Post-Game Talk: Zibanejad worst Ranger since.....?

Every roster has holes. We're not talking about just holes. We're talking about holes at 1C and 1D.

Here are the teams who are absolutely fine in both positions:

Toronto
Florida
Tampa
Detroit
Buffalo
Ottawa
Carolina
Pittsburgh
Winnipeg
Colorado
Dallas
Vancouver
Vegas
Edmonton
LA

Even some of the most garbage teams in the league have a top center and a top defenseman. We're starting Evan Fournier at point guard and me at center and making leadership the biggest problem.

So what's the path forward then? New line combos? If the roster is so flawed and untalented I dont see how that makes much of a difference. Kreider and Trouba are moveable this summer. Use the assets to upgrade at left defense and center. Buyout Goodrow. Bring up the Hartford guys who play with fire and let them cook. If we take a step back into being a wild card team next year, who cares? I appreciate the contributions Kreider has made to the organization but his existence on the roster isn't a requirement for the team to be good. The current arrangement in unsustainable.

For the rest of this year:
Lavi needs the stones to demote Mika to 3C between Vesey and Cuylle and hope the demotion and different linemates make for solid bottom 6 depth even at the absurd cost. Make Troch the 1C and Chytil the 2C, and hope Chytil actually comes back healthy and ready to play. You can't do anything else with Mika right now, they don't have the depth to bench him and there is no deal anyone is making right now even if Drury wanted to.

Offseason:
Assuming they crap the cot like we expect, try to move as much of the bloat as possible and start fresh. I doubt they can dump Mika, Trouba and Goodrow, but even 2 of them would be something. There's no way you can come back next season ho-hum without a massive shake-up.
They can't get rid of Mika. With the full NMC, you can't even say "take this or you're going to Hartford."

The sad thing is, there's some indication that Mika is wearing on this coach a bit. He immediately took Mika out of the matchup role Gallant had him in. He plays less than Trocheck.

Even more sad, they could move Trouba. Like, that one is very easy to get out of if they really wanted to. However, him playing more than Fox this year (still makes me wanna lie down in front of a train) gives no indication that that's even on the radar.

They probably f***ed themselves for the foreseeable. They made huge Panarin-like commitments to UFA's who aren't Panarin and just aren't very good.

There isn't a path forward.

They have to build the roster around Zibanejad and his blood oath contract, or just say f*** it and rebuild entirely.

If you're getting rid of Kreider, do the latter.

Getting down 3-1 to Pittsburgh vibes in here.

And the team banded together because a player lost their mother.

This merry band of jackasses? He had a kid, which explains why HE ABSOLUTELY SUCKS!
And I wouldn't be surprised if Trouba gave himself a concussion from constantly banging into an art canvas.

Hopefully for his next pièce de résistance, he slams his ass onto the paint and then hurls himself out an open window.

I'm intrigued by the Hartford guys who play with a little fire but a little fire isn't fixing the roster.

They have no centers coming up at all and no defenseman in the pipeline I'm excited about. Those are the positions of need.

The team needs draft capital and patience.

The more I think about it, the more I think they should just rebuild. I'm interested in keeping Fox so just pretend he's injured for a couple of years. Other teams have done it.

Zibanejad helps the tank at this point.

That's why if you also deal Shesterkin for a haul, Kreider for a haul, Trouba for a first, and pawn off Goodrow... you can go to Zibanejad and be like, why do you want to stay? Just help us work out a trade. We're retooling. Otherwise you're playing the third line behind Trocheck and Chytil next year.

Panarin is a tricky one. Gonna be hard for anyone to absorb his cap hit, most of all. And next I feel like he's genuinely likeable. And he's a unicorn and might be good till he's 40 like Marty St Louis.

Lavy wont make it past this year when this team is dying in front of him with no guts and then he continues to have a guy like Brodzinski on PP2, or on this team at all. Then goes a step further and puts Trouba on PP2. He also refuses to make changes to PP1 or splitting up Zib and Kreider at 5v5. When is he going to start coaching?
All structure is gone.

The Zibanejad line is so brutal the team needs to go into a line blender to force them back to playing structured hockey.

Kaapo is going to score 10 points this year in the top 6. Let that sink in. Brodzinski would outscore him.

Also, here's a thought that's not roster building for two seconds.

I don't like Kaapo Kakko. I really don't like Nick Bonino. I destroyed Braden Schneider for two years. I still hate Cody McLeod. I make fun of Tanner Glass to this day. I absolutely treated Dan Girardi like horseshit for like five years.

If you can find me bringing up the personal lives of any of these guys, I'll send you money.

It's gross, it's exhausting, and being a fan doesn't give you that right. It's none of your business.

Bonino is so bad he makes Pitlick look good

And I'm saying you don't have to do that. Kreider is going to be 33 before the season ends. You can get younger and change the core without going for a full rebuild. And the Rangers aren't going full rebuild either way.

The crazy thing is, Lavi was supposed to bring structure.

I can't give up on Kakko yet. Yeah he's not elite, but 40 points at age 21 tells me there is something there to salvage and we need top 6 talent still. Even if he tops out at a 50 point defensive plus player.

Yeah, there is analytic history establishing he's a negative offensive presence, but I just can't believe that can't be fixed. So was Lafreniere and look at him now. Decent.... respectable even. Even if never 1OA elite.

If they post about it on social media, it's fair game.

No it isn't. It's not hockey. You're a hockey fan. Talking about people's lives away from hockey is just mean-spirited.

You post on a message board. Your interests are stupid and pointless too.

People literally poke fun at Zibanejad having a kid. He's a real human being with an actual real child and we're going to use that as ammo over a hockey game?

The kid thing is actually a legitimate excuse for him and Trouba. As it was for Igor last year. But if your play on the ice sucks and you're making 8 million bucks a year, Im well within my rights to criticize them for off-ice pursuits (music, art and podcasting lol) that will still be there when they retire comfortably in their late 30s.

All the "structure" in the world won't fix a talent gap, and that's been problem #1. They rebuilt this team and had miss after miss after miss in the draft. Laf has found some juice this season, but the rest of the picks, not good.

Edit: I don't even buy Laf long term, feel like this is fluke. Chytil, always injured and had a down year when healthy last season. We need younger talent, shed some of the old underperforms, and reload. Not going to fix this by just playing musical chairs at head coach.

"Well within your rights" is one thing but it doesn't make it any less sad and gross.

Your tendency to take the sport personally is why you continually fail to assess the roster outside of emotion and emotional responses.

And I care about it a great deal, obviously, but I don't treat the Rangers like bad people or inadequate men because they don't win at hockey. It's high school jock behavior except the nerds are making fun of the jocks.
