I'm not a fan of this move but If it gets us to the playoffs it's good.

To me this move signals that the rebuild is done and this teams moving towards winning... So that's what I will base it on.

If the Sens miss the playoffs then this move was a bust

What about 2nd round pick? I didn't see him in the lineup last year. Is 2nd round pick going to make the Rangers lineup next year? To be honest, I don't even know which position he plays.

I think most of us are pretty ambivalent about it and I know personally, I'm coming around to seeing the real positives after the initial 'wtf' reaction..

Same

When I saw we gave up a 2nd I was pretty

But now, I'm elated. Our top 6, as long as we retain Hoffman, is going to be great.

I mean, a Brassard type player seems to me like a better fit.

Boucher spoke about being big on balancing the "handedness"; that probably plays into it.

We didn't have a playmaker on the 2nd line. Brassard should in theory work better with Ryan than Zibanejad did.

Brassard is a better defensive player, which as a vet, he should be.

I like a lot about the move. I suspect the 2nd was as high as it was because of the bonus being paid out.

All that said, I feel like this isn't enough to put us into win now mode, so I'm not sure I like giving up so much in futures for the present.

It puts us in the race... last year we were not even close.

Zibby could end up being the better player... But brassard will be our top line c, imo. He will improve our PP and while everyone is saying brassard will look great with Ryan, I really think he could Center a top line of Hoffman and Stone. We gave up a lot but we got a really, really good player who fits our needs to a T

I actually met Brassard at the Heart and Crown in the Market a few years back, he was with Methot and a non-hockey player friend.
Recognized Methot right away, me and my buddies had shots and a pic with him. Didn't recognize Brassard, until their friend introduced.
Shocked at the trade, and sad to be losing Zibby, but I can just imagine how thrilled Methot is with Brassard coming here.

Karlsson's happiness trumps Methots

the 2nd round pick might make you happy in a future era of the Sens, but it was the cost of doing our kind of business so can't hate that.

Also a great way to transition into White/Brown.

This is a decent longterm move in terms of establishing a plan that incorporates our recent draft picks who are both looking terrific (less so for Brown but we know we are very high on him).

Okay, you got me. Seeing as the Rangers are likely keeping some salary, the 2nd makes sense now.

I also seem to remember people here LOSING THEIR **** when we added a 2nd round pick to make the Rundblad for Turris trade happen. Sometimes you need to add a pick to make things happen. Picks are just picks. It's just a roll of the dice. They mean nothing until a player makes the NHL. Is that pick likely going to be better than Brassard? Very very unlikely.

I like this trade. I never felt like Zib did anything unless he happened to score. I could be wrong, but evey time he touched the puck I got excited, but then nothing happened. I think his style of play is a mirage of his actual ability. Not saying he's not a good player, but I rather have 3 years of Brassard playing like Turris and having a chance to do some damage and teach work ethic to the kids, and then roll the dice on White / Brown.

Also, I think we should only draft players with colours for names from now on

Zibby doesn't have that extra gear to his game...he's likeable but it seems like he will always underachieve. I like the swap of players...age difference is sketchy...and the gap in the picks is a bit much imo.

A little culture change could be best for the team though.

Actually, I believe Brassards salary this year is 3m (assuming he was paid his bonus before the trade - a pretty safe assumption, I believe).

you could be right there. On capfriendly they had 2 m bonus and 5 m salary
this sight http://www.spotrac.com/nhl/new-york-rangers/derick-brassard/ has
2 m bonus and 3 m salary.

Overall it makes sense total salary + bonuses over 5 years = 25 mil = 5AAV (cap hit)
so yes you are right 3 mil salary ... even better:)

Zibanejad is a guy I've always wanted more from. Lots of tools but you felt like he could do better and be more consistent. Still lots of potential, let's see if he ever harnesses it.

Brassard is being brought in to contribute now and help the power play, which is in dire need of a change.

If Zibanejad keeps playing the way he has, this is a good trade for Ottawa. If he becomes the player we thought he could be, it's a loss for the Sens.

Well the 2nd round pick is for 2018, not next year.

So if we suck next year it's easier to swallow.

I'm slowly coming around to this deal. What makes it easier for me is our prospect depth at Center.

The only way this move ends up making any sense is if Dorion becomes very active the rest of the off season and adds some big name players. Moving Zibanejad for Brassard seems more like a win now move and if that is the case then Dorion needs to do a lot more to make this team a serious cup contender. Adding a bunch of AHL players, a 35 year old Chris Kelly and switching Brassard for Zibanejad is not enough for this team to be a cup threat.

If Dorion doesn't do anything else this offseason then this move won't make much sense.

Also this was a overpayment. The gap between Zibanejad and Brassard is not a 2nd round pick.

I think this pretty much sums everything up.

We traded a 23 year old player that i really think is going to break out next season for a soon to be 29 year old.

I just don't know what to think of this trade. Guess the Sens really were down on Zibby.
