Chris Drury out on the streets wearing a sandwich board telling people to sign up to DraftKings.com so the NHL cap will rise by the time VK, KK, AL, FC all need raises. I don't see a perfect timing on all those contracts. Kreider and Trouba are NMC for 3 full years. They won't be tradeable unless they waive until after all our young kids have a new contract. We'll get tons of little bits of relief. We have $7M still but that's not enough just for Fox. George will be kicked to the curb and replaced giving us $1.5M, buyout $1M, Strome, $4.5M mostly eaten up by Mika's raise, $1M cap increase but I don't see how this puzzle comes together. In 2 years, $1M more in cap increase, $3.4M from buyouts all coming off, Reaves $1.75M but all peanuts if we want to extend our kids to long term 6 year+ deals instead of bridges left right and center. It'll be some work just to work out 2 bridge and 2 long term. KK and AL on long term and go medium term on FC who is already on a bridge and bridge VK?

If we're being realistic about it, this is about as good as we could've hoped for. If you want a number one center, you have to pay for it.
Exactly.

It’s a fine deal and the AAV is lower than he would’ve gotten on the open market.

We’re going for it in the next five years or so (Panarin’s deal term left) so let’s get going, the time is now.

Mmmm so bridge everyone except Kakko. Lafreniere's point production will be milder compared to Kakko I think saving him as a safe option to bridge without blowing up in our face. VK, FC, AL, BS, ZJ, KAM, NL will have to wait until the cap rises to $90M+ in 3+ years and we can trade Kreider and Trouba in 3 years on limited NTC to get paid.

Thats a ton of words to say you were wrong and your scenario had zero chance of happening.

but the fact or the matter is I am not wrong.
I did not say they would wind up with him at that price point and term.
I said they should make a serious effort to offer him the vibrant alternative I suggested.
Apparently, whether offered or not or rejected or not, the player chose to take less sure money than gamble on being overpaid but what is his condition age 33, 34.
That majority of this board is properly concerned this could come back and bite us in the ass in 4-5 yrs is proof I was correct to say at least try it my way.
No one was saying let him walk Tavares style for nothing.
If his demands were beyond this, trading him would have had to be considered.

You are still on the hook for misrepresenting my position.
Cherry pick all you want, end of the day you can run but you cannot hide.

I am really worried and agree with Larry Brooks. We end up with mediocre instead aiming for Jack Eichel who is 24 years old.
He is not Haaland kind of player in soccer - no NHL player will be close to his salary next summer, but that is not my point. He is not a world star player so I felt the contract length is too much only based on 1 main reason his injury history.

@Ori Eichel is not what he once was.
He is currently an unacceptable risk, incl compared to Zib, who we can rely on short term [long term is the gamble].
So be with peace of mind here.

nice to hear and hope all is well w/you.

I'm happy to see the idea of "worry about the back end of the deal at the back end of the deal" is an approach gaining steam with a lot of people. I think that's the way to go, and it's the right approach in a league with a cap that many teams are constantly up against. You gotta keep your guys when you can, and then the good teams will find a way to deal with the "bad years" when they actually come up.

Not that I think the Staal trade was some masterstroke in dealing, but it was at least a step in the right direction. It showed the team was starting to understand that there are ways, other than buyouts, to get rid of undesirable contracts.
Nah fam. The right way is to never sign anyone over the age of 25 unless you can get them on a 4 year deal. Just keep drafting in the top 10 and eventually you’re going to be a dynasty.

So much this. Holy hell. If I could give 90% of our posters one gift it would be patience and perspective. The sky is always falling here. Yesterday we were putrid, this team stinks, never prepared, what is Gallant doing, etc. and then all of a sudden it’s the best game of the preseason, man what a team, never would have come together and pushed back like this under Quinn, we’re gonna be good this year! If we had some patience we could have skipped all the negative hyperbole from the first 15 minutes. Amazing, right?
I have so many posters here on ignore and it gets added to quite often

you buying more gifts?

I haven't seen anyone complain about it. 8 years is long but the AAV is the trade off

As for the results, Trouba ranked somewhere in the 80th to 85th percentile for xGAR and WAR last season. As for the “eye test” of what happens without him, the less we say about his injury at the end of the season the better.

Even more context, our RD before Trouba was DeAngelo, Pionk. McQuaid, and Shattenkirk.

It's now Trouba, Fox, Lundkvist, and then all the promising prospects we have.

Advanced stats alone won't even tell the whole story. 52% Defensive Zone starts with a 48% Corsi and okay to slightly low puck luck. 93% 2021 WAR.

We’re gonna have more bridges than Madison County.

More bridges than Lloyd Bridges.

hot take. Ekblad is not worth his contract either.

If you want to keep it real simple. Every big deal needs an accompanying player on ELC or minimum. I think we’re tight cap wise right now but with a good pipeline we should be able to manage. The thing to do now is to manage assets well and keeping the pipeline full.

I'm not the biggest Mika fan but what did people expect him to get or what his worth is? 7 millionx7-8? LOL.
It really doesn't matter anymore because anything we give to players is perceived as overpayment. We can give Fox 8X8 and people will say its way too much money.

Lots of people I think are still lagging behind on the fact that salaries for long term deals have increased by 25%-33% over the last 3 years. Duchene at $8M, Seguin at $9.85M, Backstrom at $9.2M. The days of 6X6 for top 6 UFAs Fs are gone
