if we got Bobby Ryan i would then trade Lupul for either:
-a big shutdown quality D - same age
-or a #1 C - same age
(throw in Gunnarsson)

Leafs claimed Steve Macintyre today from Pitts...

6'5" 250lbs defenseman, wonder why we keep stocking up on D.

Is this official?

#Leafs have not claimed F Steve MacIntyre off waivers. Could happen, but nothing official right now.

I don't know who this guy is, but seems legit. And Seigel retweeted him.

Apparently Columbus was offered more for Nash at the deadline than they did that summer. Yes.

Doesn't mean the Kessel situation will be the same. Both very talented players, but Kessel is younger than Nash and has a 5.4M cap hit while Nash's is 7.8.

Who knows when we will know if Kessel wants to return or not. If we do happen to know by the trade deadline that he is having mixed feelings about staying long-term and we have a great offer on the table at that time then you won't hear any complaints from me if Nonis pulls the trigger. If there is nothing that blows Nonis' socks off then I hope he waits for the draft/off-season.

Leafs might have put a claim in on him, but if one of the team lower than the Leafs in the standings also put in a claim they'd get him.

What do you think would make it close?

I think that the Islanders have all of their good young players in their core and need some good complimentary players and maybe some stud dmen.

Howden is going to be good and I would give up a lot for him.

Blacker has really disappointed in the AHL and Nelson had a solid college career and is having a decent rookie season in the AHL so I don't think they'd like that swap. Macarthur is a UFA this summer so unless he finds chemistry with Tavares I think that would just be a rental for them, which isn't what they'd be looking for at this point at least IMO. I think Finn or Percy would interest them more, but I'm not sure how high they are on Nelson.

The Florida deal isn't very far off in terms of value, but I'm not so sure the Panthers would be interested in a dman prospect. They already have some good young dmen and d prospects, while being pretty weak on the wings for prospects making Howden pretty valuable to them. Not sure what he'd cost us.

Don't think he's played D in awhile, pretty sure he's 4th line LW enforcer. Arguably the toughest guy in the NHL (when he's in it). Has beaten Orr quite handedly in the past.

I'm in favour of having an Enforcer (if this is indeed true), we need someone to scare Chara, Lucic and Thornton. Macintyre would beat both Lucic and Thornton quite handedly. As for Chara, he'd likely either stay away from Macintyre, or grab him and wrestle him to the ground (like he does against all men actually in his category).

Macintyre is one of the best and feared fighters in the NHL, frankly he is not much of a player at all. But with him in the lineup he will at least protect the Maple Leaf from being stepped on. But in terms of hockey it wasn't much of a signing if at all. If we have Orr and Macintyre in the line up and we are losing, at least games are watchable if we are getting our butts kicked.

Mac is a good player to have when a message needs to be sent. I would have him out against Lucic onhis first shift, with the sole purpose of smashing him, and setting the tone.

Yes, although Blacker has had a tough year this year (injuries have played a huge part), he isn't playing that bad. He does have a bit to go to make the NHL, but so does Nelson. Also for a sidenote on the Islanders, their whole 2012 draft were all defencemen.

Outside of Gudbranson, I'm not sure who is going to be a good young dman for them. Kulikov is pretty solid, but I'm not sure where he falls in.

Kulikov >>> gudbranson.

Watched Blacker today and he had a rough game, his lack of production again this season is starting to be a worry. His Ice Q has always been a question mark, he is nearing 90 AHL games and he is still stuck on 1 goal, and if I recall correctly it was a lucky goal. He is a long way from making the NHL.

Do you think the skill level is there to be coached or do you think he will become a career AHL player?

I have this weird feeling that Kessel may be the big name that is on the block this deadline. There is a star every year.

Kulikov would be a homerun, but I can't see too many reason/scenarios where Florida gives him up.

Well as you said they have Kuli and Gudbranson. For prospects they have Petrovic, Matheson, Robak and Bengtsson. Not amazing depth, but not horrible. On the wing, their only prospects that will turn into anything are Huberdeau and Howden IMO.

This is interesting because I have heard the opposite about blacker this year - that he has looked quite good despite his lack of offensive production.

It all depends on where the Leafs sit at the deadline I think. If we're in that 6th-10th range, or only one/two points out of eighth, I can't see Nonis trading him for prospects/picks.

He can skate, carry the puck, he's got better skills than Gunnarson. But half the brain of Gunnarson and that is his problem. You can teach him certain things, but he will never play the game instinctively. Otherwise we would have seen this by now. I see him as a 3rd pairing D man, of the Komi variety. That's how he looks like out there when he is thinking the game.
