This deal is a win win. Mika gets his bag, we get the AAV to a more manageable number.

Last couple years of the deal could be ugly but it's not worth even complaining about now. Cap will rise then and with all the cap shenanigans that GMs pull these days it's not worth worrying about what we're gonna do 8 years from now.

Obviously we'd all prefer a 5 or 6 year deal but that was never going to happen. This deal is very fair.

We have our core for this contending window locked in.

Yeah, Trouba should've been $6-6.5M AAV. But he was a big, physical, minute eating RHD who scored like 50 points in a season. GM's will overpay for that shit unfortunately.
Trouba only got the AAV he did because it was signed with the understanding that the cap would be going up every season and also that he'd have more of an offensive role here. Trouba was a PP1 guy in Winnipeg and scored well there. Remember we traded for Trouba before we traded for Fox let alone knew what Fox was going to be.

Congrats to DJ Zbad

This is a dub. HUGE dub. I could not be happier. Massive respect to him because that’s a big discount to me. I expected 10 million at least. Idc about the last 2 years. We are ready to compete now. And we need elite players. And elite players tend to still play well in their later years. THANK YOU MIKA

Great news. That is the type of contract we need to help build this team into a perennial contender. Z is a great player and this is a great contract.

The problem is we signed him based off of his 50pts season. He was paid as the #1 RHD and with the expectation of being on PP1. Fox and ADA quickly changed that.

We were catfished. or JD and Gorton were...

Trouba is all but gone in 3 years time.

The funny thing is I don’t believe that was the Rangers expectation. I think that was the fan expectation, or more specifically a decent percentage of the fans on here. I harken back to examples of fans expecting a Lexus when they’re really getting a Camry.

I think the Rangers more or less knew exactly what they were getting, and have more or less received what they expected.

If anything, the question internally was whether they actually had a top notch first pair RD in the system or whether they were looking at several options that were more ideally second pair guys or 1B types.

Fox emerging at the level he did was a pleasant surprise for the Rangers, but it existed somewhat independently of expectations for Trouba.

Trouba’s salary is about on par with what he brings and barring a complete collapse will continue to be nestled right in the range as other contracts come online. And his role, beyond powerplay time that is beyond his control, was pretty evident at the end of last season.

Let me very publicly state I’m thrilled with this. The next time I worry about what a hockey player makes 7 years from now will be the first time. We needed Mika for this window and we got him with a great 8.5 mil hit. Now just name him captain

good, for seven years you won’t complain once about the cap lol.

Richards signed for 7 years right? 7 years is such a long time. It seems like Richards was here for awhile but actually only played 3 seasons with us.

When is the last time the Rangers signed a player to a big contract and they saw it through all the way to the final year?

Hank. Unless you are talking about UFA...then that's...never? lol

Even he was BO for the final year. Unless you are talking about his first contract coming off his entry as a RFA in 2008, but that contract doesn't compare to Richards, Redden, Drury, Gomez, Gaborik, Staal, Girardi, Shattenkirk, Brassard, Stepan who were all out of NY long before they could finish their UFA years.

Of all people it is Brendan Smith who played through his whole contract without being BO or traded and was able to walk to UFA as an expired contract.

here are my comments
I wish it underscored how @StaalsXpensiveCTDigs needs to be chided for consistently, I daresay knowingly, misquotes me selectively, out of context.

Yes, I only wanted Zib at 3-4 yrs, w/no NMC and ok or less tnc. For that privilege, I was willing to overpay him at 10.5 per. It would be short term stress but avoid long term crush and cover if Zib's production falls off a cliff then, either due to injury or age + wear + tear.
This is contrary to the inferred representation some are making that I simply wanted Zib to do less term without getting counterbalance reward for doing so.
So for those who deserve it --- and while I am specifically not naming names, you know who you are --- for being a horse's butt, bite me.
Thats a ton of words to say you were wrong and your scenario had zero chance of happening.

If Fil takes over 2C, our Roster is pretty set for the long haul. That feels kind of relieving actually.
If he plays like he played last night we will be in good shape. That being said Strome has been great since he has been on the Rangers, he brings a lot to the table. He fits in perfectly behind Z. I would be interested to see what kind of deal they could come up with to keep him here long term.

I disagree on value. He's overpaid. It doesn't mean he doesn't have value.

He's not an offensive force and comparing salaries, he's not better than McDonagh or someone like Pelech. (that's where I think his value lies, $5.8M-$6.8M ) Trouba filled a major need, we just drastically overpaid for it.

It's even worse if you what you say is true and the org didn't view his as a #1RD/PP/PMD.

I'll never forget the game that Zib scored 5 goals against Ottawa and their fans were saying on their own board "Wow... imagine if we had a player like Zibanejad........."
He scored 5 goals against the Capitals, not Ottawa.

I think this is a fair assessment. He's overpaid by 1 to 1.5 million.

I'm hoping it happens with the next one.
