of scouting makes you think that the 5’7 kid will be a top pick? how do you explain a very similar player with similar stats last year went I t he 12th round. parents see today, scouts see long term. if your expectations are he is one of the first players selected your setting him up for failure

there’s a lot of narrative to this, here’s what they truly look for.

-size but it’s getting less important. 6ft and above is pretty much mandatory for anyone in the top 5/10 rounds.
-talent, they can’t just be a blocker with little skill, those guys to make it from time to time but skill is important
-compete. Work hard for pucks and battle for second saves
-fighting for picks and sightlines

If you’re 5’8 it’s going to be very hard for you regardless of talent. If your 5’8 and try to play blocking like your 6’4, it’s a long hard road, smaller guys need high skill and compete.

I’ve been scouting for OHL teams for 20 years, I’m you can tell me I’m full of it that’s fine, but tre YSE and Barrie goalies will be among the first few drafted.

vk kids are not that talented for thier size, I’d be worried about them. knowing is very good, camputaro is a project but works and competes. Ellswood and beites are among the top. Don’t see alot in the other goalies on Barrie and yse

What are some good defencemen where a team would find between the 6-12 spot of the draft?

I figure kingston will likely get one or if there is a high level goalie like ivankovic again they’ll take a goalie.

Also does anyone have some probable ohl comparables for the defencemen?

You know anything about the London Jr. Knights goalie, Durno?
I played ball hockey with his dad back in the day (also a goalie).
Will Durno get drafted?
