Well the 2nd round pick is for 2018, not next year.

So if we suck next year it's easier to swallow.

I'm slowly coming around to this deal. What makes it easier for me is our prospect depth at Center.

Only problem is we dont have our 2nd next year either, Leafs have it.

By mid-season Ottawa fans will be loving this deal. Brass comes to play every game and he is a player that makes his line mates better.

Pretty ****** move to announce a player is staying in Ottawa for the off season to train, then turn around and trade that player in the same offseason.

Was/am a huge Zibby fan, but this is a good deal. Fair. This deal will improve our second line a great deal imo - not just because we upgrade the C a bit, but Brassard will (imo) provide a boost to Ryan and whomever the other winger is. Something Zibby struggled at early in his career. The salary and handedness is a bonus.

Brassard is a great player, we will love him. Reminds me of Turris actually. We are a better team now with the potential to lose a better player but not a guarantee either. Looking forward to seeing how DB enjoys playing with EK. We saw how amazing it could be when a playmaking C meshes with Karlsson - he and Spezza were magic at times. I think Brassard has a huge hockey IQ and will thrive on a roster with Stone and Karlsson.

I have to say, if this move really was for budget reasons, then i have no faith in us being able to re-sign Stone, Karlsson or even Turris.

I hope to god this move wasn't becasue of the budget or this team is more ****ed than we thought.

This move likely has to do with making sure we can sign these guys....

If both player follow their career progression, this is not a bad deal. The 2nd we gave up may sting but it's two years away. The big thing people like about zib is his "potential" and I don't see it from him consistently and I don't know if it will ever come. People rave about his shots and size, yet he fans on a lot and doesn't play physical at all. Combined with his passive play and average skating and hockey sense, I think the management sees a way out to get a better player, albeit older, to make us competitive right now.

The only way this move ends up making any sense is if Dorion becomes very active the rest of the off season and adds some big name players. Moving Zibanejad for Brassard seems more like a win now move and if that is the case then Dorion needs to do a lot more to make this team a serious cup contender. Adding a bunch of AHL players, a 35 year old Chris Kelly and switching Brassard for Zibanejad is not enough for this team to be a cup threat.

If Dorion doesn't do anything else this offseason then this move won't make much sense.

Also this was a overpayment. The gap between Zibanejad and Brassard is not a 2nd round pick.

Kelly is not a Ahl player.

Look, I won't argue that Brassard isn't a better centre than Zib because I always felt Zib should be on the RW. Our second line will be better and having a left handed centre should help Ryan a lot but my question is was Zib the right price to pay?

Those who say we haven't had much success with 2nd rounders are probably the same one's who argue we have the best amateur scouts in the business. You can't have it both ways 2nd rounders should be safer picks at least as 3rd and 4th line guys with even a potential top line hidden gem. It's later that you usually gamble more so what does that tell us about our amateur scouts. Who was in charge of those all along ....wasn't it our new GM....Pierre Dorion!!! Seems like not doing well with 2nd rounders should reflect on them rather than the pick itself. It appears that our scouts do better when they use the old dart board in the later rounds to make their selections so maybe the 7th is better than a second. :sarcasm:

The budget is not as bad as some think.

Zbad always left me wanting more. I like him, but I don't HATE this. Nothing against ZBad at all, wish him the best.

Zibby was one of my favs and it seemed like Dorion liked him too. I think though that he was definitely not living up to his potential. Too lackadaisical.

This trade doesn't save us money.

In 2016/17 Brassard and Zibanejad have almost identical salaries. Zibanejad is an RFA next season, but if we re-signed him to a Kadri-type contract - around 4M for 4+ years, with the contract back-loaded, the salaries would probably be about the same for the next 3 seasons (until Brassard is a UFA). Unless we don't plan on re-signing Brassard in 3 years time, this deal doesn't save us any significant amount of money, now or in the future.

Brassard only out produced Zibanejad by 7Pts last season... Zibanejad is five years younger.

All other things being equal, it's preferable to have a 29 year old player who shows up in shape and plays hard 100% of the time. Don't know about Zin, but Brass makes his line mates better.

That was up to Zib he wanted to stay and train this was not the team telling him to.
