If I ignore the names on the jerseys, I see a guy overreacting to an unfortunate play with an even worse, far more predatory hit. I think to myself, that guy needs to learn to control his emotions.

If I don't ignore the names on the jerseys, I see one of my old favorite players (Zucker) destroying one of my least favorite players (Cousins) and think "wow, karma's a bitch!"

Both things can be true. Zucker deserved his penalty, and probably should sit a game or two. Cousins maybe deserved a minor penalty for his hit, if any. This feels a bit like karma caught up with Cousins, even if this particular play didn't warrant the reaction from Zucker.

Cousins’ reputation is well earned, but the Coyote player dropped to his knees to try and keep puck in the zone right as Cousins was coming at him. He didn’t leave his feet, and if there was an elbow it was because the Coyote player‘s foolish decision to go to his knees as a guy was coming in to hit him. I understand why Cousins gets no benefit or the doubt, but it looked like he tried to let up when the Coyote inexplicably dropped to his knees right in front of him. That’s why no call was made on Cousins.

My man, time for an appointment

In other news. Minnesota Wild working the phones in desperation trying to acquire Nick Cousins.

GM Bill Guerin said, "We love what Nick is about as a player, he fits the Wild mold perfectly. He's exactly the kind of player we want representing our club and playing our brand of head hunting. Our team motto has always been, 'strike first, strike hard, show no mercy".

Wild offer 2024 1st (top 6 protected) and someone small and soft like Alex Goligoski

Eric Gudbranson gnawing on the remote in just the right way to luck into watching that hit is a real heartwarming coincidence.

I'm sure the boys have TV's and some couches at the team facilites with NHL Network on in the background.

I'd like to imagine imagine Erik saw a replay and had the reaction in the .gif.

Cousins is trash, but the initial replay in the OP gives a false impression. Watch the angle at 0:23 instead. He’s going in for a routine check and his target inexplicably drops to his knees at the very last second. What’s he supposed to do? He’s already committed and starting the hitting motion. He can’t teleport around the guy.

Totally understand Zucker retaliating, but that was a much more flagrant attempt to injure than the Cousins hit. Wouldn’t be surprised to see only Zucker getting a call from the league.

Hate to say I agree but the officials not only drop the ball on these things, I'm more and more convinced the league desires pro wrestling type theatrics and chaos with zero regard for player safety. Players only have themselves and their teammates for support.
The NHLPA has some hand in this sort of thing as well. Where is the dialogue from them about getting the cheap shots out of the game? The players themselves seem to have no regard for player safety since they don't every do anything about it.
